Massive Iceberg Flips Near Boat in Argentina: VIDEO

Iceberg

Here's the latest viral iceberg video, in which ecotourists appear remarkably calm while a massive piece of ice swings from under the ocean with potentially boat-eliminating force in Argentina's Los Glaciares National Park. Writes the videographer:

This Iceberg was "calved" by Argentina's Uppsala glacier. While we were passing by it with a catamaran, the huge berg lost a part of itself (look at the right side sinking) and then flipped over with a huge roar. In the process of melting this happens all the time, but it is seldom that it is captured on video WHEN it happens...

Argentina: The Trans-Friendliest Place On Earth

Casa-rosadaLast Wednesday, the Argentinian senate voted 55-0 in favor of a law which allows individuals to change their legal gender simply because they want to. Again, that's 55-0 for. No dissent. This makes Argentina the most trans-friendly country in the world.

From the AP:

In the United States and Europe, transgender people must submit to physical and mental health exams and get past a series of other hurdles before getting sex-change treatments.

Argentina's law ... is the first to give citizens the right to change their legal gender without first changing their bodies, said Justus Eisfeld, co-director of Global Action for Trans Equality in New York.

"The fact that there are no medical requirements at all — no surgery, no hormone treatment and no diagnosis — is a real game changer and completely unique in the world. It is light years ahead of the vast majority of countries, including the U.S., and significantly ahead of even the most advanced countries," said Eisfeld, who researched the laws of the 47 countries for the Council of Europe's human rights commission.

Argentina legalized same-sex marriage two years ago, and predictably the still-large Catholic Church in Argentina is unhappy with the country's liberal drift. From the AP:

"The Argentine lawmakers are introducing profound changes in society that don't respond to any social demand and without taking into account the real consequences," Nicolas Lafferriere, who directs the church-sponsored Center for Bioethics, Personhood and Family, complained Thursday in "Religious Values," an online publication sponsored by the archbishop of Buenos Aires.

We have found ourselves faced with the most permissive law in the world in this area. Now, to change all the civil registries you don't need any more justification than a personal desire, based on someone's self-perception. It won't be easy to predict the consequences." Lafferriere warned.

But:

... fewer and fewer Argentines regularly attend Mass, and priests and bishops don't have the same power of the pulpit anymore ... The Catholic hierarchy also has been inexorably linked with the military junta that killed as many as 30,000 people during the dictatorship. Both enforced conservative social values at the time.

... which has had a predictably withering effect on the Church's political power. That number again: 55-0.

Argentina Lawmakers Approve Landmark Gender Identity Bill

ArgentinaIDLGBT advocates here in the States aren't the only ones with something worth celebrating.

The AP reports that Argentina's Senate yesterday approved 55-0 a measure that will allow transgender people to change the gender on their ID and receive health care for potential sex change operations.

Any adult will now be able to officially change his or her gender, image and birth name without having to get approval from doctors or judges — and without having to undergo physical changes beforehand, as many U.S. jurisdictions require.

When Argentines want to change their bodies, health care companies will have to provide them with surgery or hormone therapy on demand. Such treatments will be included in the "Obligatory Medical Plan," which means both private and public providers will not be able to charge extra for the services.

"This law is going to enable many of us to have light, to come out of the darkness, to appear," said Sen. Osvaldo Lopez of Tierra del Fuego, the only openly gay national lawmaker in Argentina.

The bill will now head to President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner for the final signature.

Morrissey and His Band 'Hate William and Kate'

Morrissey

Morrissey and his bandmates staged a sartorial protest of Britain's continued ownership of the Falkland Islands at a concert in Argentina, according to the Hollywood Reporter:

"The [British] government, the governments, never listen to the people, to their pain," he told the audience, blaming the government, not the people, for the political difficulty.

Morrissey initially commented on the dispute, which has been enflamed by Prince William's Royal Air Force assignment to the islands, on Friday, when he told another audience in Argentina that “You know of course the Malvinas Islands, everybody knows they belong to Argentina so please do not blame the British people, we know the islands belong to you." The Malvinas Islands are the Spanish name for the Falklands.

Massive Glacier Collapse Caught on Film in Argentina: VIDEO

Peritomoreno

Tourists at The Perito Moreno Glacier in Los Glaciares National Park, in southern Argentina, began gathering late last week to watch the spectacular collapse a massive glacier near the city of El Calafate in the Patagonian province of Santa Cruz, southern Argentina.

MSNBC reports:

As Perito Moreno moves forward, it cuts off a river feeding the lake. Water builds up pressure and slowly undermines the ice, forming a tunnel until ice comes tumbling down. The phenomenon repeats itself at irregular intervals, with the last major ice falls occurring in 2008. The glacier collapsed on March 4, 2012, after several large chunks broke off.

This time, a major portion of the collapse was caught on film.
