Los Angeles Dodgers Release 'It Gets Better' Video

The Los Angeles Dodgers are the latest MLB franchise to reach out to bullied teens with a video for the "It Gets Better" project.

The Dodgers' contribution features several Dodger players and coaches including Don Mattingly, James Loney, Matt Guerrier, Jamey Carroll, A.J. Ellis, Rod Barajas and Hiroki Kuroda.

"The Dodgers have been outspoken advocates for equality and against all societal prejudices dating back to the days of Jackie Robinson," said Dodgers Senior Vice President, Public Affairs Howard Sunkin. "Our club wholeheartedly supports an end to bullying and violence against LGBT youth. There is zero tolerance for violence of any kind for any reason in our community."

Gay rights leaders from Barcelona claim unwarranted treatment at Tel Aviv airport: "David Marti, the general manager for gay pride events in Barcelona, told Haaretz that airport security had stripped his boyfriend whom he was traveling with. The pair were asked a series of personal questions, which Marti said exceeded reasonable limits. The men's personal items were also thoroughly searched. Marti said the pair was questioned for a long time, with their security check ending just minutes before their plane took off."

On Sunday morning, March 20, Mayor Jordi Hereu of Barcelona dedicated a granite triangle framed in pink in the city's central Ciutadella Park. The location was a compromise after the Roman Catholic church raised a ruckus over the proposed installation of the memorial in the immediate vicinity of Antoní Gaudi's famed Basilica of the Sagrada Familia, which is also the city's number one tourist attraction.  

In a dignified ceremony under sunny skies in front of hundreds of supporters, the mayor spoke of the history of Barcelona as a haven for persecuted groups and individuals, and for the city's respect for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered people.

Only Amsterdam has a similar such visible statement, literally carved in stone, among gay-friendly European cities.

The triangular slab slants slightly upward toward the observer, with an inscription in Catalan that reads, "In memory of the gays, lesbians and transexual persons who have suffered persecution and repression throughout history, Barcelona 2011."

After the ceremony, which featured show tunes in several languages from the local gay men's chorus, (all dressed in black except for their boas, in one ABBA number), local GLBT groups left bunches of flowers around the monument, whose resemblance to a tombstone was hardly coincidental.

Correction:  The author inadvertently overlooked the many European monuments to the queer victims of the holocaust in Europe in Berlin, Frankfurt, the Hague, and in several other European cities, as well as the sites of concentration camps.  Thanks to all of the sharp readers who pointed them out!

Barcelona to Erect Monument to LGBT People, May be Located Next to Famous Gaudi 'Sagrada Familia' Basilica

In two months, Barcelona will unveil a monument to LGBT people persecuted throughout history, it announced on Thursday, and said it is considering a location next to one of the city's most iconic holy sites — Antonio Gaudi's Sagrada Familia Basilica.

AFP reports:

Pope Benedict XVI consecrated the city's emblematic Antonio Gaudi-designed church last month as hundreds of gays and lesbians staged a mass "kiss-in" to protest the Roman Catholic Church's stance on homosexuality.

A statement from the city hall Thursday said the monument would be unveiled in February.

It said the inscription will read "In memory of the gays, lesbians and transsexual people who have suffered persecution and repression throughout history. Barcelona 2011."

Such a tribute has been demanded for some years by Spain's LGTB gay rights association, the statement said.
