Watch: Fantastic Follow-Up on Gay Belgian Couple Reunited with Son Kept from Them for Years in the Ukraine

Samuel

Here's a really good update on a story we were following earlier this year.

Laurent Ghilain and Peter Meurrens, a Belgian couple living in Southern France, had been separated from their son Samuel, whom they had through a surrogate, for two years and three months because the Belgian embassy in Kiev refused to issue Samuel a passport due to restrictive surrogacy laws and anti-gay officials in Belgium. Samuel had been living in a Ukrainian orphanage while they fought for his release.

Laurent and Peter were reunited with Samuel in late February. Samuel has been with them for four weeks at this point.

The dads say that the first few days he was home Samuel would put food in his pockets probably because he was used to not getting food for the rest of the day at the orphanage. He also spontaneously wet himself when a news crew from the Ukraine showed up and he heard their dialect.

Their son has a lot of adjustment to go through but it's apparent he's in great hands with Peter and Laurent.

Video: Gay Belgian Couple Reunite with Son Stranded for Two Years in Ukrainian Orphanage

Reunion_ghilain

Over the weekend I reported on the reunion of Laurent Ghilain and Peter Meurrens with their son.

Ghilain and Meurrens, a Belgian couple living in Southern France, had been separated from Samuel, whom they had through a surrogate, for two years and three months because the Belgian embassy in Kiev refused to issue Samuel a passport due to restrictive surrogacy laws and anti-gay officials in Belgium. Samuel had been living in a Ukrainian orphanage while they fought for his release.

Now, here's a news report with video of Samuel and his parents' reunion with family members.

No translation necessary, really. Tears of joy and relief are universal.

Now, good news: Baby

The long and painful separation now seems about to come to an end. After more than two years of denying Samuel a passport, the Belgian Foreign Ministry issued him one Monday. He should arrive in Brussels within days.

The ministry's decision came after a Belgian court finally issued a ruling in the couple's favor last week, saying bureaucrats had committed numerous errors.

***

(Ghilain and Meurrens) say the Belgian official who worked hardest to prevent the baby from being allowed into the country implied in court that, because they were gay, they could not be good parents.

While victory appears to be at hand, Ghilain and Meurrens have been told so many times their problems were nearly solved that it frightens them to have hope.

Samuel is scheduled to arrive in Brussels in a few days.

There's much more to the fascinating and heartbreaking story. Watch the moving report, AFTER THE JUMP...

Watch: Lady Gaga Receives Dildo on Stage, Eats Barbie Doll

Gaga1

Lady Gaga's Monster Ball is in Europe right now. While in Antwerp, she received a sex toy on stage, and after briefly wearing it as a crown, hurled it back to the audience. In Arnhem, The Netherlands, she did her best Ozzy Osbourne and tried to bite off the head of a Barbie doll.

Belgian Archbishop: Homosexuality Like Anorexia

Leonard

Radio Netherlands reports on some remarks by the new Archbishop of Belgium Andre-Joseph Leonard. He'll probably get a gold star from Papa Ratzi for this:

"'Homosexuality is not the same as normal sex in the same way that anorexia is not a normal appetite,' says the new Archbishop of Belgium. Archbishop Léonard's comments were made in an interview with a Belgian television station. He added that he would 'never call anorexia patients abnormal.' A few years ago, when he was serving as Bishop of Namen, he caused a storm of controversy when he said that homosexuality was abnormal. Last week Pope Benedict XVI named him as the successor to Archbishop Daniels. Archbishop Léonard is also a well-known critic of abortion and stem cell research."
