Bette Midler Stumps for Obama at Gay Nightclub in Vegas
Bette Midler stumped for Obama at Las Vegas' gay nightclub Krave on Monday night:
"Midler perched on a stool at the front of the club's stage, facing a packed dance floor. Wearing a leopard-print mini-dress and matching gloves, she proceeded to tell a few hundred of her closest friends what was on Miss M's mind. 'I am so distressed about this election, oh my God,' she said confessionally. 'I haven't left my house in days. I watch the news channels incessantly. All the news stories are about the election; all the commercials are for Viagra and Cialis. Election, erection, election, erection -- either way we're getting screwed!' Midler said she has sung for candidates and raised money for candidates, but she's speaking out more than ever before in this election because Obama has moved her more than any candidate before him. 'I come from an extremely poor family,' said Midler, whose father was a house painter. 'I know I look divine now, but I was not always divine.' Her humble background, she said, taught her to value hard work. 'I had big dreams,' she said. 'You know me. You've watched me for 40 frickin' years. Every single dream I had my entire life came true. Barack Obama says only in America could his story happen, and I totally understand because only in America could my story happen.'"

Wesley Clark stands by his dressing down of John McCain.

The U.S. doesn’t find Boy George appealing—so his first tour in ages is officially off. I guess America doesn’t know a good drag queen when we see one.

Huntington Beach police officer Adam Bereki has settled his suit against the city, which alleged he endured repeated gay harassment by his co-workers. He'll get $150,000 upfront and $4,000 a month in disability for life. Even though the city admits no wrongdoing and none of the accused officers have been penalized, spokesman Lt. Dave Bunetta says, "Anyone being harassed or victimized will not be tolerated by the police department." I wonder if he realizes what he's saying was literally true in this case?
Check out this warm backstage remembrance of Katharine Hepburn (who would be 101 this year) by Tim Ranney, who interned on her play The West Side Waltz in 1981. Her advice: "Obey all the rules, and miss all the fun."

Virginia Beach house owned by gay pornstar killers Harlow Cuadra and Joseph Kerekes is up for sale: "The pair lived lavishly at the house. Police seized $26,000 cash as well as two large plasma TVs (one 55 inches, one 50 inches); four cars (three of which were worth about $100,000 each); five computer monitors; stereo and video equipment; and several pieces of gold and diamond jewelry."

DIVA: Australia celebrates drag with massive awards show.

Director William Friedkin to hold Q&A session at special showing of Al Pacino's Cruising at the Castro Theater this weekend: "It was the first high-profile bomb for star Al Pacino, and you have to dig deep in the bargain bin to find a 1980s William Friedkin movie that was more reviled. Worse yet, it was attacked by many in the gay community, who felt that the film's gay serial killer and over-the-top portrayal of queer culture enforced homophobic stereotypes."

Apparently there have been rumors going around that T.R. Knight has only signed on for part of the season at Grey's Anatomy. Not true, says E's Kristin dos Santos: "While the show's official rep at ABC says she never comments on the details of actors' contracts, an inside source close to the show tells me this is most definitely not true. I'm told T.R. has signed on for all episodes of the upcoming fourth season and that he never would have been given his recent pay hike had he only signed on for half of the episodes."

News: Norman Korpi, Seattle Pride, Britney Comeback, Don Imus
Deposed radio host Don Imus says he's suing CBS for the $40 million remaining in his contract: " Imus has hired one of the nation's premiere First Amendment attorneys, and the two sides are gearing up for a legal showdown that could turn on how language in his contract that encouraged the radio host to be irreverent and engage in character attacks is interpreted, according to one person who has read the contract. The language, according to this source, was part of a five-year contract that went into effect in 2006 and that paid Imus close to $10 million a year. It stipulates that Imus be given a warning before being fired for doing what he made a career out of - making off-color jokes."

And it's got the biggest (video wall) in the world, and you say, 'What the heck am I going to put on that? My baby pictures?"

Seattle's The Stranger takes a look at the mess that is Seattle Gay Pride: "The annual paroxysms of doubt about whether the event will even happen at all. The ensuing existential crises within the gay community "leadership." The announcement, this year, of a bankruptcy filing by parade organizers—and then the subsequent announcement, just hours later, that the bankruptcy filing would not be happening. And of course, the all-out war between gay factions over the parade's location, with the supporters of a downtown parade in one camp and the supporters of a Capitol Hill parade in the other. Angry words and recriminations fly back and forth between them, in private and in public. It's enough to make a homo want to stay home on parade day."
