Bill Donohue: Gays Can Still Get Hamburgers at Applebee's So How are They Being Persecuted? — VIDEO

Donohue

Catholic League President and general blowhard Bill Donohue faced off against Chris Cuomo this morning about Arizona's anti-gay bill and measures like it that would discriminate against gays based on religious beliefs.

Spat Donohue:

“Where are the examples of gays being discriminated against? If they’re being discriminated against, how come they make more money than straight people on average?...Is somebody being denied at Applebee’s getting a hamburger? Where are these examples of gay people being persecuted?”

Replies Cuomo:

“That's the exact right question. But it's the reverse! Can you point out a business that was made a substantial burden religiously because of what they had to do vis-a-vis a gay person?”

Cuomo and Donohue then went on to tear into one another about marriage after Donohue said:

"The gold standard is a father and a mother creating a family. That's what was ordained by nature and nature's God. Have you noticed anatomically there's a goodness of fit between a man and a woman?"

Bob Newhart Headlining Anti-LGBT Group's Annual Summit with Rick Santorum, Bill Donohue

Newhart

Legendary TV icon Bob Newhart is set to headline an annual summit for the anti-LGBT Legatus Group, Jeremy Hooper reports for GLAAD.

Hooper notes a bit of the group's anti-gay history:

On November 1, 2012, Legatus magazine, the print publication of the conservative Catholic organization of the same name, listed five "non-negotiables" for voters about to head to the polls. Marriage equality (which the magazine labeled homosexual "marriage," smear quotes and all) was one of the five listed items, with the staff writer instructing Catholics "to avoid voting for candidates who endorse or promote policies that provide for any of these acts and to vote instead for those who promote policies in keeping with moral law." The phrase "intrinsic evil" was used seven times.

Although this organization's insistence that civil marriage equality is one of God's major unacceptables shouldn't come as a huge surprise, considering Legatus pushes the idea that homosexuality itself is a "disorder" from which one must be "cured." I'm not exaggerating when I say that. In a 2011 Legatus piece, Legate John Haas (whose family has close ties to the National Organization for Marriage, by the way) called for our "curing" in the clearest of language.

Also telling are the folks appearing with Newhart:

And get this: Newhart is scheduled to appear alongside such noted anti-LGBT figures as the Catholic League's Bill Donohue and Rick "man on dog" Santorum. Yeah, it's going to be that kind of a night. Why in Larry, Darryl, and my other brother Darryl's name would Mr. Newhart, legendary TV star and one of the most genuinely well-liked people to ever appear before a film camera, sign up for such a gig?!

GLAAD has reached out to Newhart's people "to let them know how, exactly, an appearance at this event will come across to LGBT people and allied voices."

Catholic League's Bill Donohue Wants Bill Maher Axed Because Dan Savage Pointed Out That Priests Rape Children

Savage_maher

Dan Savage's recent appearance on Real Time with Bill Maher was the last straw for Catholic League blowhard Bill Donohue, who sent off a strongly-worded letter to the board of directors of Time Warner.

DonohueWrites Donohue:

Maher commented on gay couples who adopt children, alleging that a Hawaiian bishop said these kids had a greater chance of committing suicide. Here is how Savage responded: “That’s total bulls***. He’s confusing children of gay parents with children who are raped by Catholic priests. Sorry, I am just done being lectured about children and their safety by Catholic-f***ing bishops, priests, cardinals.” Shortly thereafter, Savage again remarked about “kiddie-f***ing Catholic priests.”

We are sending to every member of Time Warner’s board of directors a copy of 54 anti-Catholic statements made by Bill Maher on TV [click here to read the report]. Friday’s show concluded the season. The time has come to close this show once and for all.

Tweets Savage:

"Funny thing about this... ...is that I was raised Catholic. And so was @billmaher. Also, too, we're in the right."

CNN's Chris Cuomo and Catholic Blowhard Bill Donohue Have It Out Over Pope Francis, Gays: VIDEO

Donohue

Chris Cuomo, the host of CNN's New Day, blasted Catholic League President Bill Donohue's views on gays in a discussion about yesterday's Pope Francis interview, CNN reports:

C_cuomoCuomo said, “You have bashed on these issues for years and years. Most infamously, recently, saying that the Church had a homosexual problem, not a pedophile problem. I mean really incendiary, flagrant, divisive stuff…. You’re saying you won’t do that anymore?”

Donohue replied, “Oh no, I will always tell the truth –“

“Well, that wasn’t the truth,” Cuomo countered.

“If 81% of the victims are male and 100% of the victimizers are male, and if 78% of the victims are post-pubescent, the word in the English language is not pedophilia, it’s called homosexuality,” Donohue said.

When Donohue asked Cuomo if he thinks he “made up those figures,” Cuomo replied, “I think you’re parsing them, I think you’re cherry-picking them and I think that the most important part is your motivation. You just heard what the Pope said. Why wouldn’t you try to move past this parsing rhetoric and try to be what your church is supposed to be about?”

Hundreds Of Anti-Gay Activists Pledge To Defy Any Supreme Court Ruling Favoring Marriage Equality

Screen Shot 2013-06-21 at 3.27.02 PM

Over two hundred Christian anti-gay activists and organizations have signed a letter threatening to ignore any upcoming Supreme Court ruling favoring gay marriage. The letter, filled with inflammatory rhetoric, has been signed by a "who's who" of anti-gay bigots including Dr. Ben Carson, Tony Perkins, Bill Donohue, Bishop Harry Jackson, James Dobson, and Oklahoma state Rep. Sally Kern. Additionally, Southern Poverty Law Center designated "hate groups" such as American Family Association and Family Research Council have also signed on.

From the letter:

"As Christian citizens united together, we will not stand by while the destruction of the institution of marriage unfolds in this nation we love. The Sacred Scriptures and unbroken teaching of the Church confirm that marriage is between one man and one woman. We stand together in solidarity to defend marriage and the family and society founded upon them. The effort to redefine marriage threatens the proper mediating role of the Church in society."

The letter goes on to say that "redefining marriage" is the "line we must not draw and one we cannot and will not cross." Considering the fact that Tony Perkins and others have predicted that any ruling in favor of gay marriage will lead to civil war or revolution, one has to wonder just how these anti-gay bigots intend to resists such a ruling.

Anti-Gay Catholic Blowhard Bill Donohue: Marriage is 'Not About Love': VIDEO

Donohue

Catholic League President Bill Donohue talks to Current TV's Jon Fugelsang about marriage equality:

"This idea of two men getting married is the most bizarre idea in human history...Christians have an obligation, particularly Catholics to follow natural law. The whole purpose of marriage is to have a family. It's not about making people happy. It's not about love."

After Donohue cites Leviticus, Fugelsang asks if he follows it: "What do you mean follow Leviticus? Do I sleep with a man? No I don't. I never have. I have no interest in doing so."

Also on the table: Bill Maher and the priest sex abuse scandal.
