140 Religious Leaders Petition For Exemption From Obama’s Pending LGBT Executive Order

IRFA letter on anti-discrimination in the workplace

On June 25 a group of about 140 religious leaders and advocates for religious freedom sent a letter to President Barack Obama to try and secure an exemption for faith-based groups in a pending executive order which aims to protect LGBT government contract workers from discrimination.

Barack obamaOrganized by the Institutional Religious Freedom Alliance, the letter does not endorse the pending order as the best way to curtail work discrimination. It also recommends the religious freedom protections that the Senate accepted in November 2013’s Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) bill, but requests additional protections.

Although the House announced it would not vote on the legislation, the June 25 letter suggests that Obama adopt some of the religious exemption language from the bill.

The letter states that religious organizations that contract with the government to provide such services as overseas relief and development with USAID:

"Often are the best-qualified applicants for federal contracts or subcontracts. It would be counterproductive to bar them from offering their services to the federal government simply because of their legally protected religious convictions; it would be wrong to require them to violate those legally protected convictions in order to be eligible to receive federal contracts. Their exclusion from federal contracting would be diametrically opposed to the Administration's commitment to having 'all hands on deck' in the fight against poverty and other dire social problems."

However, a growing coalition of critics is urging Obama to drop the practice of allowing religious groups to hire and fire based on a person’s faith when they receive federal money, saying Obama is reneging on a promise he made in 2008. Obama, who originally campaigned against the Bush-era discrimination policy, said in 2008:

“If you get a federal grant, you can’t use that grant money to proselytize to the people you help and you can’t discriminate against them — or against the people you hire — on the basis of their religion."

Some of the religious leaders who signed the letter include: Leith Anderson, president of the National Association of Evangelicals; Rev. Samuel Rodriguez, president of the National Christian Hispanic Leadership Conference and Hispanic Evangelical Association; Joel Hunter, senior pastor of Northland-A Church Distributed; Franklin Graham, president and CEO of Samaritan's Purse and The Billy Graham Evangelistic Association; and George Wood, general superintendent of the Assemblies of God.

Additionally, the letter was signed - personally, rather than on behalf of their organizations - by the presidents of numerous Christian colleges, including Colorado Christian University, Houghton College, Biola University, Calvin College, Moody Bible Institute, and Denver Seminary.

Billy Graham’s Son: God Hates 'Cowards' Who Refuse to Speak Out Against Homosexuality: VIDEO

At the Family Research Council’s Watchmen on the Wall conference last week, anti-gay preacher Franklin Graham blasted church leaders who fail to use the pulpit to push a conservative social agenda regarding abortion and homosexuality - calling such pastors “cowards.”

The Christian Post reports:

"God hates cowards. And the cowards that the Lord is referring to are the men and women who know the truth but refuse to speak it."

In his remarks at the dinner session, Graham spoke about the need for churches to speak out against abortion and homosexuality, declaring that "you're not going to shut me up."

"We have a responsibility to speak on the moral issues. Abortion, homosexuality, these are moral issues. This is a free country, you can do what you want to do but I want you to know it's a sin against God. This is a sin," said Graham.

This is also the same conference that Duck Dynasty star Alan Robertson called his father Phil Robertson a "21st century prophet" for comparing homosexuality to bestiality and saying homosexual sinners were going to hell like terrorists, prostitutes, and drunks.

Billy Graham's Son: Gays 'Recruit' Children Through Adoption - VIDEO

Franklin_graham

After praising Russian President Vladimir Putin for his moral treatment of homosexuals as pedophiles, Franklin Graham — the evangelical spawn of anti-gay preacher Billy Graham — doubled-down on his love of Putin, adding that gays don't "adopt" children so much as "recruit" them; a distinction that he never actually explains.

During an interview with Tim Funk of The Charlotte Observer, Graham calls up the right-wing bogeymen of the president's lockstep march with the so-called "gay and lesbian agenda" and religious intolerance of gay people who dare label his "difference of opinion" as bigotry or homophobia.

In one delicious part of the interview, Funk asks Graham why he's opposed to enshrining Islamic Sharia law into the U.S. society when he supports enshrining Christian Biblical law into anti-marriage legislation. Graham, unsurprisingly, doesn't answer, only responding with "Well I believe the Bible from cover to cover. And I believe the Old Testament as well as the New Testament."

Billy Graham's Son Praises Putin's Stance On Gay Issues

Franklin_grahamIn the March 14 issue of Decision Magazine, Franklin Graham — the evangelical spawn of anti-gay preacher Billy Graham — praised Russia's law against homosexual propaganda, stating:

"Putin is right on (gay) issues... he has taken a stand to protect his nation’s children from the damaging effects of any gay and lesbian agenda.

"Isn’t it sad, though, that America’s own morality has fallen so far that on this issue – protecting children from any homosexual agenda or propaganda – Russia’s standard is higher than our own?

"It's obvious that President Obama and his administration are pushing the gay-lesbian agenda in America today and have sold themselves completely to that which is contrary to God's teaching...

"Our president and his attorney general have turned their backs on God and His standards, and many in the Congress are following the administration's lead. This is shameful."

Graham makes sure to say however, "I am not endorsing President Putin," although he certainly shares Putin's equivocation of homosexuality and pedophilia.

One should also note that Decision Magazine is owned by the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association which Franklin Graham heads.

Previously, Graham said that gays can't make a family due to "different plumbing" and wished that someone like Jerry Falwell would come back and resurrect The Moral Majority. MSNBC host Chris Matthews has also said that he would never have Graham on his show because "he tells hateful lies."

Billy Graham's Son Claims Gay Can't Make Family: VIDEO

FGraham

Franklin Graham, the evangelical leader famous for being the son of Billy Graham, offered up some standard conservative fear-mongering about President Obama's second term and increased support for marriage equality during an interview with CBN's David Brody.

Basically he believes Obama's reelection proves the nation "turned our back on God" and same-sex nuptials are an assault on family because "[it] takes the family away and there is no way you can have a family with two females or two males, if you just think biologically how God made us our plumbing is completely different."

To correct our course, he says, "we need someone like a Jerry Falwell to come back and resurrect the Moral Majority movement." How very retro.
