Obama Gives Stirring Speech at Interfaith Service in Boston: VIDEO

Interfaith_obama

"We finish the race," President Obama told a crowd of survivors, runners, families, and local leaders at an interfaith service in Boston today:

And that’s what the perpetrators of such senseless violence — these small, stunted individuals who would destroy instead of build, and think somehow that makes them important — that’s what they don’t understand. Our faith in each other, our love for each other, our love for country, our common creed that cuts across whatever superficial differences there may be — that is our power. That’s our strength.

That’s why a bomb can’t beat us. That’s why we don’t hunker down. That’s why we don’t cower in fear. We carry on. We race. We strive. We build, and we work, and we love — and we raise our kids to do the same. And we come together to celebrate life, and to walk our cities, and to cheer for our teams. When the Sox and Celtics and Patriots or Bruins are champions again — to the chagrin of New York and Chicago fans  — the crowds will gather and watch a parade go down Boylston Street.

And this time next year, on the third Monday in April, the world will return to this great American city to run harder than ever, and to cheer even louder, for the 118th Boston Marathon. Bet on it.

Bombing

The AP is reporting via Twitter:

Law enforcement official: Arrest imminent in Boston Marathon bombing, suspect to be brought to court.

More:

The official spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Wednesday. The official was not authorized to divulge details of the investigation. The official says the suspect is to be taken into custody by federal marshals and taken to a Boston courthouse.

In related news, CNN reported this morning on the possible identification of a suspect, TPM reports:

[CNN's John] King said he's been told by authorities that video footage from the Lord and Taylor department store and from a local Boston television station has led investigators to believe that they have "clearly identified" the individual who placed one of the explosive devices at the site of the second explosion. The department store on Boylston Street is located near the site of the second explosion.

UPDATE: CNN is now reporting that an arrest has been made. NBC News says not yet.

UPDATE II: The FBI blasted news reports.

Contrary to widespread reporting, there have been no arrests made in connection with the Boston Marathon attack. Over the past day and a half, there have been a number of press reports based on information from unofficial sources that has been inaccurate. Since these stories often have unintended consequences, we ask the media, particularly at this early stage of the investigation, to exercise caution and attempt to verify information through appropriate official channels before reporting.

Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert Thank Boston for Being Brave in the Face of Gross Inhumanity: VIDEO

Boston_stewart

Jon Stewart offered a tribute to the people of Boston at the opening of his show last night.

"Thank you for, in the face of gross inhumanity, inspiring and solidifying my belief in humanity and the people of this country...Oftentimes [NYC and Boston] are accusing each other of various levels of suckitude. But it is in situations like this that we realize it is clearly a sibling rivalry and that we are your brothers and sisters. In this type of event, as a city that knows the feeling of confusion, anger, and grief, and chaos that comes with these events, I can tell you from personal experience, you’ve got a hell of a city going there. And you’ve done an incredible job in the face of all of this."

Colbert took a more humorous approach, offered a similar message:

"When those bombs went off, there were runners who after those bombs went off kept running another two miles to the hospital to donate blood. So, here's what I know. These maniacs may have tried to make life bad for the people of Boston, but all they could do is really show how good those people are."
