Brandon Routh is in Denial
If you're interested in seeing Brandon Routh in something other than a red cape, he's in a short film (with his fiancée) called Denial, now available for download at iTunes. Not sure when it came out but it's a good opportunity to see him flex that acting muscle.

News: Lance & Reichen, Andy Roddick, Crackberries
Heterosexual woman files suit against the state of Washington, saying her male partner should receive health care benefits based on the state's anti-discrimination law that was designed to protect gay and lesbian domestic partners.

Page Six is reporting that unambiguously gay duo Lance and Reichen, who were out in the Hamptons recently to host an event at the Bridgehampton Polo Club, turned up their noses at swank million-dollar estate Stereo house when the accomodations weren't up to their standards: "At 3 a.m., they found the place 'seedy' and the pool covered with a moldy tarp. Stereo co-owner Mike Satsky told Page Six's Sarah Polonsky, 'The Stereo House is a $7 million estate where celebrities from Wilmer Valderrama to Scarlett Johansson and Lydia Hearst have stayed.' The boys ended up staying at WCBS/Ch. 2 meteorologist John Bolaris' house instead."

Chilean gay activists optimistic about country's new attitude toward gays: "There are few people or institutions who would dare to say that homosexuality is perverse, pathological, and that we need to round up the homosexuals and take them to an island. Actually, it was a worldwide coalition of bloggers, activists, people with AIDS and concerned citizens who wrote, emailed and called LIFEbeat to get them to reconsider their decision. Kathy Griffin and "The Gays" on Larry King Live

Along with the admission that her husband Matt methodically stole $72,000 from her bank account and caused her divorce, Kathy Griffin's appearance on Larry King Live last night featured plenty of talk about "the gays" including this bit at the end. Griffin's My Life on the D-List was recently nominated for a Reality Program Prime Time Emmy.
GRIFFIN: Who do I have a girl crush on? I do love Suzanne Somers, I think she's delightful, you know her, she's awesome. And Patricia Arquette I think is really beautiful. I don't know, I think everybody's beautiful like in their way or whatever. I mean I'm not like hot for chicks, but I'm certainly not putting down people who are. And if that's your life choice Larry, I'm not here to judge you.
KING: What do you think of the new Superman?
GRIFFIN: Hot. And the gays love him.
KING: But he's not gay. He was on the show --
GRIFFIN: The gays are almost willing to dump Gyllenhaal for the new Superman. Gyllenhaal's not gay either and the gays all want him. They're done with Cruise, they've had it, he's too crazy. They've moved on to Gyllenhaal and the new Superman. You know the gays are moody. You gotta keep up...
KING: Wait a minute, are you saying there's a gay think?
GRIFFIN: There's like a Rand Corporation for gay people. They get reports together.
KING: Why isn't there a hetero think?
GRIFFIN: There is! Like, all hetero guys want to bang Jolie, right, she's like the hot thing, right? And all gay guys want to bang Gyllenhaal. They like the Brokeback.
KING: Did you like that movie?
GRIFFIN: Of course.
KING: Great movie.
GRIFFIN: I can't quit you. Of course I loved it.
--
But you know, we'd never dump Gyllenhaal for Superman.

Brandon Routh: "I'm Not Gay"
This shot is an outtake from the upcoming issue of Vanity Fair. See the full set here.
Brandon Routh, in Australia for promotion of Superman Returns, told the Sydney Morning Herald that he is prepared for the onslaught of fame: "It will be different. Every day I am learning how to deal with it and make it work for me ... I don't have any secrets so it will be fine."
Of Superman's gay vibe, Routh said: "You find whatever message you want. Everybody is going to interpret the film differently...People will see the movie and realise that Superman is certainly not gay. And I am not (gay) as well, but people will have that discussion as much as they want - it is a topic for people to talk about."
Actually, I wasn't planning on talking about it, but now that you bring it up...

Bryan Singer: Superman is Not Gay
Warner Bros. must be really worried about how Superman's gay image will affect box office if they're sending Bryan Singer out to make statements. The director came out late last week and said that Superman "is probably the most heterosexual character in any movie I've ever made."
The studio doth protest too much. As does DC Comics: "Paul Levitz, president and publisher of Superman owner DC Comics said: 'We were all scratching our heads. He's not a gay character.'" I haven't read a single story that has said that Superman is gay, but there's no denying that the character, with his secrets, his tights, the fuss about the size of his package, his jazz hands, and his co-stars, gives off a distinctly gay vibe, and what's wrong with that?
Warner Bros. should just shrug off the worry and move on. They're only fueling the gay flame by allowing the movie's gay director to continue commenting on it.

Gay Rugby Icon Ian Roberts in Superman Returns

Kudos to Bryan Singer for offering gay rugby icon-turned actor Ian Roberts a Hollywood break, though his casting in Superman Returns does little to quash the movie's gay vibe. Roberts, who has been in the news recently for his appearance at a recent inquest in the murder of Arron Light, says he's thrilled about his stint as a henchman to Kevin Spacey's Lex Luthor.
He'll head to L.A. for the movie's June 21 premiere: "I'm just getting so excited about the trip [to LA] now, it's going to be the absolute highlight of my career."

And just for the record, here's one of the most well-known pin-ups of the hunky Ian Roberts.
And a particularly relevant shot follows after the jump...

Superman: Can Beefcake Kill a Blockbuster?
More specifically, can beefcake that appeals to gay men drive straight male audiences away from a movie? That's the question the L.A. Times attempts to tackle in a piece running today.
An informal poll of six veteran Hollywood marketing executives at rival studios revealed sharply divided opinions over how — or even if — "Superman's" gay attention would affect the film. Two of the executives said the focus could actually expand the film's audience, much as gay moviegoers have responded to the "X-Men" superhero series, which has been praised for its metaphorical plots about acceptance. The first two "X-Men" movies were directed by Bryan Singer, the openly gay filmmaker who also made "Superman Returns." Singer did not respond to an interview request. But four of the movie marketing executives, all of whom declined to speak on the record, said gay "Superman Returns" interest presented two potential box-office problems. First, teenage moviegoers, especially those in conservative states, might be put off by a movie carrying a gay vibe; among some teens, these executives agreed, saying something "is gay" is still the ultimate put-down. Second, the attention threatens to undermine the film's status as a hard-edged action movie, making it feel softer, more romantic, and thus less interesting to young ticket buyers who crave pyrotechnics.
The other major question is, is it a good movie in the first place? How many potential straight ticketbuyers place whether or not the movie has a gay following (ie their own homophobia) as a higher priority than the reviews they've read? Not many, I'd guess. But it's certainly an interesting question. Could the the alleged homophobia of Academy members that was the scapegoat for Brokeback Mountain's loss to Crash at the Oscars play itself out in a broader sense with the American public, even when Superman is not a specifically gay character?
Like the Oscar results, one could spend endless amounts of time debating the equation without ever finding the right path to the answer.

This is ridiculous. A high school teacher shows a 2 1/2 minute clip of Brokeback Mountain to students and an "investigative inquiry" is launched. The clip showed nothing sexual. This isn't the first time the school has been embroiled in gay issues: "Students in Boyd County have been divided in recent years over gay issues since a group of students petitioned to form a gay awareness club at the high school in 2002. A lawsuit ensued and the school district later settled. The agreement called for anti-harassment training for all staff and students." Guess the anti-harassment doesn't extend to teachers attempting to teach tolerance.

Superman: Just One Elbow Flex from Jazz Hands
Folks are saying all kinds of things about the new Superman Returns poster (click for larger versions) including the suggestive placement of a certain peninsula (though that's a bit of a stretch imho).
And the Advocate recently asked, How Gay is Superman? Well, The Hot Blog did a hysterical remix on the poster that proves just how gay he is...
However, the first thing that came to my mind when I saw it was another superhuman who could also stop speeding bullets named Neo.
And lo and behold, it does appear that both Brandon Routh and Keanu Reeves had the same hand coach who knew just the right moves to inject a little...drama.

Superman Returns and Brandon Routh Flies

This appears to be the first clip of Brandon Routh in flight, from the upcoming Bryan Singer-directed Superman Returns. It's a clip from an Australian Coke commercial. I think in these close-ups Routh looks distinctly like a young Kyle McLachlan.

In the clip, Superman is flying over a freeway when the tail section of an airliner bursts into flame and breaks off. Superman must then save the beleaguered airliner.

(via brandonrouth.com)
Routh appeared at L.A. boutique Kitson yesterday, where a ton of new Superman swag went on sale.
