Top Brazilian Bishop Endorses Civil Unions for Gay Couples

Leonardo_SteinerThe secretary general of the National Confederation of Brazilian Bishops has endorsed civil unions for same-sex couples, becoming the first national church leader to do so since Pope Francis suggested back in March that the Catholic Church might consider supporting such arrangements.

BuzzFeed reports:

“There needs to be a dialog on the rights of shared life between people of the same sex who decide to live together. They need legal support from society,” Bishop Leonardo Steiner said.

Steiner made clear the church still opposes marriage for same-sex couples, which Brazil’s National Council of Justice made legal last year. “The difficulty is in deciding that marriages of people of the same sex are equivalent to marriage or family,” Steiner said, adding that he believes the measure should have been voted on by congress instead of being enacted by the judiciary.

Not exactly a ringing endorsement of gay relationships, but certainly a step in the right direction.

AllOut and Singer Scarlett Rabe Want You To Hear Their ‘Battle Cry’: VIDEO

Allout

Activist group AllOut (you may recall from their Principle 6 campaign in the lead up to the Sochi Olympics) has joined forces with singer and ally Scarlett Rabe to create a new video highlighting the work done by the AllOut community set to Rabe’s first single, “Battle Cry.” The video itself consists of images submitted by AllOut members over the last several years, from campaigns around anti-gay laws in Russia and Uganda to anti-LGBT violence in Brazil. Said Rabe of her involvement in the project,

“Throughout history, people and governments have used religion, nationality, skin color or other hateful excuses to justify violence and discrimination against human beings. Today, it is still a crime to be gay in 77 countries. I’m honored to be able to add my voice to All Out’s exclamation that everyone deserves the basic human right to live and to love.”

'Cristiano Ronaldo is Gay', Maradona a 'Maricon' Say Homophobic T-Shirts Targeting Football Stars

Brazil

Just ahead of this summer's World Cup, which will take place in Brazil, an apparel company in that country has been selling homophobic t-shirts targeting some well-known soccer players.

Think Progress reports: Ronaldo

Though some of them are benign — one refers to Italian striker Mario Balotelli as a “loser” and another pokes fun at the French by reminding them that former star Zinedine Zidane is “over” — others are hardly so. One of the shirts says plainly that “C. Ronaldo is gay,” referring to Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo. Another calls Argentina legend Diego Maradona a “maricon,” a slang Portuguese and Spanish term for “faggot.”

The t-shirts have apparently been selling well. They're currently sold out.

According to Caught Off Side, the designer, Sergio K, has denied any claims of homophobia.

Sergio K has attempted to defend his clothing line saying his shirts are “misunderstood” and that “this collection is in the irreverent vein of our brand.” He has also rejected accusations of homophobia stating “It’s not homophobic to me, homophobia is another story. The t-shirts don’t say attack them, and they do not incite violence.”

An online petition asking Sergio K to stop producing the t-shirts has been making the rounds on the Internet.

Meet Brazil's Hottest Subway Security Guard: PHOTOS

William_leon_1

Meet William Leon (or as they say in Portuguese Guilherme Leão). He is an unfortunately straight, 176 pound, 22-year-old subway security guard in Sao Paulo, Brazil who stands 6 feet tall with green eyes. He recently become an internet heartthrob after being voted as the “hottest subway guard” in a cheeky workplace promotion.

The company that hired him said, “Our custodians of the subway are not only beautiful they are trained in immobilization techniques, first aid and care to the public."

Since winning the contest, he has told reporters, “I’m not able to work because of harassment: ask me for photos, autographs, interviews. [They’re even able] to recognize me out of uniform!"

He has also reportedly worked in China for a brief while as a model. If you want to, you can continue drooling over him at both of his Instagram accounts.

Sao Paulo Skateboard Gang Arrested for Murder of Gay Teen

Oliveira

Police in Sao Paulo, Brazil have arrested a 'gang of skateboarders' who they believe have been involved in a series of attacks and robberies on gay men, International Business Times reports:

The six suspects, aged between 16 and 23, confessed to killing 18-year-old Bruno Borges de Oliveira above), police said.

De Oliveira died of injuries suffered during a brutal early-morning mugging in central Sao Paulo. He was stripped of his shoes, mobile phone, and public transport ticket before being punched, kicked and repeatedly hit on the head with a skateboard. He was on his way home after a night out in the famous LGBT Frei Caneca Street. Friends fled the assault and alerted police.

"When we came back he was already dead," one friend, who has not been named, told G1 Globo website.

In mid-January we reported on a similar incident in which a 17-year-boy was found dead and brutally beaten after leaving a gay club.

IB Times adds:

Police said that the gang had previously targeted homosexuals. The skateboarders allegedly carried out a series of dawn raids against people leaving gay nightclubs in recent weeks.

"They chose their victims for being gay," police spokesman Ruy Ferraz Fontes told Folha de Sao Paulo newspaper. "They stole the victim's belongings as part of a ritual of humiliation."

On the same night that De Oliveira was killed, at least another three people were mugged by the gang, police said.

Brazilian Television Had its First Gay Male Kiss Last Night: VIDEO

Brazil

Two men kissed for the first time on Brazilian TV on Friday in Amor à Vida, a soap opera produced by Rede Globo, the country's largest network, as the result of a campaign on social media.

The kiss took place between the show's closeted villain, Felix (Matthew Solano), who redeemed himself in the eyes of the audience and came together with Niko (Thiago Fragoso) after Felix's father suffered a stroke and they decided that their lives would be better together rather than apart.

Back in 2005, hunky soap star Bruno Gagliasso filmed a gay kiss that was supposed to have aired on the popular soap América, but the scene was cut from the broadcast.
