In New GLAAD PSA Campaign Created by Brett Ratner, Allies Come Out of the Closet for Equality: VIDEO

Back in February, GLAAD announced that Brett Ratner, who was ousted as Oscar producer last November after his Tower Heist Q&A in which he made anti-gay remarks, would be producing and directing a campaign in collaboration with the group.

RatnerRatner called working with GLAAD "a positive and enlightening experience" in the wake of his remarks, and his PSAs have just been released. They feature a number of well-known celebs and allies "coming out of the closet" for equality.

Jackie Chan, Tamala Jones, Giada De Laurentiis, DeRay Davis, Hudson Taylor, Jaime King, Jason Alexander, Kristen Johnston, Sarah Shahi, and Pauley Perrette are featured in the first set. I've posted four of them above.

According to GLAAD, "Comcast and NBCUniversal will serve as a leading media partner for the PSA campaign, contributing $1.5 million in national airtime on its Xfinity TV cable systems and bringing this important message to more than 20 million homes over the next year."

From his speech, "Homophobe. Bigot. Gay-basher. Ignorant frat boy. Fat, Jewish pig. I was called all of these names when I foolishly used a gay slur in a misguided attempt to be funny during an interview. Do I believe what I was called to be true? Aside from the Jewish and fat part? No, absolutely not. But I learned a valuable lesson: a word can matter, whether it's said with malice or a joke."

Seth Rogen Rips Brett Ratner, Chris Brown at the Independent Spirit Awards: VIDEO

Rogen

Seth Rogen hosted the Independent Spirit Awards in Santa Monica on Saturday, and took the opportunity to lay into Brett Ratner for the anti-gay slur that got him rejected as Oscar producer last fall. In the same joke, he also took aim at Grammy producers for celebrating Chris Brown.

Said Rogen:

"Without awards season we wouldn't know what a horrible bigot Brett Ratner is. It's good. Good to know. That Ratner sh*t was crazy. That was nuts. Are we really surprised that he said that though, honestly? Come on. Who was like, 'Ratner? I thought Ratner was Mr. PC, that's weird.' It's very strange though. That was crazy."

He added:

"I honestly bet, though, that Brett Ratner wishes that he was organizing the Grammys, because they seem much more forgiving than the Oscars, altogether. Seriously. You say a few hateful things they don't let you within 100 years of the Oscars. You could literally beat the sh*t out of a nominee and they let you perform twice at the Grammys."

The mark above comes at about 5:00 into Rogen's opening monologue, AFTER THE JUMP...

Brett Ratner to Produce and Direct Equality-Focused Series of PSAs in GLAAD Collaboration

Brett Ratner, who was ousted as Oscar producer last November after his Tower Heist Q&A in which he made the remark "rehearsal's for fags", will be producing and directing a campaign in collaboration with GLAAD, the organization announced today:

RatnerThe upcoming video series will feature a diverse group of Hollywood celebrities, athletes, musicians and politicians ‘coming out of the closet’ as supporters of equality. Participants will share personal stories about why and how they support the LGBT community and call on Americans to do the same.

Says Ratner, who met with GLAAD's Board of Directors, as well as 84th Annual Academy Awards Brian Grazer and director and producer Bryan Singer, over the weekend: “Working together with GLAAD has been a very positive and enlightening experience for me, and I could not be more pleased to be developing this crucial campaign to help educate people that we all share the same humanity. I am excited to get to work on this program and hope that minds and hearts are opened by what we create.”

GOProud's Chris Barron Compares GLAAD to Terrorists

Chris Barron, Chairman of the Board of gay conservative group GOProud, scolds Brett Ratner in a piece today at Tucker Carlson's Daily Caller for cowing to the "gay Gestapo" who brought attention to Ratner's "rehearsal's for fags" remark, and the group he says is "its leading mouthpiece", GLAAD:

BarronI am incredibly disappointed that Ratner gave into the bullying of GLAAD. Ratner should never have penned the ridiculously over-the-top apology letter that he did (or should I say sign the ridiculous letter that was clearly written by GLAAD’s PC communications department).

Instead of agreeing to be sent to GLAAD’s re-education camp, Ratner should have stood up to the gay Gestapo. He apologized for what he said, he admitted it was stupid, and agreeing to become the latest pawn in GLAAD’s never-ending ideological warfare is akin to negotiating with terrorists. Every time Ratner or another Hollywood idiot gives into GLAAD, they are simply encouraging GLAAD to continue its partisan jihad.

Before GLAAD or anyone else on the gay left get to hold others accountable, they should be forced to hold themselves accountable. GLAAD should be forced to live by the standard it expects the rest of the world to live by.

Barron's vitriol appears to be inspired by an ongoing feud with blogger Joe Jervis and at least partly for questioning (as others, including this blog, did), the legitimacy of an alleged attack on A-List Dallas cast member and GOProud member Taylor Garrett.

Seethes Barron:

On two separate occasions, Jervis has openly ridiculed incidents of violent anti-gay hate crimes against gay conservatives. Apparently, words and images don’t matter to GLAAD’s members as long as the subject of those attacks is someone they disagree with politically.

Radio host and activist Michelangelo Signorile has already called out Barron plenty on the hypocrisy of his own bullying claims:

Barron and GOProud now also support House speaker John Boehner defending section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act in federal appeals court after President Obama announced he believed the law is unconstitutional — though Barron himself is legally married to a man in Washington, D.C. Barron’s husband, to whom he refers a lot in his tweets, is a D.C. teacher who wrote a piece in MetroWeekly about how kids learn to be bullies from adults who bully one another. But there couldn’t possibly be a better example of an adult bullying other adults than Barron tweeting this: “The gay left = the American Taliban. Hateful, angry and dumb as sh*t.” He’s also tweeted that Andrew Sullivan is “fat,” “pathetic,” and “self-important” and that Meghan McCain is “intensely stupid.”

Eddie Murphy Seen as Possible Casualty of Ratner Oscar Departure

Will Eddie Murphy stay on as Oscar host now that Brett Ratner has stepped down?

NY Mag's Vulture wonders:

Murphy_ratnerIn a recent Rolling Stone article, Murphy said, "I only want to do what I really want to do, otherwise I'm content to sit here and play my guitar all day. I always tell people now that I'm a semi-retired gentleman of leisure, and occasionally I'll go do some work to break the boredom up." It makes one wonder if seeing his Tower Heist director vanish will make the Oscars fall into the category of things Murphy doesn't "really want to do." One well-placed Academy member intimately familiar with the Oscar telecast explains to Vulture that the odds of Murphy remaining as host have now dropped to even money, because now he can step down with minimal PR damage: “It’s like when Mike Nichols asks Meryl Streep to do a movie, and then suddenly, Mike Nichols is not doing the movie anymore," says our source. "There’s no reflection on her if she then steps away from the project. But [Murphy] would have to do it fast, before a new producer is named. Otherwise, that’s just, well ... that’s just shitty.”

The AP makes the same note: "Brett Ratner's resignation Tuesday as producer of the 2012 Academy Awards raises questions about whether Eddie Murphy will remain as the show's host. Murphy, who worked with Ratner on the just-released comedy 'Tower Heist,' was considered an unconventional choice for Oscar host, hand-picked by Ratner to shake up the staid awards ceremony and draw in new - and younger- viewers."
