Interview: Cheyenne Jackson 'Gets On With It' in Two Memorable Gay Films

BY NATHANIEL ROGERS

Cheyenne Jackson's gone Hollywood. Though the 39 year old actor and self proclaimed "Broadway Baby" came to fame via musicals like "All Shook Up" (Theater World Award, 2005) and "Xanadu" (Drama Desk nomination 2008) and promises to return, TV and film came calling soon thereafter and appear to have stuck. His most notable early filmed roles were as a heroic passenger in the Oscar-nominated true story United 93 (2006) and a recurring gig on Emmy favorite 30 Rock as Danny Baker, a singing actor with a voice so beautiful he gave Jenna Maroney "rage strokes."

That first flush of mainstream success seemed to have been briefly eclipsed in the media by upheavals in his personal life, a divorce from his first husband and sobering up. But Cheyenne is eager to move on from that topic which he feels was overblown by the media. "Definitely with the gay press, it was rough there for a bit. Things were never not together; I think that's the misconception," he explains. Was it a rough patch? "I guess other people can think of it that way but to me it was just the next chapter. Time to clean up."

And the next chapter is moving along well. After his brief note-perfect cameo in the Liberace movie Behind the Candelabra (2013) he's filmed several more roles including a small part as half of a gay cop couple affectionately referred to as 'The Policewomen' in one of this year's very best films LOVE IS STRANGE (2014, reviewed here). Ira Sachs moving drama recently won a handful of Spirit Award nominations.

As a longtime fan of Cheyenne Jackson, I confess to an atypical case of the nerves during our phone interview from separate coasts. Cheyenne helpfully tells me to imagine him in his underwear, and we both laugh immediately realizing that is not going to help. 'No wait. Maybe not. Maybe not'.

NR: Things seems to be on a real uptick in terms of your movie career!

CHEYENNE JACKSON: I’ve really kind of thrown myself into film and it’s been great. Some make their way to theaters, some go video on demand, some get nominated for things. I live out here now so it’s easier.

NR: Your new film SIX DANCES IN SIX WEEKS just opened this weekend. We don't see Gena Rowlands in lead roles much these days but she's one of the most influential actors of all time. How did your casting happen and how nerve wracking was is to work with her?

Jackson

Cheyenne Jackson and boyfriend Jason Landau were married Saturday at a private estate in Encino, California. The newlyweds first started dating last October and announced their engagement back in February.

Wrote Cheyenne on Instagram: "M A R R I E D. Life is Beautiful"

The ceremony, described by Jackson as having a "woodsy" themed feel to it, was attended by some 200 guests - including fellow Glee actors Jane Lynch and Jesse Tyler Ferguson.

"This means a new beginning for us," Jackson told People. "It was love at first sight and this is just the culmination of that."

Congrats guys!

Actor Cheyenne Jackson will marry his boyfriend Jason Landau six months after divorcing his husband of 13 years Monte Lapka, Us Weekly reports:

"They've already begun planning the wedding!" the insider says of the happy couple, who went public with their romance in October 2013, and then attended the 2013 amfAR Inspiration Gala together in December. (More recently, they hit up the Kari Feinstein Style Lounge at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah.)

This will be Jackson's second marriage. He and Lapka married in New York in September 2011 after 11 years together; they announced in August that they had "mutually decided to divorce."

Manny Perez and Cheyenne Jackson are New York's Finest Cop Couple in 'Love is Strange': Exclusive Photo

Love is Strange, director Ira Sachs's feature film follow-up to Keep the Lights On, is shooting in New York and stars Manny Perez and Cheyenne Jackson, who play a pair of 'New York's Finest', and a couple in the film.

Along with this exclusive behind-the-scenes photo, producers sent along a synopsis:

Academy Award-nominated John Lithgow will star alongside Alfred Molina in Ira Sachs’ Love Is Strange, the NYC-set drama about a just-married gay couple whose honeymoon is complicated when circumstances force them to temporarily separate.

When George (Molina) loses his job, his partner of 38 years, painter Ben (Lithgow), moves in with his nephew and George with the gay cops next door. It’s the next pic from Sachs after 2012′s award-winning Keep The Lights On and the first collaboration by longtime pals Lithgow and Molina. “We’ll be playing the main roles in the best script I’ve read in years,” said Lithgow in a statement, “a vivid portrait of marriage, with all its joy, folly, and occasional heartbreak.”

No word on how Perez and Jackson react to their new houseguest, but perhaps you can find out by beating out the highest bidders for a non-speaking walk-on role in the film over at Charity Buzz!

Cheyenne Jackson Discusses Divorce from Husband, Joining AA: AUDIO

Actor Cheyenne Jackson appeared on The Frank DeCaro Show on SiriusXM OutQ yesterday and cleared up rumors that his personal life is spiraling out of control.

Said Jackson to DeCaro:

Jackson“I do have a mustache, but it’s for the new Ira Sachs movie with Alfred Molina and Marissa Tomei and John Lithgow, so that’s what that’s for. I do have a new tattoo, and it’s personal. I’m happy to tell… [the story behind it]…now because it’s out there, but you know, it’s for my dad. It’s song lyrics from an old Elvis song that he used to sing to me when I was little, and it was going to be a Christmas present, but I decided to give it to him early. And it was a beautiful, beautiful moment between us and, you know, it’s very special—and for that to be kind of reduced to gossip fodder is obnoxious, and well, you know what, I wasn’t going to go there but I will say that special moment with my dad came from something else that came out [Wednesday] in one of these f**king [reports] is that I’m in AA, and that happens to be true. I started my recovery last summer, and it became something I really wanted to focus on in my life, and repairing relationships with my family and such, so this is a really strong, beautiful time for me, personally. It also is a very sad time because I’m going through a divorce, but yeah, I mean, you know, some members of my family didn’t even know I was in Alcoholics Anonymous, so that was pretty f**ked up to actually have people [find out that way]…“

Added Jackson, when asked how he felt about being an out gay man having to issue a statement about his divorce:

“Yes, it is weird. But it’s a fact. And you just have to accept the way things are. Sometimes I think I am a little naïve to think that people even care, but they do. So you have to understand the significance that your relationship had to other people and I know that our marriage meant a lot to a lot of people…so that’s not lost on me, and I respect that…I didn’t want to have to say anything. The royals, the monarchy over in England always say ‘Never complain, never explain.’  And so I’d love to adhere to that, but the fact of the matter is, I did have to say something.  It was getting a little ugly, and my sister and brother were like ‘What’s up?’ So, it is kind of weird to have to make a statement about it….and Monte [Lapka] and I talked about it and decided what we wanted the statement to say…and it was nobody else’s business….yes, it is weird, but it is a fact.”
