NOM Spokesman: ESPN's Chris Broussard More Courageous Than Jason Collins

Broussard

NOM's Jennifer Roback-Morse told Lutheran Public Radio on Tuesday that it took much more courage for ESPN's Chris Broussard to condemn Jason Collins for coming out than it did for Collins to tell the world that he's gay.

MorseSaid Morse:

I think he required more courage than the basketball player did. I mean, it requires no courage at all today to say “I’m gay.” It’s my understanding [Collins] got a phone call from the president congratulating him on his courage. Well how much courage can it take if the president’s going to pick up the phone and give you a personal phone call, you know? But in the meantime, this fellow who says, you know, ‘I’m a Christian, and I believe that sex belongs in marriage and it belongs in man-woman marriage,’ to say that, now that will bring the whole wrath of society down upon your head. So that’s the guy that really required the courage and I give him a lot of credit for it.

Morse added: "I was actually quite touched by his comments because – I hate to say this because the gay lobby will certainly pick up on this – but I want you to know I did not coach this man at all whatsoever, but he sounds like a spokesman for the Ruth Institute because he’s there saying all of these sins are sexual sins."

Pat Robertson Defends ESPN's Broussard, Says 'Nothing Bigoted' About Calling Jason Collins an Abomination: VIDEO

Robertson

Pat Robertson yesterday defended ESPN commentator Chris Broussard, who caused a firestorm when he said Jason Collins was 'in rebellion God' for coming out as gay, Raw Story reports.

Said Robertson:

“Somehow we’ve said if it’s heterosexual fornication, it’s bad; if it’s homosexual fornication — that used to be called an abomination in the Bible — now it’s a protected civil right. And so somebody that says that that kind of conduct is sinful is now being pilloried in the press. He’s telling the truth! This is what the Bible says!...You can’t tell them if they want to go to hell or heaven, that’s their business. But don’t tell somebody that he can’t speak specifically about what the Christian faith says about certain conduct. There isn’t anything bigoted about that...So, our hat’s off to somebody who’s brave enough to say it. But, whew, let’s hope the people at ESPN will man up and defend their guy for speaking what is truth."

And so far, ESPN is standing by him.

ESPN Sportscaster Chris Broussard Stands by Anti-Gay Remarks About Jason Collins: VIDEO

Broussard

ESPN sportscaster Chris Broussard clarified the Christian nonsense that came out of his piehole yesterday:

Today on OTL, as part of a larger, wide-ranging discussion on today's news, I offered my personal opinion as it relates to Christianity, a point of view that I have expressed publicly before. I realize that some people disagree with my opinion and I accept and respect that. As has been the case in the past, my beliefs have not and will not impact my ability to report on the NBA. I believe Jason Collins displayed bravery with his announcement today and I have no objection to him or anyone else playing in the NBA.

ESPN said it regretted the distraction:

We regret that a respectful discussion of personal viewpoints became a distraction from today’s news.  ESPN is fully committed to diversity and welcomes Jason Collins’ announcement.

No word on any further repercussions.

What Broussard said, if you missed it:

Personally, I don’t believe that you can live an openly homosexual lifestyle or an openly, like premarital sex between heterosexuals. If you’re openly living that type of lifestyle, then the Bible says you know them by their fruits. It says that, you know, that’s a sin. If you’re openly living in unrepentant sin, whatever it may be, not just homosexuality, whatever it maybe, I believe that’s walking in open rebellion to God and to Jesus Christ. So I would not characterize that person as a Christian because I don’t think the bible would characterize them as a Christian.

ESPN Sportscaster Chris Broussard Says Jason Collins is 'Living in Unrepentant Sin' - VIDEO

Broussard

ESPN sportscaster Chris Broussard had a few things to say about NBA player Jason Collins, who became the first out gay male player in pro sports today, Think Progress reports.

Said Broussard in a segment with gay ESPN colleague LZ Granderson:

Personally, I don’t believe that you can live an openly homosexual lifestyle or an openly, like premarital sex between heterosexuals. If you’re openly living that type of lifestyle, then the Bible says you know them by their fruits. It says that, you know, that’s a sin. If you’re openly living in unrepentant sin, whatever it may be, not just homosexuality, whatever it maybe, I believe that’s walking in open rebellion to God and to Jesus Christ.
