Dr. Phil Lambastes Clint McCance's 'Non-Apology Apology'

Philcooper
On Anderson Cooper's 360, Dr. Phil dissected Cooper's interview with Clint McCance in which the Arkansas school board member "apologized" for his hateful Facebook posts. Dr. Phil's conclusion: "This isn't really an apology."

He added: "My concern is that, because this is getting so much attention....the downside of it is that gay, lesbian transgender and questioning youth right now can say 'see that's how they really feel' and we drive them further back."

Watch the breakdown of the "apology," AFTER THE JUMP.

Watch: Clint McCance Resigns from Midland School Board in Arkansas, Apologizes for Anti-Gay Remarks

UPDATED

Midland School Board Member Clint McCance told Anderson Cooper that he is resigning from the school board following a firestorm of outrage over remarks he made on Facebook celebrating the suicides of teens who killed themselves after homophobic bullying.

Said McCance: "I am going to resign from the school board. It is to -- to help my community, to help my school. I don't want them to receive bad press or have a distraction because of some ignorant comments that have -- that I made. If they decide later, you know, a year, five years, 10 years from now to vote me back in, if my constituents want that, then -- then I will run again."

Added McCance: "I -- you know, I would -- would like to extend an apology, especially to those to those -- to those families that have lost children, not just gay, heterosexual, all -- all children that feel like suicide's the only way out.
It's a -- it saddens me, and -- but especially for those five -- five families that have just recently lost children. You know, I have -- I have brought more hurt on them with these comments. And that was never my intention. And I apologize for that, because they don't -- they don't deserve that. And I do feel genuinely bad for that, for them."

Cooper also spoke with the parents of Asher Brown, a 13-year-old who killed himself as a result of bullying in September. Brown's parents had a message for McCance as well.

Watch: Anderson Cooper Speaks to Ellen DeGeneres About Arkansas School Board Member Clint McCance

Anderson_sellen

Following Anderson Cooper's interview with Arkansas School Board Member Clint McCance, who resigned over remarks he made on Facebook attacking gays and celebrating the deaths of gay youth who commit suicide, Ellen DeGeneres appeared on AC360 to discuss McCance and anti-gay bullying.

Said DeGeneres of McCance's homophobic rants:

"If we allowed this to happen from someone like him, then we -- what message does that send to a kid? What message does that send to a child in school that says, 'Well, you know, he's saying it, why can't we say it? And we want them to die, too.' I mean, it sends a horrible message."

DeGeneres added:

“It would not be acceptable if someone used the N-word. When the civil rights movement happened, it took not just the community of blacks to make a change, but white people needed to step in and say this is unacceptable. We cannot tolerate this and treat any citizen with lesser value. And, I think, as a gay person, I would like to personally ask every heterosexual person out there who is appalled by this to – we need your help now. This is -- this is -- this is absurd. ”

Watch: Protesters Call for Resignation of Homophobic Extremist School Board Member Clint McCance in Arkansas

Demo_mccance

A protest was held today outside Midland High School in Arkansas today, demanding Clint McCance, the school board member who has outraged the nation after remarks celebrating the suicides of gay and lesbian youth on Facebook, resign.

The Arkansas Times reports that 35 protesters were on hand calling for McCance's resignation, but that there were also counter-protesters:

"David reports that about 10 counter-protesters, including a preacher from Oil Trough, arrived in Ford pickup bearing a Christian flag and an American flag. They said they were not present to stand up for gays or straights but to 'stand up for God.' There was a large contingent of police on hand, including six state troopers and some local police, and so far all has been peaceful. Demonstrators were ordered away from the front of school because law officers said they were impeding traffic. They were moved to the edge of a ditch behind the school...Three of the group calling for McCance's resignation, including a former Midland High student, were invited into school offices to speak with Superintendent Dean Stanley and School Board president Bryson Wood."
