Lady Gaga Fires Back at PETA Over Fur: 'Please Credit Hermes'

Yesterday I posted a letter from PETA VP Dan Mathews to Lady Gaga objecting to the fact that she wore fur on several recent occasions.

GagafurGaga fired back over Twitter late yesterday:

"For those press and such who are writing about whether or not my fur is actually real, please don't forget to credit the designer HERMES. Thank You! LOVE, gaga"

Mathew suggested in his letter that her response would determine whether she would be "targeted" like Kim Kardashian, who was flour-bombed at a red carpet event.

PETA VP Warns Lady Gaga She May Be 'Targeted' Like Kim Kardashian for Wearing Fur

EXCLUSIVE

Towleroad has obtained a letter sent today by gay PETA Senior VP Dan Mathews to Lady Gaga's rep at 42 West, Amanda Silverman. In the letter, Mathews asks Gaga about two recent photos of her wearing designer fur apparel, and a promotional poster for Robert Rodriguez' Machete Kills film in which she is draped in a wolf carcass.

GagaMathews warns Gaga that she should clarify her position on the fur industry or risk becoming a target like Kim Kardashian.

Mathews' letter:

Dear Gaga,

Many of your gay fans, I among them, have long admired what you told Ellen: "I hate fur, and I don't wear fur." I included a link because these recent photos of you in fox and rabbit and with a wolf carcass make it appear that you have amnesia. I'm also including this brief video hosted by Tim Gunn showing the violent cruelty that you promote when you wear fur. What happened? Are your stylists telling you that it's fake, or are you a turncoat? Many gays are animal advocates because we recognize that the same arrogance and indifference that some have toward animal suffering has at times been directed toward us personally because of our orientation. PETA has long participated in Pride events around the country, and just last week, we helped lead protests against Chick-fil-A. But by wearing those dumb furs in a heat wave, you're making yourself a target just like the mindless Kim Kardashian. As we plan our fall campaigns, please tell us whether what you gracefully told Ellen was heartfelt or just a pose.

We await your reply.

Sincerely,

Dan Mathews
Senior VP
PETA

Kardashian was flour-bombed by a PETA activist in March at a red carpet event.

PETA Leader Dan Mathews and His Boyfriend Stage Kiss Protest on North Carolina Republican Party HQ Sign

Ncrp

PETA Senior VP Dan Mathews sent this along to Towleroad as a passionate reaction to the state's recent passage of Amendment One:

Hi from Raleigh! My guy Jack Ryan and I responded to NC’s hateful ban on gay marriage with a little love. We were in town with The B52s, who made an equality plea from stage, but we decided to bring the message to the streets. Our first thought was "we aren’t gonna take this lying down!" But that’s just what we ended up doing…

PETA VP Dan Mathews Blasts Atlanta Pride for Circuit Party at Aquarium

Out PETA Senior Vice President Dan Mathews was in Atlanta during the recent Pride celebrations and was troubled by a circuit party he heard about planned for the Georgia Aquarium:

I had never been inside an aquarium before--just outside as a demonstrator. I only learned of this gala when I arrived from Virginia to work PETA's booth at the gay pride festival in Piedmont Park. I found it ironic that my seemingly sophisticated subculture would celebrate freedom in a building that celebrates captivity.

MathewsMathews decided to investigate the party rather than protest it from outside, and was particularly concerned about the effect of ear-splitting dance music on the aquarium's beluga whales (particularly a 16-year-old named Beethoven, below):

Like gays, belugas are very social beings who in nature hang out in large, often exclusively same-sex groups called "pods." They are Arctic animals who travel thousands of miles each year in the wild, guided by an intricate sonar system centered in what looks like a bump on their forehead. They make high-pitched squeaks and whistles that bounce off the ocean floor, the polar ice caps and the coast to help them migrate, forage, breed and socialize.

This sonar system, which combines all their key senses, is thwarted in the relatively tiny aquarium tanks, and the trend in recent years of loud parties designed not for education but for extra profit has further devastated the lives and psyches of these uniquely gifted animals. The UN may have banned the torture of prisoners with music, but it is routinely practiced at the Georgia Aquarium.

BeethovenThe aquarium's guide, who was stationed at the tank to answer questions, said that loud music is especially bothersome to the whales:

"Especially the males―as soon as the music starts pounding, they go nuts and start attacking the harbor seals in the tanks. We had Jazz Fridays this summer, and I can't say many of the animals in any of the exhibits were fans. When the music starts, they get to fighting."

Mathews says he hopes the organizers will choose a more humane venue next year.

I wonder if Beluga whales have a tolerance for more mellow types of music? Mathews' post made me think of the video I featured several weeks ago of the Beluga whale in Mystic, Connecticut being serenaded by a Mexican mariachi band. That particular whale seemed more fascinated than upset.
