Neil Patrick Harris Tells Howard Stern He Was Offered Job as Letterman's 'Late Show' Replacement: AUDIO

Nphlateshow

Neil Patrick Harris sat down with Howard Stern today to talk about his career, how coming out affected it, and what we may see from him in the future. The former star of How I Met Your Mother and current glamazon of Broadway (in Hedwig and the Angry Inch) told Stern that CBS approached him to host the Late Show after David Letterman bid the program farewell. NPH was looking for something a little more theatrical, though.

Vulture reports:

"[Les Moonves and CBS entertainment chairman Nina Tassler] called me in and sat me down and asked if [Late Show] was something I'd be interested in doing," Harris says. "In that instance, I felt like I knew what my skillsets were and I kind of knew what it is that I wanted to do after [How I Met Your Mother] … so I was surprised he pitched me that idea," he says. He wasn't interested in the 11:30 slot, nor was he interested in the 12:30 one. "I think I would get bored of the repetition fast, and the structure of it is so set," Harris says. "I don't have any interest in doing monologue, commercial, sketch, guest, guest, guest, musical act, good night."

Which is not to say Harris wouldn't be interested in another kind of show. "I liked this weekly variety thing," he says. "I think if it's weekly, and people really want to see it, and you trust that there's a lot of really great shit on there, then you're gonna get the guests to want to come on there — a weekly thing you'd have more time to prep for stuff, you could pre-tape stuff that would be really exciting, you could flesh it out more."

Rachel Maddow Talks Politics on Late Night as Stephen Colbert Acknowledges Letterman: VIDEO

Maddow_letterman

Yesterday we all heard that Stephen Colbert would be replacing David Letterman on The Late Show when he retires. Colbert acknowledged the news on his show last night.

"I do not envy whoever they try to put in that chair."

Rachel Maddow also reported on the news, in an interesting segment about politics and late night television. Maddow took a look at the rare and powerful moments when late night hosts decided to bring up politics, including a super-awkward moment between Jay Leno and Michele Bachmann when he asked her to respond to the "pray away the gay" controversy with her husband Marcus.

Maddow wonders what it will means for Colbert as he takes over the "mostly apolitical" world of late night.
