The place they took me to was very close to a mosque or actually in the courtyard – I could hear the call to prayer very clearly. When they hauled me out of the car, they beat me unconscious. Late the next day, they came to me and said, 'We know you are gay.' They pulled out a list of names and started reading them ... I knew four who were still alive. One they had already killed. They interrogated me for three hours that night. They demanded I give them names of other gays. At night they got a broomstick. They used it to rape me."

When he was about 14 or 15, he confided in me that he was gay and it was just between the two of us. I kept his secret. I don't think he ever sat down with my sister and told her the way he did with me, but she accepted him just the same. Demetri Martin, Conan O'Brien, and Shaquille O'Neal Freak Out About Gay Kiss in Taking Woodstock

Martindemetri

Demetri Martin appeared on The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien last night to talk about his new film Taking Woodstock, based on the memoir by Elliot Tiber, the gay man who helped facilitate the legendary rock fest.

After describing the uncomfortable feeling he got after reading the first couple chapters and discovering he'd be playing a gay man, Martin discussed the horror he felt when he learned he'd have to kiss a man onscreen. Upon hearing that news, Shaquille O'Neal moved away from Martin on the sofa (above), eliciting gales of laughter from Conan and the audience. Here's my rough transcript:

Martin MARTIN: There's a scene in the movie where I have to kiss a guy, where I have to make out with this guy. (big laughter as Shaq moves away on couch) . Ang [Lee], the director said, listen, in that scene you have to kiss a girl first, and then you push her away, and then you kiss the guy. We can cast your girlfriend if you want....So the day comes, and I'm kind of dreading it but I'm like  my girlfriend will be there so that's cool. We do the first take. I kiss my girlfriend, I have to push  push her away. And then I have to go really make out with the guy in front of her. And I hadn't anticipated...

CONAN: The weirdness of doing this in front of your girlfriend.

MARTIN: And then, like eight takes later...we keep doing it over and over again. And it was weird cause it was like girlfriend, push her away, guy, oh yeah I want to kiss you, and then, okay girlfriend again...I had like 500 Altoids that night. I thought it would make a difference.

CONAN: It doesn't really, I know.

New Trailer for Ang Lee's Taking Woodstock

Ang1

A trailer has arrived for Ang Lee's Taking Woodstock, the adaptation of the memoir Taking Woodstock: A True Story of a Riot, a Concert, and a Life by Elliot Tiber, with Tom Monte.

Ang3 Taking Woodstock tells the story of Tiber, the gay man who helped facilitate Woodstock, providing the permit that made the Festival possible, as well as the eventual location on his milkman Max Yasgur's farm.

The film stars Demetri Martin as Tiber, Imelda Staunton and Henry Goodman  play Tiber's parents, Jonathan Groff plays Woodstock organizer Michael Lang; Emile Hirsch plays a recently returned Vietnam vet, Eugene Levy plays Yasgur, and Liev Schreiber plays a transvestite named Vilma. Jeffrey Dean Morgan plays a closeted married man having an affair with Tiber, and Paul Dano and Zoe Kazan play a hippie couple attending the concert.

Emile Hirsch talked about the mudslide scene (below) last year, to EW: "The mud's pretty cold. It's later in the year than it was during Woodstock. We were all shivering, and we had these silver-foil space blankets that miraculously keep you really warm...I did a Superman slide down a hill, and started turning on my back. I was covered in mud. I think there was pig crap mixed in, because we all smelled like crap."

Check out the trailer AFTER THE JUMP, which Demitri Martin introduces in his trademark drawing style...
