Evandro Soldati Gets Sheepish for Dolce & Gabbana

Photographer Michael Roberts has just released a monograph for Dolce & Gabbana featuring Brazilian model Evandro Soldati entitled The Good Shepard, available at their boutiques. Fans of Soldati should be pleased, but PETA probably won't.
You may remember Soldati from his ads for Narciso Rodriguez fragrance "For Him"

Template for a Scent

Josh Hartnett's commercial for Diamonds by Emporio Armani fragrance debuted at the Milan's men's shows this week. It features a shirtless Hartnett slipping on a crisp white shirt and a swank outfit before being assaulted by the flashes of the paparazzi.
Which means it's pretty much the same commercial Matthew McConaughey did for Dolce & Gabbana's 'The One' fragrance back in February, in reverse.

Matthew McConaughey Won't Take His Shirt off for America

You may remember Matthew McConaughey's ad for Dolce & Gabbana's The One fragrance, which I posted back in February.
The Daily Mail reports that McConaughey insisted on shooting two ads, one with shirt and one without, to "preserve his modesty" in America:
"'Matthew didn't want to be bare-chested on billboards in America, although he doesn't seem to have a problem stripping off in his films,' says a source. He insisted on having his shirt on for the ad in the States, and off in the one for Europe and Asia.'"
Since when is Matthew McConaughey modest about his body? Haven't seen the one with his shirt on, but really, who wants to? Watch the European version, AFTER THE JUMP...

News: Richard Zednik, Obama Security, Taylor Kitsch, Hepatitis A
Jason Rae, the nation's youngest superdelegate who also happens to be gay and was heavily wooed by the Clinton camp, has decided to endorse Obama. Rae: "The Democratic Party is fortunate to have two very talented individuals running for President this election. It is a difficult choice for anyone, but in the end, the choice for me has become clear. I am proudly supporting Senator Barack Obama."

Madonna, Ashton Kutcher, Demi Moore, Eric Dane and others in Hepatitis A scare at trendy New York hotspot Socialista — told to get vaccinated immediately.
Friday Night Lights Taylor Kitsch the latest stud to join X-Men Origins : Wolverine starring Hugh Jackman.
Project Runway stars reunite, dish the dirt before season finale.
State College, Pennsylvania Mayor Bill Welch to preside at same-sex commitment ceremony of six gay and lesbian couples: "'All of them have been together for several years and are actively committed to their partners,' said [Tom] Koerber, co-director of the university Coalition of LGBTA Graduate Students. The coalition has scheduled the ceremony to coincide with the start of Pride Week, an annual week when gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students — along with straight allies — drum up pride in their community."

Bollywood actor Siddharth speaks out on playing gay roles: "I think we are a homophobic country and I believe the media’s insensitive sensationalisation of the issue is largely responsible for this. As an actor I play roles based on reality. Sexual orientation is a natural and personal choice. I see no reason for it to affect my decision to accept a project. I have close friends who are gay, and they are as intelligent and caring as, if not more than, my heterosexual friends. I think it’s time we started respecting them and giving them their much-deserved freedom to just be themselves."
Officers surprised by order to stop security screening in Dallas more than an hour before Obama took the stage: "The order to put down the metal detectors and stop checking purses and laptop bags came as a surprise to several Dallas police officers who said they believed it was a lapse in security. Dallas Deputy Police Chief T.W. Lawrence, head of the Police Department's homeland security and special operations divisions, said the order -- apparently made by the U.S. Secret Service -- was meant to speed up the long lines outside and fill the arena's vacant seats before Obama came on. 'Sure,' said Lawrence, when asked if he was concerned by the great number of people who had gotten into the building without being checked. But, he added, the turnout of more than 17,000 people seemed to be a 'friendly crowd.'"

Hockey player Richard Zednik, whose carotid artery as you may remember was ripped open by a skate blade, speaks to the media: "When I saw the blood, I knew I had to get up. I got to the trainers and said it's up to them now."
Dolce & Gabbana's new collection trashed by buyers: "If I was on a blind-date and a girl answered the door dressed like that, I'd say I was gay and looking for my boyfriend's apartment."
Miami Beach prepares for annual Winter Party: ''When the Task Force took over Winter Party, one of the missions was to make sure it was not just a [men's] circuit party but a series of events to reach out to . . . the entire spectrum of the community. Transgender people, LGBT [lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender] families and youth. We don't have a pride celebration in Miami. This is about the closest thing we have to it.''
29-year-old who stabbed gay man to death in public toilet in Britain appears in court: "Mr Akers, a retired accountant from Wallington, was found stabbed in public toilets in Walton Lane, just off Walton Bridge about 3pm on Tuesday. He died later in hospital. Mr Akers, from Wallington, had a male partner who he had been living with for 22 years. A postmortem examination held at the Royal Surrey County Hospital revealed the cause of death as a single stab wound to the back ."
27-year-old in Brazil ordered to pay fine of $8,500 for using 'fag' slur and throwing beer can at gay man: "It is the first time this fine is put into practice by the State since the creation of law nº 10.948 back in 2001."

News: Ferras, Facebook, Mariah Carey, The Nation, Polaroid
I had forgotten that AfterElton was doing a "Gay People's Choice Awards" contest but was extremely pleased to wake up this morning and find out that Towleroad won an award for favorite blog. Thanks to all of you who put in our name for this. It's much appreciated! Check out all the other winners HERE!

Facebook is the Hotel California. You can check out any time, but you can never leave. "Even if users terminate their membership, pictures of them posted by others remain online. But users can't really quit, anyway. Like guests at the Hotel California, people who check out of Facebook have a hard time leaving. Profiles of former members are preserved in case people want to reactivate their accounts. And all users' digital selves can outlive their creators. As the company's "terms of use" explain, profiles of deceased members are kept "active under a special memorialized status for a period of time determined by us to allow other users to post and view comments."

If you aren't aware of Ferras yet, you will be soon. His single "Hollywood is Not America" has been licensed by American Idol as the song that's played when the losers hit the road after they're voted off the show. "Bad Day" made Daniel Powter a household name when he was a relative unknown. NewNowNext interviews Ferras about his expectations for the future, and, of course, his love of the gays.

Can sugar substitutes make you fat? "Animals fed with artificially sweetened yogurt over a two-week period consumed more calories and gained more weight — mostly in the form of fat — than animals eating yogurt flavored with glucose, a natural, high-calorie sweetener."
Dolce & Gabbana's yummy new entree.

Digital Age: Polaroid exits film business. "Polaroid chief operating officer Tom Beaudoin said the company is interested in licensing its technology to an outside firm that could manufacture film for faithful Polaroid customers. If that doesn't happen, Polaroid users would have to find an alternative photo technology, as the company plans to make only enough film to last into next year. Polaroid has already quietly halted production of instant cameras. "We stopped making commercial-type cameras about 18 to 24 months ago, and we stopped making consumer cameras about a year ago," said Beaudoin."
John Barrowman's parents put him in a trash bin to shut him up.
The Nation endorses Barack Obama: "This magazine has been critical of the senator from Illinois for his closeness to Wall Street; his unwillingness to lay out an ambitious progressive agenda on health care, housing and other domestic policy issues; and for post partisan rhetoric that seems to ignore the manifest failure of conservatism over these past seven years. But as Christopher Hayes argued in our cover story last week, Obama has also exhibited a more humane and wise approach to foreign policy, opposing the Iraq War while Hillary Clinton voted for it, and has been a reliable progressive ally over the course of his career. While his rhetoric about "unity" can be troubling, it also embodies a savvy strategy to redefine the center of American politics and build a coalition by reaching out to independent and Republican voters disgruntled and disgusted with what the Bush era has wrought."

Valentino Spits on Dolce & Gabbana on the Way Out the Door

Valentino decided to let his fellow designers what they thought of them prior to the presentation of his final collection in Paris yesterday.
The Telegraph reports: "Valentino Garavani was reflecting on his 50-year career and on his rivals when he dismissed Dolce & Gabbana as 'shy to begin with, but now rather arrogant'. The 76-year-old added: 'The problem with young stylists is that they all want to be famous straight away and then they all do the same things.' Valentino’s comments appear to have touched a raw nerve, especially as he only had superlative praise for other Italian designers. He went on to describe Giorgio Armani as 'revolutionary', Miuccia Prada as 'stupefying' and Donatella Versace as 'gritty and determined'. In return, Mr Armani sent a vibrant red dress down his recent catwalk show in tribute to 'the genius of Valentino', who made red dresses his trademark. Stefano Gabbana, 46, one half of the label that now has an annual turnover of over £700 million, said: 'Valentino has been having goodbye parties since last July. I’ve been working. To be quite honest, I don’t care what Valentino says about us.'"
Gabbana also believes a child should not be raised by same-sex parents.
No word on what Valentino thought of Karl Lagerfeld, who handled the retiring designer with kid gloves at a ceremony later at the Hotel de Ville, where Valentino was awarded the Medal of Paris by gay mayor Bertrand Delanoe.

The members use pseudonyms because some gay servicemembers have been discharged for acknowledging their sexual orientation elsewhere online. Nearly 12,000 troops have been dismissed under the policy approved by President Clinton in 1993. Discharges peaked at 1,273 in 2001 and have fallen sharply since the war began. 'A lot of servicemembers are getting 'wink-wink' treatment from their commanders,' says Aaron Belkin, director of the Palm Center at the University of California, Santa Barbara, which studies the policy."

Stephen Cable of Rutland, the founder of the conservative group Vermont Renewal, said the formation of this traditional marriage council is in response to what he says is the pro-gay marriage leanings of the Vermont Commission on Family Recognition and Protection. 'After that, the council will open up the microphone to hear from Vermonters.'"

Fashion Notes: It's a Jungle Out There

From photographer Nick Knight and designer John Galliano come a tribe of ski-masked, underwear-clad "Gods and Monsters" in the latest issue of Arena Homme + which elaborate on the look model Chad White worked (or didn't work) on the runway in Paris in January. These fashion savages are much more successful in their presentation.

Dolce & Gabbana appear to think leopard is the "pre-fall" look, especially if you're planning to go watch Chad White spin around in a gyroscope.

And the New York Times takes a look at the phenomenon of novelty underwear: "...for decades the butt of jokes and the joke of butts, (novelty underwear) has, in the last two to three years, turned into a serious business, capturing a significant share of the $1.1 billion men’s knit-underwear (that is, excluding boxers) market. In all their goofy glory, briefs in bright colors, zany prints, new materials and daring cuts are undermining the classic white brief’s long-held status as king of the hill. In 2006, white’s share of the market dipped below 50 percent for the first time in decades, if not ever."

News: Helen Thomas, Cheney Lies, Christine Quinn, Ricky Martin
Utah's shameful anti-gay school club laws set to take effect: "Next month, a 17-page law will take effect governing just about every nuance of public school extracurricular clubs, from kindergarten jump rope to high school drama. How groups can form, what they can discuss in their meetings, who can join, and what a principal must do if rules are violated are addressed. But the school clubs law, signed last week by Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr., was not really intended to rein in the rowdies down at the audio-visual club, some lawmakers said. The real target was homosexuality. 'This is all about gay-straight alliance clubs, and anybody who tells you different is lying,' said State Senator Scott D. McCoy, Democrat from Salt Lake City, who voted against the law."

Despite the fact that Bush promised of Valerie Plame leak "I want to get to the bottom of this. If there is a leak out of my administration, I want to know who it is," a White House official revealed at hearings late last week that (surprise!) it was never investigated.
New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn makes St. Patty's Day statement in Dublin. Quinn: "The fact I'm here in Dublin and able to march and participate in inclusive events should send a message of how backwards the New York parade is. John Dunleavy obviously isn't interested in compromise. Last year he said allowing gays and lesbians into the parade would be the equivalent of letting the Ku Klux Klan march in a civil rights parade or the Nazis march in an Israeli Day parade. But he only represents a very small minority of people in the Ancient Order of Hibernians, so we eventually will get beyond this. The vast majority of AOH members, like the vast majority of Irish New Yorkers, are open-minded."
Riot strategy planned for Beckham games: "Police and LA Galaxy officials fear the arrival of Goldenballs could spark an invasion by English football hooligans."
Staten Island playwright presents Boys Just Wanna Have Fun about a NY cop who falls in love at a SI gay bar. Anthony Wilkinson: "Staten Island has a true reputation of being conservative and Republican and homophobic. Nobody who is gay in Manhattan, or even in Jersey, is going to run to Staten Island to spend the night in a gay bar. But as a whole Staten Island is very family-oriented, and that’s one of the positive things about it."

Decorated war veteran and Pennsylvania congressman Jack Murtha responds to Dick Cheney's assertion that a withdrawal from Iraq would result in chaos: "Why would I believe that? I mean, all the things that they have predicted have — everything I predicted turned out to be true. Nothing they predicted turned out to be true. Why would I believe there's going to be chaos in the Middle East just because they say it? The Iraqis don't believe that. The countries on the periphery don't believe that and the public doesn't believe it. The public wants us out. They spoke in the last election."

Domenico Dolce Prefers Delivery
Domenico Dolce, sans design partner Stefano Gabbana, was also recently spotted suntanning on South Beach, and Page Six reports he was busy at the clubs as well:
"Domenico Dolce does not pick up men - he has them selected and brought to him. The venerable designer - one half of the Dolce & Gabbana clothing empire - was at Miami hot spot Snatch the other night with several friends and one special employee whose assignment was 'to get hot guys in the club to go to his table,' giggled our spy. 'Domenico would point at a guy, and his employee would go bring the man over. It was extremely effective.'"

Stefano Gabbana: Same-Sex Parents Unfit to Raise Children
Stefano Gabbana (left), one half of the formerly-a-couple fashion duo Dolce & Gabbana, has told an Italian newspaper he wants a child with a woman because he believes a child should not be raised by same-sex parents:
"My dream is to have a baby, not to adopt one because I am not up to it and I don't feel strong enough. I want my own child, a biological child, the fruit of my sperm, conceived through artificial insemination because it wouldn't make sense for me to make love to a woman I don't love. The person I love today is my partner so I am looking for a civilised and refined woman. A week ago I asked a dear friend of mine, who is twelve years younger than me, if she would help. I asked her 'Would you like to be the mother of my child ?' She was left a bit shocked and the following day telephoned and said she was still shocked but thought it was a great idea. I am opposed to the idea of a child growing up with two gay parents. A child needs a mother and a father. I could not imagine my childhood without my mother. I also believe that it is cruel to take a baby away from its mother."
He also commented on his split from his designing partner Domenico Dolce:
"It was a real shock, a body blow. What surprises me is how we have overcome this traumatic breakup which is just the same for any couple if they are gay or hetero. We are still together because what we had was a great love story. I have a relationship with someone else know but Domenico will always be the most important person in my life. Intelligently we have managed to remain good friends and accomplices. Instead of the business splitting we have continued to work and will continue to work together. It's been difficult but we managed it."
