News: Sir Edmund Hillary, HIV, Paula Abdul, Emperor Hadrian
Man who sued over same-sex marriage question on Massachusetts bar exam apologizes: "I’m an Irish immigrant to this country. And you know, it’s hard to ignore the fact that all communities into America are first discriminated against and attacked before eventually being accepted. In hindsight I see the parallels in the discrimination that were once felt by the Irish in this country, and to a large degree it’s opening up my mind and my heart to want to stop the discrimination that the gay community is confronted with. Because you know it happens to all of us at one point or another; but we have a tendency to have collective amnesia and we forget about it."

Research team finds proteins that could be used to stop HIV: "A research team announced yesterday that it has identified about 270 human proteins that the AIDS virus apparently needs to infect a person, instantly providing researchers with dozens of new strategies for blocking or aborting HIV infection. The vast majority -- more than 200 -- were not previously known to play a role in the complicated choreography by which the virus attaches to a cell, enters it, gets copied and establishes permanent residence. The discovery was made with a technique called a 'genome-wide scan,' which is only a few years old. Current AIDS drugs work by interrupting one of four main steps in HIV's life cycle. The new study suggests that there are many more to target."

British Museum exhibit opens with major focus on Roman Emperor Hadrian's homosexuality: "His first move, within hours of coronation, was to withdraw his troops from Mesopotamia, now Iraq, and fortify the empire's boundaries by building his eponymous wall in northern England and others in the Danube and the Rhine valleys, ushering in a new era of peace. The reign that followed can be traced through 200 ancient treasures, many of which have never been display in Britain. Several of the artefacts relate to his male consort, Antinous, who accompanied him on his travels around the empire. These items include a poem written on papyrus, featuring the two men hunting together, and new finds that include memorials to the dead lover at Hadrian's villa in Tivoli. Although it was not uncommon for his predecessors to have taken gay lovers alongside a female spouse, Hadrian was unique in making his love "official" in a way that no other emperor had before him."

Gay Rapper Deadlee: Homophobic Eminem Picks Easy Targets

I've mentioned openly gay rapper Deadlee here before. Now, CNN's Ted Rowlands talks with Deadlee about his efforts to combat homophobia in Hip-Hop. Here's a bit:
Deadlee: "I think an artist actually has a responsibility too. There's a deal, like I said, that whole song with Eminem (with the lyrics that go) 'I hate fags? The answer's yes'? If he would have said that same thing, like, 'Do I hate blacks? The answer's yes', 'Do I hate Hispanics , the answer's yes', I think Eminem would be dead today. I think he's trying to pick on the people who he thinks are weak, and can't defend themselves. And I'm kind of stepping up to the game with all kinds of homorappers and saying, we're not weak, we can go head to head with you in the rap game, and even in a political stance, and say we're here. You can't be picking on us. It's so easy for peope to say 'I hate gays'. It's the one group of people that it's still okay to hate on."
Good for Deadlee. He's organized and is headlining the Homorevolution Tour 2007, beginning in March.

Rapper Deadlee Calls Out Homophobic Eminem, 50 Cent, and DMX
L.A.-based openly gay rapper Deadlee says he'll be headlining the first regional tour of gay and lesbian rap and Hip-Hop artists, called the Homorevolution Tour 2007, beginning in March.
Deadlee who says he is tired of the homophobic status quo present in rap and Hip-Hop, has called out some of his fellow rappers for their anti-gay language and homosexual tendencies in an interview with AllHipHop.com:
Says Deadlee: "Eminem was called out for his juvenile, hateful approach to homosexuality, especially in his song 'Criminal.' He was the biggest rapper at the time and if he used the same song as a diss to Blacks or Latinos, he would probably be dead. Eminem likes to pick on the 'weak' but gay[z] aint weak and he might be a f*g himself. He knew all the subcultures in that song.
Deadlee also comes down on DMX's references to "homo thugs" and constant use of fa**ot in his lyrics: "I find it crazy when his videos are very homoerotic. All the guys kicking it with their shirts off!"
He takes issue with rapper 50 Cent, who told Playboy in April 2004: I ain't into fa**ots. I don't like gay people around me, because I'm not comfortable with what their thoughts are. I'm not prejudiced. I just don't go with gay people and kick it - we don't have that much in common. I'd rather hang out with a straight dude. But women who like women, that's cool."
Says Deadlee: "F*ck him. I don't like ignorant b**ches around me, so he can suck my gun. He is a classic man who had Homo-feelings and chooses to lash out because he is afraid he might act out on his true feelings. 50 Cent has deep rooted homosexual tendencies."
Joining Deadlee on the Homorevolution Tour are gay and lesbian MCs Johnny Dangerous, Delacruz, Melange Lavonne, Salvimex, Bigg Nugg and JFP. The tour will hit ten cities in Southern California and the Southwest.

Eminem: Some Artists Grow, Others Simply Fester
Eminem is back with a new track called "No Apologies" in which he puts himself squarely in the latter category. A few choice lyrics:
"fuck yeah i'm a basketcase and i master this rap shit til' my ass gets wasted, til' my assassination, til' i'm slain cuz of some fag's infatuation..."
Wonder if Elton John has tired of his infatuation yet?
