Todd Haynes: Still a Feminino; Dispatches from LA & Brazil.
Still playing with dolls, superstar filmmaker Todd Haynes just won't play it safe. His self-spoof is not far from heaven. (Dan, thx for tip to Film Experience)
Brazilian Senator Magno Malta makes a televised speech against the proposed hate crimes legislation says, "allowing gays to manifest affection in public would be the equivalent
of giving pedophiles (or even necrophiles) a seal of approval." Made in Brazil has video and translates a few excerpts.
Sadly, AIDS walks have provided essential funding for so long that they have lost much of their energy and are part of the annual change in seasons. This Sunday's for AIDS Project Los Angeles has some renewed energy from a group started after last years walk by local nightlife producer Tom Whitman. The Gang of 100 is invite-only with the stated aim of trying to "engage an entire group of 25-45 year old guys and girls who aren't necessarily used to getting involved." Members each agree to raise $2000 for different charities and 100% of the proceeds from every even go to charity. I'm not sure about the the site's promise that if you see the Gang of 100 name on an invite "you will know that the event will be filled with fun, sexy, gregarious people that you will want to hang out with." but i am impressed that they're close to hitting their $100,000 goal for Sunday's walk. It could be the promised "half-time cocktail hour" (Disclosure: i just donated.)

On the Shortbus: Gay Filmmakers at Cannes

John Cameron Mitchell's steamy exploration of character through sexual behavior, Shortbus, is long on buzz. Mitchell: "I actually like pornography, but I don't consider this film pornographic. I define — and most people do — pornography as devoid of artistic intent. The purpose of pornography is to arouse. I don't think anyone got [sexually aroused] watching this film. There is a certain provocation we had in mind with this film, but more important than that, we wanted to use sex as a metaphor for things that were, perhaps, universal, themes like connection and love and fear. We just thought the language of sex could be used the way the language of music could be used in a musical."

As Elton John was presenting the Chopard Trophy to Transamerica's Kevin Zegers, a photographer interrupted and touched off Elton's short fuse: "If you saw 'Transamerica' ... I'm talking ... you fuckwit, fucking photographers you should be shot, you should be all shot. Thank you."
Ian McKellen says the Catholic church should welcome The Da Vinci Code: "I am only too happy to believe that Jesus was married. I know that the Catholic Church has problems with gay people and I thought this would be absolute proof that Jesus was not gay."

Pedro Almodóvar's Volver "has captured the hearts of everyone at Cannes": "I went into a light and very agreeable trance watching this movie, which Almodóvar unfolds with a master's confidence: its ingenuities and contrivances float out of the screen. The cinematography and art direction by José Luis Alcaine and Salvador Parra give everything a gorgeous intensity that has the look of a Douglas Sirk film - and Almodóvar has something of Sirk's passionate empathy with women, mixed with a playful, gay sensibility."

Superman: Just One Elbow Flex from Jazz Hands
Folks are saying all kinds of things about the new Superman Returns poster (click for larger versions) including the suggestive placement of a certain peninsula (though that's a bit of a stretch imho).
And the Advocate recently asked, How Gay is Superman? Well, The Hot Blog did a hysterical remix on the poster that proves just how gay he is...
However, the first thing that came to my mind when I saw it was another superhuman who could also stop speeding bullets named Neo.
And lo and behold, it does appear that both Brandon Routh and Keanu Reeves had the same hand coach who knew just the right moves to inject a little...drama.

Cary Grant & Randolph Scott's "Bachelor Hall" for Sale
The four-bedroom home that Cary Grant shared for many years with his "roommate" Randolph Scott is for sale at 2177 W. Live Oak Drive in the Los Feliz neighborhood of L.A. Grant also shared it with his first wife Virginia Cherrill. When she moved in, Scott was given the boot.
The house was dubbed "Bachelor Hall" after rampant rumors that Scott and Grant were involved caused red flags to go up at the studio. From Wikipedia:
"Biographers disagree on whether Grant was bisexual. While Marc Elliot, Charles Higham and Roy Moseley consider Grant to have been bisexual, with Higham and Moseley claiming that Grant and Scott were seen kissing in a public carpark outside a social function both were attending in the 1960s, Graham McCann dismisses the claims as rumors. In his book, Hollywood Gays, Boze Hadleigh cites an interview with gay director George Cukor who said about the alleged homosexual relationship between Scott and Grant: 'Oh, Cary won't talk about it. At most, he'll say they did some wonderful pictures together. But Randolph will admit it – to a friend.'"
They certainly look very cozy in the photo above. In any case, those of you wishing to bask by Grant's old pool should have a little cash to shell out. The asking price is a cool $3,995,000.

SPOILERS: Lost Turns Up the Heat
[SPOILER WARNING]

I have to say that last night's Lost contained among the most shocking and the hottest moments I've seen on the show so far. Holloway's Men's Health photos were the perfect prelude to this week's episode. More after the jump...
It's about time the show saw a little sex. All those stranded folks must be pretty horny. Did everyone's eyes perk up as Ana Lucia began ripping the shirt off Sawyer? Mine sure did.
And the bf throws out this theory:

Suddenly the December DWI arrests of Michelle Rodriguez and Cynthia Watros make sense. This is purely hypothetical, but imagine if you were killed off of one of the hottest shows on TV. The actresses probably went off drinking together to ease the pain, and unfortunately, made the bad judgment of getting behind the wheel. Make sense? I think so.

Superman Returns and Brandon Routh Flies

This appears to be the first clip of Brandon Routh in flight, from the upcoming Bryan Singer-directed Superman Returns. It's a clip from an Australian Coke commercial. I think in these close-ups Routh looks distinctly like a young Kyle McLachlan.

In the clip, Superman is flying over a freeway when the tail section of an airliner bursts into flame and breaks off. Superman must then save the beleaguered airliner.

(via brandonrouth.com)
Routh appeared at L.A. boutique Kitson yesterday, where a ton of new Superman swag went on sale.

No xtra large sequined codpieces though.

Australian Big Brother Star Opens Up About Gay Bashing
Australian Big Brother contestant David Graham, who last week outed himself on the show after one of the female contestants expressed an interest in him, has revealed he was brutally gay bashed earlier this year by a gang of five men outside a Brisbane nightclub:
"Before I knew it there were guys behind me and they were just beating the back of my head. All I can remember after that is the pain. They absolutely beat the s--- out of me. My mate said they just kicked me while I was on the ground until they thought I'd had enough or they were scared they had killed me. The assault left him with severe bruising across his face and body. My whole face was a mess of blood. I was taken to the hospital and was in and out of unconscious for two hours. If you've been bashed by five guys you would expect there to be some type of internal injuries or brain damage after the kicks I took to the head -- thank God there wasn't."
The revelation has reportedly strengthened the contestant's popularity among viewers of the show who vote to choose a winner. Australian oddsmakers have put Graham at the front of the pack.

Game On: Get Lost with Josh Holloway
More details have been released regarding the new interactive game The Lost Experience we posted about last Friday. The first clues for the international interactive game, which will follow a group of castaways not featured in the show, are set to be released in the upcoming week.
According to the New York Post, the clues will be revealed "May 2 during the program's broadcast on Britain's Channel 4, May 3 on ABC and May 4 on Australia's Seven Network. Singapore's Channel 5 and Star India are among the others participating." Said an ABC exec: "It's like a giant, mysterious jigsaw puzzle that will come to life for all the world to solve, whether you are a fan of the TV series or not."
And you know, all this gives us an excuse to show you these new shots of Josh Holloway from Men's Health. Although Sawyer may not be part of that interactive game, he certainly knows how to push our buttons.

United 93: Will You See It?

I'm just guessing this is the character of Mark Bingham, based on the Cal rugby shirt. Does anyone have any info on how Bingham is depicted in the movie? I wasn't planning on seeing it but based on just about every review I've read, the movie is extremely powerful. Last night it screened in New York:
"When the opening night film for De Niro’s Tribeca Film Festival ended, there weren’t just muffled tears or soft sobs but a loud, unnerving, heartbreaking keening, a howling in the darkened theater as United 93 ended with a black screen and notes on the day’s events. The sold-out crowd that exited was the most somber, silent group anyone could imagine."
Bingham's aunt, Candyce Hoglan, was at the Tribeca screening. Her reaction to the film? "Excruciating. I stood on the side in case I had to bolt, but I didn’t. It’s not a feel-good movie, but if we need any reminder of how important airline security is, this is it."
Has anyone seen it? Too soon for this movie? Will there ever be a right time? Thoughts?

Entertainers: Too Gay, Not Gay, Not Gay Enough
One of these men says he's too gay, one says he's not gay, and one says he's not gay enough. My guess is you can figure out who said what. Answers after the jump...

Graham Norton says in a new documentary that he's sick of producers who tell him to pile on the flamboyance: "I am surrounded with scores of straight producers making sure I am as gay this week as I was last week." For Norton's next gig, he'll host a reality show called How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria? in which contestants vie for a chance to star as Maria in an upcoming West End production of The Sound of Music. For which I'm sure he'll be asked to be absolutely butch.
Robin Williams says he's not gay and wants to meet all the men who say they've slept with him: "There are many websites that will go, 'Oh, he is gay - I know he is gay.' Even our chef, who is gay, was at a gay ski lodge, and some guy came up to him and said, 'Robin Williams is gay. Oh, I know he is. I know people who have been with him.' They should tell me, because I don't remember." For the record, I've never thought Williams was gay, but I am looking forward to his upcoming role as a gay late night radio host in Armistead Maupin's The Night Listener.
Ian McKellen wishes there had been a homoerotic subplot for his character Magneto in the forthcoming X-Men — The Last Stand: "He hasn't been given a love line, which I think is a pity. It would be wonderful if the camera hovered over Magneto's bed, to discover him making love to Professor X."

Larry Miller Meets with Gay and Lesbian Students
Wow. Now this is great to see. Real dialog between a bigot and those affected by his actions.
Larry Miller, the Utah theater owner who pulled Brokeback Mountain from his theaters last January, met with about 30 gay and lesbian students at the University of Utah who enlightened him about what it's like to be gay. According to the Salt Lake Tribune, students told Miller about the difficulties of coming out and the fear of being physically harmed. The discussion appeared to change Miller's previously unwavering stance on his decision to pull the movie.
Said Miller: "Now, I understand how something I said inadvertently made them feel demeaned as individuals. Maybe their well-being trumps my beliefs, my rights to express myself...In 2006, it's wrong that they have to live in that fear."
Students were very positive about the meeting. Charles Milne, coordinator of the university's LGBT Campus Resource Center: "I felt like he cared about what we had to say. I wouldn't say we changed his mind, but I think he did come away with ideas he had to process."
Imagine the strides that could be made if this kind of exchange happened more often.

Tony Soprano and Rick Sanitorium

There was a ton of dialog the other night on the Sopranos which related to the discovery of Vito Spatafore at a gay club. I found it fascinating to see extended conversation from a group of bigoted mobsters about what to do about the situation. It culminated in a scene featuring Tony Soprano at his shrink Dr. Melfi's office, wondering how to deal with it. The show's writers managed to get in a dig here at anti-gay Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum, or "Sanitorium" as Tony mistakenly refers to him.
Calls to Santorum's office from CentreDaily.com received this response from Santorum's gay director of communications: "We're not gonna dignify that comment by commenting on it."

Matt Dillon in Details
Matt Dillon is still sexy after 27 years in acting, although the cover shot Details gives him this month is decidedly unflattering. Jeff Johnson starts his interview of the actor off with an arresting image: "I wrapped a towel around my bloody cock," Matt Dillon says, "and called the doctor." Turns out it's just a cock tease after all (a line from Dillon's latest film), but it's certainly the most head-turning interview answer I've heard since "I’m going to eat the cord and the placenta right there."

A Look Back at Brokeback by Andrew Holleran
Better late than never, I guess. My eyes always perk up whenever I see an article penned by Andrew Holleran, author of one of the breathtaking seminal gay novels, Dancer from the Dance. This month's Gay & Lesbian Review presents an essay about Brokeback Mountain
that, were it not written by Holleran, I'd most surely have glossed over. Here's an excerpt from Holleran's meditation on the cowboy tale:
"The longing of Jack and Ennis for one another, though set in the early 1960’s, seems to unfold in its own little world—the way love does, actually. I suppose, had Ennis and Jack been allowed to live together, or grow old, their romance would have devolved into arguments over dish washing, channel changing, drinking, and depression. Maybe they would have moved to San Francisco, or started doing threesomes. But in this movie they do not. Their love lives on after you leave the theater because it was never obtained. (There is at the end one crushing revelation that Jack had transferred his dream of running his folks’ ranch with Ennis to a man in Texas; that news is just one more tiny nail in the coffin of Ennis’ loss.) Yet it’s this that makes Brokeback so moving: it’s a never-resolved argument between two men, one who wishes to live freely with the person he loves, and one who believes society will not let them, having witnessed something as a child that instilled that message in him in a fearful way."
Fans of Holleran or Brokeback will find the long essay worth the read.

Colin Farrell's New World: The Stench of Man

Audiences in Japan will be offered a new dimension to their movie-viewing experience when Terrence Malick's The New World starring Colin Farrell opens in Tokyo this month — Smellovision!
"N-T-T says a floral scent accompanies a love scene, while a mix of peppermint and rosemary is emitted during a tear-jerking scene. Joy is a citrus mix of orange and grapefruit, while anger is enhanced by a herb-like concoction with a hint of eucalyptus and tea tree."
And because Axe deodorant or proper toilets weren't available in John Smith's time, the remaining smells will be feet, pits, and ass.

Rep: Jake Gyllenhaal & Austin Nichols Not a Gay Couple

You may have seen this series of photos of Jake Gyllenhaal and Austin Nichols at a Lakers game that surfaced a while ago and led to rampant speculation on the nature of their relationship. Well, the Brokeback-fueled hysteria has finally culminated in a statement from Jake's rep:
"Gay fans of Jake Gyllenhaal are determined to claim the "Brokeback Mountain" star as their own. Blogosphere gossips have been claiming that Gyllenhaal was ready to admit he was having trouble quitting actor Austin Nichols, whom he has known since high school. But sorry, guys, there won't be any coming-out party. Even though Jake is now split with Kirsten Dunst and Nichols broke off his engagement to Claire Oswalt, Gyllenhaal's rep says he and Nichols are just friends."
Nothing like a good denial to keep the ball rolling.

Gay Storyline Gets Boost in The Sopranos

[Spoiler Warning] The Sopranos took its first visit to a gay bar last night. But first how about a tribute to the fresh eye candy? It debuted in the form of Tony Soprano's new driver/bodyguard whose muscles, macho sensibility, and gofer status provide a perfect foil for Tony's need to show that he's still the alpha male he used to be.
Here's a short piece on Louis Gross, the 23-year-old fitness model turned actor: "The acting side of the business is where the longevity is. I didn't want to just be another flash in the pan, in and out type of model." We hope he sticks around for the season.

The show makes a return to the storyline of Vito Spatafore, last seen giving a blow job on a construction site last season. Joseph Gannascoli, the heterosexual actor, talked to the New York Daily News in March about the character and his prior relationship with the gay community. He pops up this time in a gay club, in full leather.

Unfortunately, he's spotted by two mobsters who have come there to extort protection money from a bartender.

"It's a joke," Vito says, realizing they don't believe it for a second, before pleading, "Don't say nothin'!"

So what's to happen to Vito? We next see him alone in a motel room with a gun. Presumably he'd rather face his death alone than have to deal with the shame of having his story known.

Gannascoli gave the idea for the gay character to the Sopranos producers: "I saw him as, like, a cross between Mike Tyson and Liberace. I wanted to make him sort of in self-denial, self-loathing, a real gay hater. I thought that was a way of separating myself from the other actors, because I would have been in the background most of the time. You know, line here, line there, and nothing really substantial."
Let's hope Gannascoli and Gross are around for a few more episodes.

Almodovar Exhibit Opens in Paris
A new exhibit on filmmaker Pedro Almodovar opened in Paris at the Cinematique Francais yesterday. Included are photos and personal objects including cameras, childhood items, and a recreation of Almodovar's own bedroom. Bedrooms are often featured prominently in Almodovar's movies (my favorite being the sexy Law of Desire starring a young, gorgeous Antonio Banderas, below), thus the refence.
Said a humbled Almodovar of the exhibition: "Imagine opening a dooring and entering a limitless place, a small city in which the streets, the buildings, everything seen through the windows is made up of images of your life. It's very difficult for me to enter such a place."
The exhibition runs until the end of July.

And.........Scene!
Tom Gregory, the man who spent more than $100,000 on the shirts from Brokeback Mountain, recently bought the postcards that are pictured in the film's final scene for an undisclosed sum. Gregory contacted Brokeback's propmaster Ken Wills with the intent to reunite the famous props. He also made an additional donation to Variety Children's Charity (the group benefitting from the sale of the shirts) for $10,000.
Said Gregory: "The shirts and the postcards are together again. They are more than simply props, they are symbolic of a great love and a remarkable film."
The shirts and postcards (which are being mounted on wood) will be on display at the GLAAD awards in Los Angeles this Saturday, April 8th.
Now if Gregory can just obtain Heath Ledger, the window, curtain, wardrobe, and a bucolic western landscape he'll have the entire scene.
ADDENDUM: I've just confirmed that Gregory bought a total of five postcards, four of which were used in the film, including the ones sent as mail (the postcard by which Ennis finds out Jack is "Deceased" and also the one that comes before the first visit).

Daniel Craig: Gays on Board with New Bond

The choice of Daniel Craig has inspired much criticism from die-hard Bond fans, but the actor has said he'll take the sexually adventurous 007 to new places in the upcoming Casino Royale if need be. Last month he told the UK's Daily Mirror, "In today's world we expect female actresses to go naked so why not men? I have told bosses I'm prepared to do a full frontal scene. I'm not shy and Bond wouldn't be shy about it either."
Perhaps his willingness to go full frontal is what has inspired gay men to flock to the next 007.
Said Craig recently: "I was out recently and all these gay guys were over me like a rash, but they never ask about the Bond plot."
A rash? That's not a very pleasant comparison, but maybe that's why he's fingering his thunderballs.

Spawn of Hedwig by Spawn of the 60's

John Cameron Mitchell's Hedwig and the Angry Inch has been revived at the Roxy Theater in L.A. and appears to be getting great reviews. Interesting to note is that the revival features Donovan Leitch, son of 60's folk pop singer Donovan, and Bijou Phillips, daughter of Mama's and Papa's singer John Phillips. The L.A. Times calls Leitch's performance a "tour de force" and says Bijou's "energies are on the money."

Larry Miller Proud He Made Money Off Bigotry

For the first time since he refused to screen Brokeback Mountain at his Utah theater chain, Larry Miller is speaking about his controversial decision, but before he apologizes to anyone, he needs to brag about all the people that bought cars from him because of it:
"I had 12 people call and say I bought a car from you today, 'because', and then 27 the next day and then 12 the 3rd day."
Wow. It must have been the right decision then. Good for the greedy bastard.
He offers this reason for pulling the film:
"Getting away from the traditional families, which I look at as the fundamental building block of our society, is a very dangerous thing."
Perhaps if Miller had seen the film he might have realized that the same bigotry he practices is what drove the characters of Jack and Ennis into "traditional" marriages that were ultimately far more damaging to the families involved than what might have taken their place in a tolerant and accepting society.

The Amazing Race's Eric and Jeremy Party On

Eric and Jeremy on this season's Amazing Race have painted themselves as hetero playboys eager to swap spit with their running mates Dani and Danielle. Today, however, these festive photos surfaced which show the duo partying with the "hippie" team BJ and Tyler.
So is this how straight boys party? Hmm. Maybe it was just one of those "fishing trips".
