Rachel Maddow: Obama's Inaugural 'Stonewall' Shout-Out was for the Supreme Court - VIDEO

Rachel_maddow

Last night, Rachel Maddow and Frank Rich hashed out Obama's Stonewall reference:

We, the people, declare today that the most evident of truths – that all of us are created equal – is the star that guides us still; just as it guided our forebears through Seneca Falls, and Selma, and Stonewall; just as it guided all those men and women, sung and unsung, who left footprints along this great Mall, to hear a preacher say that we cannot walk alone; to hear a King proclaim that our individual freedom is inextricably bound to the freedom of every soul on Earth.

Maddow theorizes that it was a shout-out to the Supreme Court, preemptive of its decision on DOMA and Prop 8. And Rich believes it was specifically for Chief Justice John Roberts.

Rachel Maddow Wonders Why the Freak-Out Over Akin When Paul Ryan Supports the Same Policies? -VIDEO

Maddow

Frank Rich joins Rachel Maddow to discuss rape victims' rights and the transition of extremism regarding women's rights to the Republican mainstream with the selection of Paul Ryan as Mitt Romney's running mate.

"Why the freak-out about Todd Akin when the Republican Party has picked someone with the exact same track record, the exact same policy record, his co-sponsor on all of these bills, to be the party's vice presidential nominee?"

Yet another thorough analysis from Rachel.

Should Mitt Romney's Bullying Past Be Campaign Issue?

MittYoungJournalist Frank Rich addressed a wide array of LGBT-related comments in his latest New York magazine piece, including whether or not Mitt Romney's past as an anti-gay bully will bring him down in the polls and whether addressing it is "fair game."

What is fair game is his strange, chuckling denial of any knowledge of a fairly violent prank that other participants and eyewitnesses remember so vividly. If no other similar incidents turn up, that will be the end of it. How big an “if” that is, I don’t know.

Much of Romney’s past remains a mystery to me, as it does to most Americans. Meanwhile Sondheim aficionados can savor a musical recounting of the bullying incident, “Romney Mitt, the Demon Barber of Wall Street."

I've included video of Roy Zimmerman singing that very song, AFTER THE JUMP.

As for whether President Obama's gay marriage support will cost him votes, Rich is doubtful: "In political terms, I’d say Obama’s move is either a wash or a plus. In the long-term perspective of history, his endorsement of marriage equality is a big plus."

Rachel Maddow Talks to Frank Rich About the Silent Hypocrisy of Pro-Gay Republican Power Players: VIDEO

Rich_maddow

Frank Rich sat down with Rachel Maddow last night to discuss why pro-gay Republican power players like Paul Singer and Dick Cheney (rumored to have lobbied behind the scenes for marraige equality in Maryland) - and gay Republicans like Ken Mehlman refuse to speak out and condemn the radical anti-gay platform of every single GOP candidate for President.

RichSays Rich:

"There's a complete disconnect. I guess it's just a kind of desperate, craven relationship to the base of that party. We now have a base of the Republican party that is so radical that they can be pandered to by calls for elimination of public education...the hypocrisy...someone like Ken Mehlman is in a long tradition, I hate to say it, of Republicans who were closeted homosexuals in power, actually enabling homophobic policies and in some cases the real demonization of gay people. And then as soon as they're away from it...then he comes out and does the right thing. Comes out as gay, but also comes out of those policies. But where was he when it really mattered within his own party?...There's a real pathological disconnect and they've really got to be called on it."
