Yelling that the men — a couple in their 20s, according to prosecutors — were 'dirty nasty people' and other things not fit to print in this publication, Santos-Coy allegedly struck one of the men several times in the face. He then picked up a wrought-iron table and swung it at the victims, prosecutors said. The men managed to avoid getting hit by the heavy table, according to prosecutors...He faces up to eight years in prison for two felony counts of a hate crime and one count of assault with a hate crime purpose."

"Ex-Gay" Bar? UK former gay bar under inquiry for putting up banner announcing that it is "now straight". "A police inquiry is under way into a complaint that the sign, which has now been taken down, was offensive. The bar owners said it was never their intention to offend. Change of Heart Bears Fruit for Once-Biased Scottsdale Bar Owners

Last December I posted about Scottsdale bar owner Tom Anderson's decision to convert his bar Anderson's Fifth Estate to a bar that serves the gay community after making headlines in 2006 when he banned a transgender woman following complaints she was using the women's bathroom.
In December, Anderson said he had decided he wanted to "change Scottsdale" after a number of high-profile anti-gay hate incidents there. He also saw a need in the nightlife community for a new gay venue.
Anderson's decision seems to have paid off. The club, which now has lines it never saw before, was lauded in the Arizona Republic over the weekend, and tells the story of Anderson's transformation after the unfortunate 2006 incident:
"For more than a year afterward, Anderson was the subject of dozens of newspaper and television stories pitting him against the GLBT community and its allies. He became known as the club owner who kicked out a transgendered woman. This happened as people were questioning whether Scottsdale was becoming hostile toward the GLBT community, after a gay couple was assaulted outside a restaurant and after Mayor Mary Manross refused to observe GLBT month in June, instead, proclaiming it to be Human Relations Diversity Observance month. Anderson, who owns the club with his wife, Roberta, resolved the dispute in November 2007 by building a gender-neutral restroom. Anderson said that during the controversy over the discrimination complaint he met with members of the GLBT community. One of the things he learned was how underserved the community was in Scottsdale, with only one bar, BS West, in the area. Anderson said he saw both a business opportunity and a chance to be part of a community he'd come to know and enjoy. The Andersons reopened the club as Forbidden in December, a month after the resolution. The 5,500-square foot club can hold 325 people and is open five days a week, up from three when it was Anderson's Fifth Estate. Now, more than 700 people come through on Fridays and Saturdays each, more than double what Fridays used to draw."

Canadian Woman Settles Complaint with Montreal Gay Bar
You may remember in May of last year I posted about Audrey Vachon, a Canadian woman who filed a complaint after being thrown out of Montreal's Le Stud bar because it has a "men only" policy.
The Canadian Press reports that the bar and Vachon have settled the discrimination complaint: "Bar Le Stud and Audrey Vachon, the 21-year-old woman who launched the complaint, agreed to keep the terms of the settlement confidential. Quebec's human rights commission says businesses have the right to attract a particular clientele but not to discriminate by excluding other customers. Vachon sat down at the bar with her father for an afternoon beer a year ago when staff told them women were not allowed. Le Stud owner Michel Gadoury said at the time women had been banned most nights since the bar opened 11 years ago."

Castro Street to Undergo "Time Warp" for Milk Biopic

Filming begins later this month on Gus van Sant's Milk film about slain SF supervisor and gay rights activist Harvey Milk (starring Sean Penn as Milk, with Emile Hirsch, Josh Brolin, and James Franco in co-starring roles), and preparations are fully underway to begin shooting on location in San Francisco's Castro district:
"Longtime denizens are likely to find some old haunts return to Castro Street, like the fabled Toad Hall bar – now part of Walgreens – and Milk's old camera shop – now the home of gift store Given – as the filmmakers recreate the streetscape from the days when Milk reigned over the area as the 'mayor' of Castro Street. 'We want to dress this neighborhood the best we can like the 1970s,' said Jonathan Shedd, the film's location manager. 'We hope to create a feel that works.' Cars from the era will be parked on the streets. Awnings and street signs of businesses postdating that time will be changed. Even the Castro Theatre will be swept up by the time warp. The movie-house's marquee, damaged by a Muni bus that ran into it while PG&E crews were doing work out front this fall, will be repaired next month and repainted to match the color palette it sported four decades ago."
The filmmakers have been meeting with local business owners to alert them of the "circus" that may prevail when shooting begins there on January 22, although the consensus appears to be that exposure from the film is likely to revitalize the area's businesses and make it a tourist destination.
The images you see here are from Uncle Donald's Castro Street, the most complete historical archive of the neighborhood online. If you haven't been there, it's a fascinating visit.
Top image by Jerry Pritikin, who has his own gallery at Uncle Donald's site. Pritikin writes: "A view of the 1977 Castro Street Fair, looking South from Market Street. This was the old style Castro Fair, nothing but two blocks of wall to wall men!"

Julius, One of New York's Oldest Gay Bars, is Shuttered

In a 2002 issue of New York magazine, Edmund White wrote of the West Village gay bar Julius: "Of course, for me, the Ur–classic gay bar was Julius in the Village, which I first visited in the mid-sixties. Mayor Wagner was closing gay bars as fast as they could open to clean up New York for the World’s Fair. If he left Julius open, it was only because it was well-lit and had a few conspicuous women. There was even a period when we weren’t allowed to face the bar but had to stand absurdly with our back to it to prove, I suppose, that we had nothing to hide."
It has been around since the Stonewall era, but this week the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance seized the longstanding bar, about which Gawker disagreed with White, calling it "the worst and most amazing craphole bar in New York City, a place of such filth that one was reluctant to touch even a bottle of beer."

Brad Pitt and George Clooney Asked to Help Save Laguna Gay Bar

Efforts to save the cornerstone of Laguna Beach's gay nightlife, the historic Boom Boom Room and Coast Inn hotel, have officially gone Hollywood.
Activist Fred Karger, who has spearheaded the efforts to keep the property preserved for the coastal town's gay community, has taken out an ad in Daily Variety with Laguna Beach Mayor Bob Gentry.
The ad appeals to Brad Pitt and George Clooney, once thought to be interested in buying the property, to help save it.
Said the ad: "Now we are appealing to both of you to buy our 60-year-old landmark before it is converted into a boutique hotel...Both of you are true leaders in human and civil rights. Over 100 years of gay history that the Boom represents is a stake in Laguna Beach."
According to CBS, "The Boom Boom Room is reportedly the oldest continuously operating gay bar in the United States, and keeping it would be preserving the history of the community, Karger said. Once the haunt of celebrities such as Rock Hudson and Paul Lynde, the Boom Boom Room was slated to close as early as last fall, but activists have fought against it...The origins of the Boom Boom Room date to the late 1920s, when Carolyn Burris, granddaughter of the owner of the Coast Inn, persuaded John "Pappy" Smith to open a tropical-themed bar called the Seven Seas. The Seven Seas became frequented by families and the military. The name Boom Boom Room, according to Burris, came from sailors and Marines who used the term as slang for sex. The Smith family sold the bar to Sidney Bryant in the mid-1970s, and it quickly became a gathering place for gays."
Efforts to save the Boom Boom Room have been underway since June 2006 when it was purchased by Steven F. Udvar-Hazy. After collecting approximately 6,000 signatures from area residents and supporters, the property was saved last August when Udvar-Hazy offered a one-year lease. That lease comes up in September.
Said Karger of the Variety ad: “When we first found out that our landmark bar was about to close, we got organized and decided to fight its closure. The landmark Boom Boom Room was set to close last Labor Day (2006), but Mr. Udvar-Hazy was very helpful and gave us a one year reprieve. With Labor Day 2007 rapidly approaching, we figured we’d see if these great stars would come help the gay community down here in Laguna.”
Added Mayor Gentry: "The Gay Community of Laguna Beach is being thrown out into the Pacific Ocean and we are looking for some help from our friends. We have been talking to lots of potential buyers over the past several months and we thought we would try this bold approach to appeal to these thoughtful and caring stars."
In January, a nearby gay-owned restaurant, Woody's, was sold, further eating away at Laguna Beach's gay nightlife.
Though it may be a longshot in terms of actual success with the Pitt/Clooney team, the ad has certainly already generated enough publicity to draw other potential buyers to the rescue.

Dallas-Area Gay Bar Mable Peabody's Destroyed in Arson Blaze

Intruders vandalized, robbed, and set Mable Peabody's Beauty Parlor and Chainsaw Repair ablaze in Denton, Texas early Wednesday, destroying it. The gay bar has been around for decades, reports the Dallas Morning News:
"Margaret Honeycutt opened the club 27 years ago, Ms. Sanders said. Back then, she said, it was a brave move to open a club for gay men and women. Ms. Sanders said she has had no trouble and has no idea who might have set the fires. Ms. Sanders said that when she bought the club, she came up with the unusual name with the help of "a lot of wine." She wants to reopen, she said, but it's too soon to know what she will do. 'I think I lost my identity along with my business,' she said."
Sanders, who has owned Mable Peabody's for 13 years, says she has no idea why the club was targeted: "They broke in and took liquor and threw chairs all over the place. They destroyed the whole bar before they burned it. I wonder if it could have been a gay-bashing deal. I have no idea."
