Christopher Peloso, Husband Of Veteran Toronto Politician George Smitherman, Found Dead

FbookChristopher Peloso (pictured right), husband of veteran Canadian politician George Smitherman, was found dead Sunday, according to The Toronto Star. Peloso, who disappeared this past September and was feared dead, but was luckily found alive albeit "dirty and confused" next to some train tracks. Police have yet to release the circumstances surrounding Peloso's death but suicide is suspected to be the cause of death. Peloso was a longtime sufferer of depression. According to a statement released by George Smitherman on Twitter earlier:

“We will celebrate his life and we will find comfort somehow in knowing that he has found peace from the depression that has wreaked havoc on his mind. A son and brother, a husband and father of 3 he will always be remembered for his dedication to others.”

Smitherman was previously the Ontario health minister and a candidate for Mayor in 2010 against current embattled incumbent Rob Ford. 

Condolences from fellow politicians immediately began to pour in once news of Peloso's death surfaced. 

Premier Kathleen Wynne choked back tears when she spoke about Peloso’s death.

“It’s a very, very sad day for George and his family and Christopher Peloso’s family,” she told reporters Monday...

Standing beside her own same sex partner Jane Rounthwaite, Wynne said they both knew Peloso, describing him as a “kind, gentle, loving man.”

“He will be hugely missed and my thoughts and love are with George and the kids . . . it’s just a very, very sad day for the family.”

Mayor Ford also released a statement Monday expressing his condolences:

“It is with great sadness that I have learned of the passing of Mr. Christopher Peloso, husband to Mr. George Smitherman, and loving father,” he said. “I would ask all Torontonians to extend their condolences to the family during this difficult time.”

Peloso, who was previously married to a woman and had a daughter from that union, was also the father of two adopted children he parented with Smitherman.

This morning, Towleroad reported that Christopher Peloso, the husband of Toronto mayoral candidate and former Ontario health minister George Smitherman and the father of their two children, had been missing since Monday afternoon.

PelosoHe has been found alive near train tracks in West Toronto, the National Post reports:

Constable Wendy Drummond confirmed that Mr. Peloso has been found near Dupont and Lansdowne, “conscious and breathing.”

“That’s all we’ve got at this point,” said Const. Drummond.

Earlier on Tuesday, an extensive search was underway near the intersection after police triangulated the last known location of Peloso’s cell phone. The ground search, along the railway line behind a GE plant, included police officers from 13 Division and a canine unit.

No further details were disclosed.

Smitherman tweeted: "Thanks to @TorontoPolice, Christopher is alive+ safely in the hands of TO Western Hospital. Love&Thank you to all. George, Michael and Kayla"

Gay Toronto Mayoral Candidate George Smitherman's Husband Reported Missing


Toronto police are asking the public for assistance in the search for Christopher Peloso, the husband of Toronto mayoral candidate George Smitherman, who was last seen Monday afternoon in the area of Davenport Road and Bathurst Street.

PelosoAs Towleroad readers may recall, Smitherman married Peloso six years ago, when he was the first openly gay member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) and the first openly gay cabinet minister. In 2010 they were approved to adopt a boy. They have since adopted another girl.

Wrote Smitherman on Facebook: "I regret to confirm that Christopher Peloso has been missing from our home for almost 24 hours. Michael, Kayla and myself, with the support of family and friends, are hopeful that our husband and father will be home safely soon."

Wrote the Toronto Police in a release:

The Toronto Police Service is seeking the public's assistance locating a missing man.

Christopher Peloso, 39, was last seen on Monday, September 9, 2013, at 4 p.m., in the Davenport Road/Bathurst Street area.

He is described as white, 5'8", 150 lbs., with brown eyes and short, light-brown hair. He was wearing a dark-blue jacket with a hood, tan-coloured cargo shorts, and blue flip-flops.

Police are concerned for his safety.

Gay Toronto Mayoral Candidate and Husband Approved to Adopt

Gay Toronto mayoral candidate George Smitherman and his husband Christopher Peloso have been approved to adopt a 14-month-old boy, the Toronto Star reports:

Smitherman  "No other details on the boy have been released. 'Christopher and I are very proud to share the news,' Smitherman said in a statement Sunday. 'Despite our overwhelming joy at the prospect of being parents to a beautiful baby boy, we must ask for your complete cooperation in respecting our privacy and the important legal process that governs our potential adoption.' Smitherman stressed that under Ontario law, adoption is not finalized until the completion of a 'carefully planned process.' The process allows prospective parents to begin a relationship with the child and will take at least six months. 'Until that time, our adoption is not official,' Smitherman said. 'I look forward to sharing more details when I am able.' Smitherman is Ontario's first openly gay MPP and married businessman Peloso in 2007, 13 years after the pair met and two years after they began dating. Nicknamed 'Furious George' for his aggressive political style, Smitherman has served as Ontario's deputy premier, health minister and energy minister before resigning in November to run for mayor."

Deputy Premier of Ontario George Smitherman, who is the first openly gay Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) in Ontario, Canada and the first openly gay cabinet minister, married his partner Christopher Peloso in a ceremony over the weekend.

SmithermanThe Toronto Star reports: "Smitherman, who as provincial health minister is a senior member of cabinet and often mentioned on the shortlist of future candidates for mayor of Toronto, acknowledged that such a public pronouncement of love would have political overtones. 'We haven't sought to make it political. It happens to be who I am and what I've done for almost my entire adult life so it's no surprise that it is going to have some political elements to it,' Smitherman said. 'It was going to make a statement wherever it was. Christopher's a northern boy (from Sudbury) so it's pretty appropriate we do it here,' he added. The guests were mostly extended family (four generations from both sides) with only three area politicians invited, as well as human rights lawyer Doug Elliott, a long-time friend, and former Toronto mayor Barbara Hall who made the wedding cake, along with 200 individual cupcakes."

Smitherman became engaged to Peloso, whom he met in 1994 but didn't date until two years ago, last February.
