Gay Corrections Officer Gets Permission to March in Pride Parade

Allred

Following yesterday's press conference led by attorney Gloria Allred, a gay corrections officer from Chino, California whose department said that marching in West Hollywood's Gay Pride parade in uniform would "discredit" the agency, will now be allowed to march after an abrupt change of tune by the department, TMZ reports:

The Department now says, "CDCR acknowledges that [its policy] is outdated and requires careful revision. Therefore, Correctional Officer Andrew Johnson will be allowed to wear the CDCR uniform in the upcoming Gay Pride Parade..."

Allred had filed a complaint with the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing, alleging discrimination based on sexual orientation.

Atlanta Braves Coach Apologizes for Homophobic Remarks

Atlanta Braves pitching coach Roger McDowell issued a statement following yesterday's news conference by attorney Gloria Allred and a father accusing McDowell of using anti-gay slurs and gestures at a recent game.

Mcdowell Said McDowell: “I am deeply sorry that I responded to the heckling fans in San Francisco on Saturday. I apologize to everyone for my actions."

TMZ reported that in addition to asking a group of male fans "Are you a homo couple or a threesome?," McDowell made anti-gay gestures:

Mega-attorney Gloria Allred announced the allegations moments ago in a news conference -- representing a family of four (including two 9-year-old girls) who claim they watched McDowell make the homophobic remark and then use a baseball bat to simulate gay sex.

According to Allred, the family claims they also witnessed McDowell tell the group of male fans, "Are you three giving it to each other in the a**?"

Allred demonstrated with the bat. Watch, AFTER THE JUMP...

The Braves are investigating

Commissioner Bud Selig called the allegations “very troubling” and said in a statement Wednesday evening he will determine how to proceed after the Braves complete their investigation and report to him.

The Braves expressed their concern about the allegations in a statement Wednesday “and the behavior described by a witness today. This in no way represents the Braves organization and the conduct we expect of our employees. We will withhold further comments until we finish gathering information.”

Said GLAAD President Jarrett Barrios in response to the accusations: “McDowell’s apology is a start, but the Atlanta Braves and Major League Baseball must take real disciplinary action and send the message that anti-gay slurs have no place in sports. Professional sporting events should be an environment that all fans and families can enjoy, not a place where children are exposed to violent threats and discriminatory language.”

Atlanta Braves Coach Accused of Anti-Gay Slurs, Gestures

Bat

At a press conference carried by TMZ this afternoon, a father accused Atlanta Braves pitching coach Roger McDowell of using anti-gay slurs and gestures in front of his family, which included his two 9-year-old girls. The girls were also present at the presser.

Mcdowell According to the father, McDowell asked a group of male fans, "Are you a homo couple or a threesome?"

TMZ adds:

Mega-attorney Gloria Allred announced the allegations moments ago in a news conference -- representing a family of four (including two 9-year-old girls) who claim they watched McDowell make the homophobic remark and then use a baseball bat to simulate gay sex.

According to Allred, the family claims they also witnessed McDowell tell the group of male fans, "Are you three giving it to each other in the a**?"

The father claims he confronted McDowell from the stands -- and McDowell responded by saying, "Kids don't f**king belong at the baseball park" ... and then approached him with a baseball bat, saying, "How much are your teeth worth?"

Allred and the father also demonstrated how McDowell used the bat (above).

Gloria Allred: Major League Baseball Coach Used Anti-Gay Slur

TMZ reports that attorney Gloria Allred is planning an announcement for later today about a Major League Baseball coach who used "shocking gay slurs" at a recent game:

Gloria-allred Allred says the comments and gestures were directed at 3 men whom the coach apparently thought were gay.

One of the fans, who brought his 9-year-old twin girls to the game, protested to the coach ... and according to Allred, the coach responded by saying, "Kids don't f**king belong at the baseball park."  She also claims the coach then approached the father "with threatening words and a baseball bat."

Allred will hold a news conference with the father and his twins at her L.A. office on Wednesday at 1 PM PDT.

Teen Gets 40 Years for Murder of Gay DC Principal Brian Betts

In May I posted about the murder of beloved gay D.C. school principal Brian Betts, who met his killers over a phone chat line. Yesterday, a 19-year-old was sentenced to 40 years for the murder:

Betts "Alante Saunders was sentenced Tuesday to 40 years in prison in Montgomery County Circuit Court. He pleaded guilty to felony murder earlier this month. Prosecutors said Saunders and Brian Betts, the principal of Shaw Middle School, met through a sex chat line and Betts agreed to leave the door of his home open for Saunders. Betts was found dead in his Silver Spring home April 15 after failing to show up for work. Three other teens have also been charged."

Gloria Allred, who served as attorney for the Betts family, says she'll request that the U.S. Justice Dept. probe Betts' murder as a hate crime.

Said Allred: "Brian’s family retained me to represent them as victims in the criminal case. The family has also retained me to explore whether or not Brian’s murder should also be prosecuted under the new Matthew Shepard federal hate crimes law. Brian was a gay man and we believe an investigation should be opened under that law to determine whether a hate crime has or has not been committed by defendant Saunders and if it has whether it is appropriate to proceed with a federal prosecution under that law."
