Bidding frenzy breaks out over British pub adorned with Banksy rat.
Markey-Musgrave race in Colorado attracts big outside bucks: "Musgrave campaign manager Jason Thielman said much of the independent spending is driven by the incumbent's support of a constitutional amendment defining marriage as between a man and a woman. He said that's led wealthy gay-rights activists, particularly Denver philanthropist Tim Gill, to spend millions of dollars against her in the three most recent elections. 'The radical homosexual movement driven by Tim Gill hates Marilyn Musgrave, and they are willing to spend anything and everything to settle their vindictive agenda,' Thielman said."

Schroeder told the paper that on Oct. 10 the couple was "resolving some differences that we had" and, as they walked out of the house, 'there were a few hugs and a kiss out front.' At that point, police arrived, handcuffed them, then drove them around while they 'picked up more people who presumably had committed other crimes,' he said."

You have to be social enough and socially adroit enough to read people, talk to people, and get them to talk to you. 'Is it a total surprise to me, if I were to go and look at it analytically, that gay guys want to be political reporters, and might excel at it?' asks another reporter. 'No. Because to be a good political reporter you have to be interested in power and sophisticated in seeing where it works and how it shifts. And I buy into the theory that growing up as a kid who feels different, you get to be very sophisticated about where power is, just in your own experience. You feel outsiderish, and you have that critical perspective.'"

West Hollywood Gays Take Down Sarah Palin Hanging Effigy
Earlier this week I posted about the tacky Halloween display put up by a gay couple in West Hollywood featuring an effigy of Sarah Palin hanging by a rope. It's been taken down:
"Sheriff's officials say resident decided to remove them after discussing the situation with West Hollywood Mayor Jeffrey Prang. 'My understanding is that the mayor had a long talk with the man and convinced him to bring it down. The homeowner began to realize what they had done caused a little more of a reaction than they had hoped for,' Sheriff's official Steve Whitmore says. Earlier today, protesters put up a pair of white sheets on sticks in effort to hide the display from the street Tuesday. Whoever put up the sheets could be cited for trespassing or infringing on free speech rights, said Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy Oscar Butao. However, nobody at the house has complained so far. The U.S. Secret Service recently looked into the display and said there was no threat. Deputy Special Agent in Charge Wayne Williams called the display unusual but said so far it seems to be harmless."
Said a spokesman for Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca: "The sheriff made this clear: This is a country that has freedom of speech and we protect that right even when we think it's idiotic and stupid and in bad taste and wrong to do."

Blood-sucking Vampire Moth Discovered!

Just in time for Halloween, a new moth has been discovered in Siberia, and it feeds on blood.
Let's hope it stays there.
It's thought to have evolved from a fruit-eating species: "Some researchers, [Entomologist Jennifer Zaspel] noted, hypothesize that blood-feeding in insects and animals evolved from behaviors such as feeding on tears, dung, and pus-filled wounds."
Lovely!
I'll take these guys, thanks.

Ashley Todd the Scariest Mask Yet This Halloween

Wonkette reports on a pumpkin which suffered the same attack as lying McCain volunteer Ashley Todd.
Todd's sick story was a small but satisfying victory against the racist scum which have perpetuated the hate in this election cycle. Jay Bookman at the Atlanta Journal Constitution notes: "So much of that story was unbelievable from the very beginning, yet certain people wanted to believe it so badly that they ignored all the warning signs and launched into full battle cry. Andy McCarthy at the National Review’s Corner responded with a post so embarrassing he has now taken it down so nobody can see it."
Below, clips of Brian Williams and Rick Sanchez reporting on the McCain campaign's steering of the incident to his political benefit. Sanchez calls out FOX and other outlets for carrying the story. The third clip shows the amount of time that FOX devoted to this false story. The fourth clip is a viral clip that went around over the weekend.

Gay Couple Puts Halloween Hate on Display in West Hollywood

Chad Michael Morrisette, a West Hollywood resident, and his partner are under fire for a Halloween display that depicts Sarah Palin hanging from a noose and John McCain emerging from flames out of a chimney. Of course Drudge is breathlessly flaunting it in red headlines.
Said Morrisette: "We see people stopping and taking pictures, and the tour buses are stopping and slowing down ... people reach out and take pictures...I know if we had done it with Barack Obama, people would've probably thrown things through our windows. The image of a hanged black man is a lot more intense than the image of a hanged white woman -- for our country -- in the history of our country...It should be seen as art and it should be seen within the month of October. It is Halloween. It's time to be scary. It's time to be spooky."
As much as I despise the GOP ticket, mimicking the hate and racist imagery that McCain supporters have been flaunting with regard to Obama isn't funny or original. It's just stooping to their level.

Scary World

A disturbing Halloween ghost is on display in Fairfield, Ohio. Watch the clip, AFTER THE JUMP...
In related news, Politico's Ben Smith reported over the weekend on a recent poll: "The poll asked voters whether they agreed with the statement that 'African-Americans often use race as an excuse to justify wrongdoing.' About a fifth of white voters said they 'strongly agreed.' Yet among those who agreed, 23 percent said they’d be supporting Obama...Anecdotes from across the battlegrounds suggest that there’s a significant minority of prejudiced white voters who will swallow hard and vote for the black man. 'I wouldn’t want a mixed marriage for my daughter, but I’m voting for Obama,' the wife of a retired Virginia coal miner, Sharon Fleming, told the Los Angeles Times recently. One Obama volunteer told Politico after canvassing the working-class white Philadelphia neighborhood of Fishtown recently, 'I was blown away by the outright racism, but these folks are … undecided. They would call him a [racial epithet] and mention how they don't know what to do because of the economy.' The notion that there might be 'racists for Obama,' as one Democrat called them, comes against the backdrop of a country whose white voters largely accept the notion of a black president."

News: Glaciers, Jared Leto, Gay Nursing Home, Kevin Rudd
NYT: Civil unions not enough. "Though such arrangements were created, often under court mandate, with a promise of treating same-sex couples the same as opposite-sex couples, many gays and lesbians say they have not delivered and can never do so because separate institutions are inherently unequal. Many also resent being denied use of the word marriage, which they say carries intangible benefits, prestige and status."

Glaciers melting faster than at any time since records began: "The details are revealed in the latest report from the World Glacier Monitoring Service and will add to growing alarm about the rise in sea levels and increased instances of flooding, avalanches and drought. Based on historical records and other evidence, the rate at which the glaciers are melting is also thought to be faster that at any time in the past 5,000 years, said Professor Wilfried Haeberli, director of the monitoring service. 'There's no absolute proof, but nevertheless the evidence is strong: this is really extraordinary.'"
Inside Berlin's Asta Nielsen Haus, the first nursing home in Europe to cater specifically to gays and lesbians: "We just want people to be able to speak freely of their pasts. They shouldn't have to worry about reactions or prejudices. It's simple really: no one should be shocked to go into a man's room and see a picture of another man. No one should have to explain themselves to others at this stage of life."

'I don’t know that one is harder than the other,' Nichols told Dallas Voice this week. 'I think that each is solved by letting people get to know you.' Nichols also faces a third challenge when it comes to gaining the support of Plano’s small but growing LGBT community: He’s a Republican."

But Cmdr. Kevin Ronan's attorney, William T. Ferris, said the tapes were made by a former midshipman who used them in an attempt to extort money from his client. Ferris said the tapes became public after his client refused to give money to the former midshipman, who had been dismissed from the Naval Academy for academic reasons and needed money for expenses. 'This was a plan to extort money from Commander Ronan that went awry,' Ferris said during his opening statement at the Washington Navy Yard."

San Francisco Officials on Halloween: "There Will Be No Party"
Following violence at last year's annual massive Halloween event in San Francisco's Castro district, city officials have announced that there will be no party in the Castro, nor will there be one at AT&T Park, which organizers had been considering as an alternate site. There will be no party at all.
At last year's Halloween in the Castro, several people were injured as gang violence broke out and shots injured nine people. At the time, a security guard at the event told the Chronicle: "When the shooting happened, people just dove to the ground like a wall of water."
The celebratory event has lost its luster, Dufty told the SF Chronicle: "It's not a holiday in the Castro. It's a night in which the neighborhood is overrun by people who come to gawk, not celebrate, and unfortunately it turns into gang night out in the Castro."
Supervisor Bevan Dufty has sent a letter to 110 businesses in the area, requesting that they be closed the night of the event to discourage partygoers from gathering. five have already agreed to close, including popular outdoor cafe Café Flore. There will be no road closures, no barricades set up, but police presence will be as strong as ever and say there will be "zero tolerance" for misbehavior.

Up to 10 Shot at Castro Halloween Fest in San Francisco
Up to ten people were shot last night when a gunman opened fire on the crowd as the massive Halloween bash that occurs each year in San Francisco's Castro district began to wind down.
According to the SF Chronicle, "Police officer heard shots fired around 10:40 p.m. Tuesday, as they began dispersing thousands of revelers under a new curfew that was aimed at controlling the traditionally raucous event in the city's gay and lesbian community. They arrived on Market Street, about a block from the main stage, to find victims scattered along about two blocks."
Increased police presence due to climbing levels of violence and gay bashing in recent years apparently made no difference. One security guard for the event told the Chronicle, "When the shooting happened, people just dove to the ground like a wall of water."
The early number of injuries (two life-threatening) was thought to be seven, but officials later identified three additional victims.

Alan Turing Jack O'Lantern Cracks the Halloween Code
Check out this great Alan Turing Jack-O'Lantern. It was created using a stencil taken from a blog that posts them for graffiti artists. While I've posted about Turing here before, I think that the creator of the Jack O'Lantern, Meryl, sums up the points of Turing's tragic bio quite nicely:
"The gentlemen depicted is Alan Turing, who is considered the father of modern computer science... maybe you've heard of the Turing test for artificial intelligence? He was British and worked for the British secret service as a mathematician and cryptographer until he was convicted of being a homosexual (which he was and which was considered a mental illness under the law). To avoid being sent to prison, he had to agree to undergo estrogen hormone therapy and he did for a year, but the homosexuality conviction caused him to lose his security clearance and therefore to lose his job. He killed himself a year later by eating an apple poisoned with cyanide, which seems a little ornate, I think. It's quite a sad story, but he makes a delightful pumpkin."
I'd have to agree.
For more on Turing read our previous post about the codebreaking machine he devised during World War II that has been recreated at Bletchley Park, England.

Is This Pumpkin Gay?

It has been reported to me that gay men have been scouring pumpkin patches in New York and other cities for white pumpkins in an attempt to make their Halloweens more upscale, minimalist, and as much like Ian Schrager hotel lobbies as possible. This trend is rumored to have been spawned by an article in the most recent issue of Martha Stewart Living, though I don't read that publication so I wouldn't know.
What I do know is that two Halloween homos (friends of mine) in New York who really try to go all out for the holidays have found that the demand has driven the price ($50 per pumpkin) of white pumpkins out of reach even of gay men with...disposable income!
So — they were only able to purchase one white pumpkin and had to settle for surrounding it with a bunch of tired orange ones and other assorted warty gourds. They probably even had to pull out that most dreaded of autumn cliches, the wicker cornucopia. Poor boys. I feel so sorry for them.
I would try to maybe FedEx them another, but because we've had striking grocery clerks in L.A. for a week now and I don't want to be a scab, I haven't had the chance to check out if there are any white pumpkins at the uber-gay Pavilions supermarket in West Hollywood. The only thing I can say for certain is that this Halloween, WHITE IS THE NEW ORANGE. You heard it here first.
