Harlow Cuadra Spared Death Penalty, Gets Life with No Parole

A jury deadlocked over death penalty sentencing means Harlow Cuadra will spend the rest of his life in prison with no chance for parole for the brutal murder of rival porn producer Bryan Kocis in 2007.

Ck Kocis' neck was slashed before being stabbed 28 times and burned over 90 percent of his body by a fire set to cover up the murder. Cuadra's co-conspirator and former lover Joseph Kerekes is serving a life sentence after pleading guilty at an earlier date. The jury deliberated over Cuadra's sentencing for five hours. Cuadra eventually received two consecutive life sentences.

House The Wilkes-Barre Times Leader reports: "Cuadra was convicted of first-degree homicide, conspiracy to commit criminal homicide, abuse of corpse, robbery, theft, tampering with evidence, two counts of arson and four conspiracy charges after a 12-day trial. The jury began deliberating Cuadra’s punishment just before 11 a.m. Monday after Melnick and Cuadra’s co-defense lawyer Paul Walker presented closing arguments. Melnick pushed for capital punishment, telling the jury Cuadra endangered firefighters and stole laptop computers, cameras and a Rolex watch from Kocis’ home. The danger to firefighters battling the intense blaze at Kocis’ residence and the items stolen during a robbery were two aggravating factors prosecutors sought for the death penalty."

Harlow Cuadra Found Guilty of Porn Producer's Murder

A jury today found Harlow Cuadra guilty of first-degree murder in the death of Bryan Kocis, a rival producer in the gay porn industry. Cuadra and fellow porn actor, lover, and business partner Joseph Kerekes were accused of stabbing Kocis nearly 30 times and setting fire to Kocis' home to cover it up:

Kocis "It took the jury of eight men and four women about three-and-a-half hours to make a decision. They found Cuadra guilty of 12 charges, most importantly the murder of Kocis. The convicted killer had nothing to say on his way out of court, but his mother couldn't be consoled. She prayed in court before the verdict with other family members and then wept when she heard the word 'guilty.' Cuadra's sentence is now in the hands of that same jury. They will have to decide whether to punish him with a death sentence or life in prison. The jury will decide the penalty Friday."

A gag order has been imposed until sentencing. Kerekes, who refused to testify in Cuadra's defense, is serving a life sentence.

Harlow Cuadra Testifies in Gay Porn Murder Trial: 'I'm No Killer'

Porn actor Harlow Cuadra took the stand in his own defense yesterday as his trial for the 2007 murder of porn producer Bryan Kocis entered its final days. Cuadra and fellow actor Joseph Kerekes are accused of the murder of gay porn producer Bryan Kocis and setting fire to Kocis' home to cover it up.

Cuadramurder WNEP reports that Kerekes shocked the courtroom by saying he changed his mind at the last minute to testify in Cuadra's defense:

"Before Cuadra's testimony, Kerekes, who was in shackles, took the stand. He admitted he had agreed to testify on Cuadra's behalf but had a late change of heart. 'I've been thinking a lot about my parents. It would destroy them to say I did something I didn't do,' Kerekes told the court. After Kerekes left the courtroom, Cuadra told jurors his former lover was controlling, jealous and a sociopath. Cuadra said Kerekes was the murderer who burst into Kocis' home and, 'Takes out this knife and slashes him. Bryan immediately grabs his throat.' Cuadra became emotional and sobbed at times while on the stand. He told jurors he was so frightened by what Kerekes had done that he kept his mouth shut. At one point in the testimony, Cuadra turned to his mother sitting in the courtroom and said, 'I'm sorry Mama. I'm sorry.'"

Kerekes pleaded guilty in December to second-degree homicide and is serving a life sentence.

Closing arguments are scheduled for today. Cuadra may face the death penalty if convicted.
