Bishop Harry Jackson: 'Marriage is on Life Support'

Harryjackson

MSNBC's Contessa Brewer asks D.C.'s anti-gay bigot Bishop Harry Jackson, "People seem so energized to go out and fight same-sex marriage. why aren't they spending all that energy fighting divorce?"

On another note, in the earlier clip I posted of Brewer I was just noting the unfortunate use of the term "traditional marriage". I thought the rest of her reporting was excellent.

Watch: Homophobic Bishop Harry Jackson at Values Voter Summit

Jackson

Bishop Harry Jackson, the leader of the crusade against Washington D.C.'s equality laws, spoke at the Values Voter Summit over the weekend, asking conference attendees to tone down their racism against Obama because it'll be harder for him to convince his followers to mobilize against gays.

He also claims the LGBT movement is a bunch of elite lawyers who are trying to prevent poor Blacks from voting to save hetero marriage:

Says Jackson: "[The so-called persecuted gay movement] is a handful of privileged people who are intolerant of anybody with another idea who want to oppress and suppress the truth in the name of freedom."

D.C. Council: 'Votes Aligned' for Marriage Equality Bill

Washington D.C. may soon become the only jurisdiction south of the Mason-Dixon line where gays and lesbians can get married:

Dc"After months of buildup and behind-the-scenes lobbying, a bill by David A. Catania, one of two openly gay members of the council, has been drafted and is ready to be introduced in the coming weeks. Catania (I-At Large) expects a final vote before the end of the year. On Thursday, Catania said he had 10 co-sponsors, all but assuring that the measure will be approved by the council. The bill would have to survive congressional review before it could become law. The bill, a copy of which was obtained by The Washington Post, would change the law to say that 'marriage is the legally recognized union of two people' and that 'any person who otherwise meets the eligibility requirements . . . may marry any other eligible person regardless of gender.'"

No doubt homophobic Bishop Harry Jackson, who has been relentless (and unsuccessful) in fighting the District's recognition of same-sex marriages performed elsewhere, and the National Organization for Marriage (NOM), which just opened a D.C. office to fight the DOMA repeal, will be all over this.

Watch: Bishop Harry Jackson's New Crusade on Same-Sex Marriage

Harryjackson2

Bishop Harry Jackson is continuing his crusade against same-sex marriage despite the recent defeat of a proposed referendum that would have blocked the D.C. Council bill allowing recognition of same-sex marriages performed elsewhere.

The WaPo reportsDc "Jackson sent out a statement Monday stating that he and other opponents of same-sex marriage would file an initiative request with the elections board Tuesday. If approved by the board, the initiative would give District residents an opportunity to vote sometime next year on whether to legalize same-sex marriage in the District. Jackson, who says he believes that most city voters oppose same-sex marriage, is hoping his proposal will slow efforts by the D.C. Council to legalize those marriages. Sometime this fall, council member David A. Catania (I-At Large) is expected to file a bill to legalize same-sex marriage in the District."

Peter Rosenstein, president of the Campaign for All D.C. Families, believes that Jackson won't prevail in his efforts: "It is our belief that once again Bishop Jackson will find that the laws of D.C. protect minorities from discrimination of the sort that he and his followers would like to inflict. I hope that when this initiative is ruled out of order that the bishop will then return to Maryland and leave the people of the District alone so that they may continue to celebrate the diversity that has made our city great."
