Gay and Lesbian Band Heads to Inaugural Parade: PHOTO

Band

The Lesbian & Gay Big Apple Corps is one of the regional bands that will make up part of The Lesbian and Gay Band Association which is marching in today's inaugural parade.

Here's a cute photo of them shot this morning by Mike Szabo of the band in their bus on the way to the parade staging area.

The Washington Blade's Chris Johnson has a nice piece up about the contingent:

It won’t be hard to pick out the Lesbian & Gay Band Association amid all the other contingents on Monday during the 57th Presidential Inauguration Parade.

The honor guard will be carrying a rainbow Pride flag as it leads the rest of the band members across Pennsylvania Avenue. One of the selections the band will play is “Edge of Glory,” a hit from gay icon Lady Gaga. And the band members will be clad in fitted black outfits with purple accents.

Adam DeRosa, president of the Lesbian & Gay Band Association, says the outfits were chosen with a nod to symbolism.

“Purple is in some ways, if you’re going to narrow it down to one color, a much more of a universal for the gay community,” DeRosa says. “And for the camera, again, we wanted it to be something that was really going to stick out.”

Rapper Lupe Fiasco Removed from Inauguration Party Stage After Politically-Charged Anti-Obama Song: VIDEO

Lupe_fiasco

Grammy-winning rapper Lupe Fiasco was removed from the stage Sunday night at the Inauguration Celebration Party sponsored by StartUp RockOn after a lengthy, politically-charged set which reportedly went on for 30 minutes when he reportedly refused to move on to the next song from one with lyrics that included:

"Limbaugh is a racist, Glenn Beck is a racist. Gaza Strip was getting bombed, Obama didn't say s—t. That’s why I ain't vote for him, next one either."

Shortly thereafter, security appeared and escorted Fiasco from the stage.

The party's sponsor Hypervocal released a statement denying the rapper was removed for his lyrics:

StartUp RockOn is all about startups helping startups. At Sunday night’s Inauguration Celebration at the Hamilton Live, organizers set out to honor innovative visionaries with grants, accolades and a party worthy of the success we achieved at the RNC and DNC this summer.

Lupe Fiasco performed at this private event, and as you may have read, he left the stage earlier than we had planned. But Lupe Fiasco was not “kicked off stage” for an “anti-Obama rant.” We are staunch supporters of free speech, and free political speech. This was not about his opinions. Instead, after a bizarrely repetitive, jarring performance that left the crowd vocally dissatisfied, organizers decided to move on to the next act.

Some people are asking me questions like this is a more shocking subject, which is so strange," he said.

1NewsIcon A review of James Franco's Interior Leather Bar, an homage to the graphic gay sex cut from the controversial gay classic Cruisin': "Interior Leather Bar does contain one very graphic sex scene - a tender encounter between two men we are told are a real-life couple, which seems to be entirely against the film's idea of re-queering gay sex. And in general it's much more about talking about sex than actually showing it, which also makes its claims toward provocation a little weaker."

Gay Inaugural Poet: I Am Here Because This Is America

BlanoRRichard Blanco, the gay Latino poet chosen to read his work at President Obama's second inauguration tomorrow, penned a piece at CNN today in which eloquently illustrates the quintessential American elements of his origin story, a story that includes a particularly homophobic grandmother.

From his piece:

Being named poet laureate for the inauguration personally validates and stitches together several ideals against which I have long measured America, since the days of watching "My Three Sons" and "The Dick Van Dyke Show" reruns.

For one, the essence of the American dream: how a little Cuban-American kid on the margins of mainstream America could grow up with confidence, have the opportunity to become an engineer thanks to the hard work of his parents who could barely speak English, and then go on, choosing to become a poet who is now asked to speak to, for and about the entire nation.

The most powerful quality of our country is that each day is full of a million possibilities: We are a country of fierce individualism, which invites me to shape my life as I see fit. As I reflect on this, I see how the American story is in many ways my story -- a country still trying to negotiate its own identity, caught between the paradise of its founding ideals and the realities of its history, trying to figure it out, trying to "become" even today -- the word hope as fresh on our tongues as it ever was.

Blanco will take the stage tomorrow after Kelly Clarkson sings, which will be directly after President Obama's speech. Obama's first inaugural speech was about 21 minutes, so Blanco should appear tomorrow at about 12:30 or 1ish. But you'll already be watching, so you won't miss him, right?
