The TV Legacy Of 'Queer Eye For The Straight Guy': VIDEO

Queereye

When Queer Eye For the Straight Guy premiered in July of 2003, cell phones still had buttons, the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court was still months away from becoming the first state to recognize same-sex marriage and no Kardashians had their own TV show.

Queer Eye was not only a surprise hit, but it also became a cultural phenomenon. After five seasons, Carson Kressley, Jai Rodriguez, Ted Allen, Kyan Douglas and Thom Filicia were household names. The original Fab Five will reunite on Bravo Sunday at 9 p.m. Eastern on a special Queer Eye Reunion: 10 Years Later, hosted by Andy Cohen.

A decade later, the reality program's societal impact is still up for some debate. Some applaud the show's ability to expose a broader audience to gay people, while others criticize its reliance on stereotypes.

Whatever Queer Eye's cultural legacy may be, it's left an indelible mark on the television landscape, paving the way for some of the shows we love today.

Check out a few of the shows influenced by Queer Eye For the Straight Guy, AFTER THE JUMP …

News: Bombing Budapest, Video Violence, Marilyn Digs Her Own Political Musgrave, Portland Even Gayer Than McDonald's & More

Quinto_zachary1road.jpg Magnum, a gay sauna in Budapest, Hungary, was the target of four petrol bombs early today. This is the second bombing in a week. In both cases, the perpetrators called first to make sure people were inside. "We are doubtful if the police are really protecting the gay establishments as they promised," says Gabor Kuszing of the Hungarian gay-rights group Patent Association.

"What I grew up with was, if you even think about boobs, you’re going to hell," he tells Rolling Stone. "But let’s face it, they’re fantastic."

road.jpg Ever seen Swoon? Its director, Tom Kalin, is back with Savage Grace, the true story of socialite Barbara Daly Baekeland. Julianne Moore plays the neurotic woman, who was said to have bedded her own son, Antony (Eddie Redmayne), as a means of curing his homosexuality. Instead, it probably helped drive him toward what became a grisly day of reckoning in 1972. The movie—out in limited release in the U.S. for the past month—is generating a big stir due to extended portrayals of their incestuous liaisons.

Mroad.jpg Madonna's Sticky and Sweet Tour setlist might very well contain classics "Borderline" (not presented live in 23 years) and "Into the Groove," the Oscar-winning "You Must Love Me" from Evita and, of course, "La Isla Bonita"…a song Madonna seems to think is on par with "Vogue" considering how often it's trotted out. Other oldies under consideration? "Dress You Up," "Everybody" and "Angel."

Jai Rodriguez Makes a Play for the Lips of Mario Lopez

Queer Eye's Jai Rodriguez is set to make an appearance on Dr 90210 (now starring Big Brother's "Dr. Will" Kirby) this Thursday.

He's reportedly going to ask Dr. Will for cosmetic enhancement because he wants lips like Mario Lopez.

LipsBuddy TV writes: "One would hope that anyone who shares a network with the oddly charming but oddly puffy-lipped Jeff Lewis from Flipping Out would be cautious with any kind of lip enhancement. But if Lopez lips are what Jai wants, surely no one will begrudge him the chance to do a little self-makeover. This won't be Jai's only encounter with plastic surgery-related TV over the next few months. His other endeavor, however, won't be reality. As we've reported, he will also be appearing on the FX series Nip/Tuck as 'Chaz, an LA fashionista with a dirty little secret.' Maybe his own surgery was research for the character."

I know a lot of people who wouldn't mind Mario Lopez' lips on their face, or anywhere else for that matter.

UPDATE: Well, apparently (as one of our commenters has noted) the episode has aired at least once already. And here's the clip!

And be sure not to miss...
