Socarides To Osteen: 'You Think You Choose To Be Straight?' VIDEO

SocaridesOsteen

Host Soledad O'Brien was admirably tenacious in asking conservative pastor Joel Osteen to explain condemnation of homosexuality on CNN's Starting Point this morning. She was particularly intrigued as to how the mega-pastor can claim to be "lifting people up" while also telling thousands of followers, many of whom may be gay, that same-sex love is a sin. Osteen, predictably, claims his views are based on scripture.

Later, New Yorker writer and former Bill Clinton advisor Richard Socarides to wonder whether Osteen would tell a gay teenager to do what feels comfortable and whether Osteen believes people choose to be gay — or straight, for that matter.

"You think you choose to be straight," Socarides asks, to which Osteen replies, "I know I have not chosen to be straight. I just feel like that’s who I am.” Perhaps realizing he's opened the door to affirming homosexuality's intrinsic nature, Osteen says, "I stick to issues I understand."

According to him, he'd rather focus on the things he's an expert in, rather than clarifying or defending his offensive and hurtful remarks about LGBT people.

Cher's Joel Osteen Tweet Causes Gay Firestorm, Drama

CherOsteen1

Here are the facts: singer Cher last night took to Twitter to praise inspirational speaker preacher Joel Osteen. "I love Joel Osteen, he's an example of Christian," she wrote. Osteen is "funny" and "not preachy."

After being reminded that Osteen thinks being gay is a sin, Cher soon tweeted, "He's pretty uncool about the about gays." Thus began a back-and-forth between the singer and her equality-minded fans, culminating in an appropriately dramatic ending: Cher threatening to leave Twitter.

Joel Osteen: Being Gay is a Sin, But I'm Not a Gay Basher - VIDEO

Osteen

Megapastor Joel Osteen told FOX News' Chris Wallace on Sunday that he believes being gay is a sin but that he isn't a gay basher:

"I believe the Scripture says that being gay is a sin. But, you know, every time I say that, Chris, I get people say, well, you are a gay hater and you're a gay basher. I'm not. I don't -- I don't dislike anybody. Gays are some of the nicest, kindest, most loving people in the world. But my faith is based on what I believe the Scripture says and that's the way I read the Scripture. I think we should discriminate against anybody. So, I think -- yes, I don't think there is an issue where somebody couldn't go visit a gay loved one in the hospital. I don't think that's right. They love each other. "So, I think there should be some. I'm not for gay marriage, but I'm not for discriminating against people.

Pastor Joel Osteen: Homosexuality is 'a Sin', Elton John and David Furnish are Sinners

Osteen

Megachurch pastor Joel Osteen tells Piers Morgan, in a show airing on Wednesday, that homosexuality is a sin:

"The scriptures shows that it's a sin. But you know, I'm not one of those that are out there to bash homosexuals and tell them that they're terrible people and all of that. I mean, there are other sins in the Bible too...I don't believe homosexuality is God's best for a person's life."

Osteen has spewed his "God's best" BS before on The View.

He then goes on to tell Morgan that Elton John and David Furnish are sinners, and explains why:

"Well, it's strictly back to what the scripture says. I mean, I can't grab one part and say God wants you to be blessed and live an abundant life, and not grab the other part that says, you know what? You know, live that kind of life. So it comes back to the scripture. I'm not the judge. You know, God didn't tell me to go around judging everybody."
