John Galliano Convicted Over Anti-Semitic Remarks in Paris

A court has issued a suspended sentence to designer John Galliano over two incidents in which he made anti-Semitic remarks at a Paris bar, the AP reports:

John_galliano Galliano, who didn't attend the announcement of the verdict, was given no prison time. He was given a suspended €6,000 ($8,400) fine, which means it goes on his criminal record but he does not have to pay it. The Paris court found him guilty of "public insults based on origin, religious affiliation, race or ethnicity" stemming from two separate incidents at a Paris bar.

Dior fired Galliano in March over the incidents.

Designer John Galliano Releases Statement, Goes to Rehab

Following questioning over a drunken attack on a couple in a Parisian cafe, the posting of a video containing an anti-Semitic rant on the internet, and his expulsion from Dior, designer John Galliano is reportedly headed into rehab:

John_galliano He was persuaded to accept treatment for his alcohol problems by close colleagues and friends like the supermodels Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss, the sources said. While the treatment center is not known, it is likely that his destination is The Meadows, a facility in Wickenberg, Arizona, where Elton John and Donatella Versace were treated in recent years.

For Christian Dior, the billion-dollar fashion house that dismissed him on Tuesday for making anti-Semitic remarks while apparently drunk, the problems are only multiplying. The Dior autumn 2011 women’s wear show will go ahead here on Friday, according to a person at Dior who asked not to be identified.

UPDATE: Galliano has released his first public statement in which he denies he made any anti-Semitic remarks.

Dior designer John Galliano appeared in court in Paris yesterday:

John_galliano "French prosecutors were examining conflicting testimony on Tuesday before deciding whether or not to charge British fashion designer John Galliano with anti-Semitic and abusive behaviour...The official said prosecutors expect to announce later on Tuesday whether any charges would emerge from the inquiry. 'Either the probe will lead to prosecutions or it won't, but we'll soon know,' he said."

Natalie Portman, whose campaign for Dior's 'Miss Dior Cherie' fragrance just came out, condemned the designer, calling his anti-Semitic remarks "disgusting":

“I am deeply shocked and disgusted by the video of John Galliano’s comments that surfaced today. In light of this video, and as an individual who is proud to be Jewish, I will not be associated with Mr. Galliano in any way. I hope at the very least, these terrible comments remind us to reflect and act upon combating these still-existing prejudices that are the opposite of all that is beautiful.”
