A second gay candidate joins race for Mayor Naugle's seat in Fort Lauderdale: "Political newcomer Earl Rynerson, owner of a tile store, joins former City Commissioner Dean Trantalis as an openly gay mayoral hopeful. Rynerson said he wants to polish the city's image, which he said was tarnished by Naugle. Naugle last summer uttered a quote that was heard across gay America: 'I use the word homosexual. Most of them aren't gay; they're unhappy.'"

John Hagee Videos Removed from YouTube
The Huffington Post reports that at least 120 videos featuring controversial pastor John Hagee have been removed from YoutTube:
"The timing was, perhaps, more peculiar than the move itself. Clips that had been online for well over a year were now being subjected to 'third-party' copyright infringement claims. And while Hagee had not been in the mainstream press since he and Sen. John McCain ended their official relationship a month prior, Hagee's Christians United for Israel annual summit is just days away, and at least one prominent McCain backer (Sen. Joseph Lieberman) is set to be in attendance."
The clips removed include Hagee's 1990 sermon in which the pastor said Hitler was acting on God's behalf in "hunting" the Jews so that they might establish the state of Israel.
Said Max Blumenthal: "Obviously Hagee's minions orchestrated this move to suppress bad publicity ahead of their July summit. This is a response to the McCain debacle and concern over bad publicity for Lieberman's appearance."
They did, however, miss Talking Points Memo's wrapup, of Hagee statements bashing Catholics and gays, which you can view AFTER THE JUMP...

John McCain Rejects Hagee, Parsley Endorsements

John McCain on Thursday finally rejected the endorsements of two controversial pastors, John Hagee and Rod Parsley:
"McCain rejected the months-old endorsement of Texas preacher John Hagee after an audio recording surfaced in which the preacher said God sent Adolf Hitler to help Jews reach the promised land. McCain called the comment 'crazy and unacceptable.' He later repudiated the support of Rod Parsley, an Ohio preacher who has sharply criticized Islam and called the religion inherently violent. McCain issued a statement Thursday afternoon announcing his decision about Hagee. 'Obviously, I find these remarks and others deeply offensive and indefensible, and I repudiate them. I did not know of them before Reverend Hagee's endorsement, and I feel I must reject his endorsement as well,' he said. Later, in Stockton, he told reporters: 'I just think that the statement is crazy and unacceptable.' Then in an interview with The Associated Press, McCain said he rejected Parsley's support, too. 'I believe there is no place for that kind of dialogue in America, and I believe that even though he endorsed me, and I didn't endorse him, the fact is that I repudiate such talk, and I reject his endorsement,' McCain told the AP."

Pastor John Hagee: Hitler 'Hunted' Jews Under God's Order

This clip of Pastor John Hagee, whose endorsement John McCain has gladly accepted, is making the rounds. It's a sermon Hagee gave in 1990 that says Hitler was acting on God's behalf in "hunting" the Jews so that they might establish the state of Israel.
Says Hagee: "'And they the hunters should hunt them,' that will be the Jews. 'From every mountain and from every hill and from out of the holes of the rocks.' If that doesn't describe what Hitler did in the holocaust you can't see that."
Hagee, as you likely know, has made disparaging remarks about Catholics (for which he recently apologized) and has said that gay sin was responsible for Hurricane Katrina.
McCain has called the Hagee/Katrina controversy "nonsense."
Joe Lieberman recently defended Hagee, saying, "He represents a lot of people in this country, particularly Christians who care about the state of Israel."

Sean Penn slams Obama's "phenomenally inhuman and unconstitutional" voting record, expresses optimism: "I don't have a candidate I'm supporting and I'm certainly interested and excited by the hope that Barack Obama is inspiring. It would also protect religious institutions that have moral objections to same-sex marriage from being compelled to perform such ceremonies."

I can’t leave because I’m not allowed, and I can’t stay because I fear for my own safety. And, of course, they have worked together, for ages — or at least since 1980. There was Chuck Scarborough, reading something on a computer screen embedded in the desk and not listening to his co-anchor, Sue Simmons. So she let him have it in what sounded like mock derision."

John Hagee Retracts Retraction of Katrina 'Gay Sin' Remarks
In late April, McCain supporter John Hagee appeared to retract his past remarks that gay sin brought Hurricane Katrina upon New Orleans, releasing a statement that said:
"As a believing Christian, I see the hand of God in everything that happens here on earth, both the blessings and the curses. But ultimately neither I nor any other person can know the mind of God concerning Hurricane Katrina. I should not have suggested otherwise. No matter what the cause of the storm, my heart goes out to all who suffered in this terrible tragedy. There but for the grace of God go any one of us."
Well, that didn't last long. IHagee held a conference call with religious supporters yesterday, the Dallas News reports:
"When a woman on the call asked why he seemed to have backed away from his Katrina comments in face of criticism, Hagee said he hadn't. As for the Katrina, he said, God controls hurricanes and 'God always punishes unconfessed sin.'"
Anyone surprised? Didn't think so.
McCain most recently called the controversy over Hagee's remarks "nonsense."

'But I think if you asked longtime matrimonial lawyers, 'Give me the your top 10 worst,' this one is going to appear on everyone's list.' The proceedings, which are expected to last up to six weeks in Elizabeth's Union County Courthouse, have been divided into three sections. Superior Court Judge Karen Cassidy has said she will rule separately on each part: Custody of the couple's 6-year-old daughter, Jacqueline; the amount of child support and alimony McGreevey must pay Matos McGreevey; and, finally, Matos McGreevey's claim McGreevey defrauded her, tricking her into a marriage of political convenience even though he knew he was gay."

Pastor John Hagee Retracts Claim That Gay Sin Caused Katrina

Early last week, Pastor John Hagee told right wing radio show host Dennis Prager that he still believed that Hurricane Katrina destroyed New Orleans because gays were planning to hold a sinful gathering there.
The reiteration inspired a flurry of renewed protest, forcing John McCain, who has "gladly" accepted Hagee's endorsement, to respond. By the end of the week, a short-tempered McCain was snapping at reporters that the whole controversy was "nonsense."
At about the same time, apparently, Hagee's office was issuing this statement:
"As a believing Christian, I see the hand of God in everything that happens here on earth, both the blessings and the curses. But ultimately neither I nor any other person can know the mind of God concerning Hurricane Katrina. I should not have suggested otherwise. John McCain on the Hagee Controversy: 'It's Nonsense'

Yesterday in New Orleans, John McCain was asked repeatedly about the endorsement he accepted from anti-gay Pastor John Hagee, who has said that gay sin was responsible for Hurricane Katrina's destruction of that city.
At one point on his tour bus, he snapped at a reporter, repeatedly calling the Hagee controversy "nonsense." Watch it, AFTER THE JUMP...
Just after the exchange in the video clip above, McCain attempted to deflect the criticism by bringing up Reverend Jeremiah Wright. Said McCain "I didn't attend Pastor Hagee's church for 20 years. There's a great deal of difference, in my view, between someone who endorses you, and other circumstances."

In related news, Newt Gingrich was asked about McCain and how he should respond to Hagee's anti-Catholic and anti-gay statements. Gingrich said he should reject the anti-Catholic statements but remained mum about the anti-gay ones.

McCain to Face New Orleans Protest Over Anti-gay Pastor Hagee

John McCain is going for a photo-op in New Orleans' 9th ward today, but he will be met there by gay groups urging him to disassociate himself with pastor John Hagee, whose endorsement McCain gladly accepted and who this week told a radio host that he stands by his comments that Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans because sinful gays were planning an event there.
According to The Atlantic's Marc Ambinder, the flier on the left, above, is one that McCain will be greeted by. MoveOn is behind the action, asking people to sign a petition which will be delivered to McCain at his photo-op in a number of hours. The petition reads: "John Hagee continues to blame the people of New Orleans for the catastrophe of Katrina. Senator McCain: If you reject intolerance and bigotry, reject Hagee's political support and stop courting hate-mongers like him."
You can find that petition here.

John Hagee Stands by Remarks that Sinful Gays Caused Katrina
Pastor John Hagee, whose endorsement John McCain gladly gobbled up, stood by remarks he made in 2006 that Hurricane Katrina was God's punishment for the sinful Southern Decadence party that gays were planning to hold in New Orleans.
At that time, Hagee said: "I believe that New Orleans had a level of sin that was offensive to God, and they are -- were recipients of the judgment of God for that. The newspaper carried the story in our local area that was not carried nationally that there was to be a homosexual parade there on the Monday that the Katrina came. And the promise of that parade was that it was going to reach a level of sexuality never demonstrated before in any of the other Gay Pride parades. So I believe that the judgment of God is a very real thing. I know that there are people who demur from that, but I believe that the Bible teaches that when you violate the law of God, that God brings punishment sometimes before the day of judgment. And I believe that the Hurricane Katrina was, in fact, the judgment of God against the city of New Orleans."
Right-wing radio talk show host Dennis Prager yesterday asked Hagee to confirm if he still stands by those comments, asking, of Katrina, "I’m only trying to understand that in the case of New Orleans, you do feel that God’s hand was in it because of a sinful city?"
Responded Hagee: "That it was a city that was planning a sinful conduct, yes."
Think Progress adds: "In February, after working hard to gain Hagee’s endorsement, McCain said he was “very honored” to receive it. Since then, he has both “repudiate[d]” and defended Hagee’s anti-Catholic and “anti-anything” remarks. But as Think Progress has noted, McCain has never specifically commented on Hagee’s offensive beliefs about Hurricane Katrina or his anti-gay comments. Given the fact that McCain will be in New Orleans tomorrow, will reporters ask whether he agrees with Hagee belief that the devastated city was cursed because of a gay pride parade? We’ll be watching."

Pastor John Hagee: Anti-Gay Katrina Remarks 'So Far Off-Base'
Deborah Solomon of The New York Times Magazine quizzes John McCain's buddy, the controversial pastor John Hagee in this Sunday's issue, according to Editor & Publisher:
"McCain has attempted to distance himself from some of Hagee's views, much as Barack Obama is doing in relation to Rev. Jeremiah Wright. But unlike McCain, Obama has not stood on stage with Wright and accepted his accolades this year. Interviewed by Deborah Solomon, Hagee refused to discuss his statement that Hurricane Katrina was God's punishment for a gay rights parade in New Orleans, calling it 'so far off-base.' He claims, 'Our church is not hard against the gay people. Our church teaches what the bible teaches, that it is not a righteous lifestyle. But of course we must love even sinners.' He also said that charges that he had bashed the Catholic Church ('false cult system,' etc.) have been 'grossly mischaracterized....I was referring to those Christians who ignore the Gospels.' Asked what he thinks of Obama, he answers, 'He is going to be difficult to beat, because the man is a master of communication. If he were in the ministry, he would make it in the major leagues overnight.'"
Hagee's statements about Catholics and the U.S. support of a two-state Israeli/Palestinian solution, not to mention gays, have been widely condemned, yet McCain refuses to distance himself from him. In mid-March, McCain said: "I will say that he said that his words were taken out of context, he defends his position. I hope that maybe you’d give him a chance to respond. He says he has never been anti-Catholic, but I repudiate the words that create that impression."

New York Governor Eliot Spitzer resigns: "From those to whom much is given, much is expected. Florent is currently battling his landlord in court over tax increases and is withholding rent as a result. The litigation also means he does not plan to simply pack up shop on the 31st. 'I talked to my lawyer and [the restaurant] will stay open for two or three months. I'd like to end on a high note and I think Gay Pride Day would be perfect.' "All I can tell you is I'm very proud to have pastor Hagee's support," said John McCain, about his recent endorsement by Pastor John Hagee, whose statements about Catholics and the U.S. support of a two-state Israeli/Palestinian solution, not to mention gays, have been widely condemned. I mentioned this briefly last week, but Hagee's statements are now detailed in a video clip put together by the folks at Talking Points Memo.
Here's what Hagee said about Hurricane Katrina in an appearance in 2006 on NPR's Fresh Air: "All hurricanes are acts of God, because God controls the heavens. I believe that New Orleans had a level of sin that was offensive to God, and they are -- were recipients of the judgment of God for that.

It's time for John McCain to denounce this man rather than embrace him.
