Towleroad TV: Talking 'Beginners' with Ewan McGregor

Josh Helmin is also one half of the blog Josh & Josh Are Rich and Famous.

I recently had a chance to sit down and talk with Ewan McGregor (and co-star Christopher Plummer, as well as writer/director Mike Mills) about the superb, charming new film Beginners. (The film is getting 87% positive reviews according to Rotten Tomatoes.) The film features McGregor as an illustrator dealing with the revelations that his father (Plummer) is both gay and has been diagnosed with terminal cancer. It's based on director Mills' own father.

Toward the end of our interview, I couldn't resist asking Ewan about some of his same-sex screen kisses (a question which didn't make the final cut in the video). Asked if he would repeat any of those screen kisses if he could (from Velvet Goldmine, The Pillow Book, and I Love You Phillip Morris), Ewan laughed good-naturedly and said, "Ah, well, that wouldn't very gentlemanly of me to say, would it? They were very nice people to kiss--all of them. It would be ungentlemanly to say more."

Can't blame a guy for asking.

BEGINNERS is open now in major cities and continues to roll out on more screens throughout June.

Towleroad Interview: Julia Roberts Talks 'Eat Pray Love', Gay Rights

Guestblogger JOSH HELMIN

Not long ago I had the opportunity to fly out to Napa, California, (with my best friend, Josh K.) for the Eat Pray Love press junket. When I finally sat down opposite Julia Roberts for our chat, I explained that I was from a gay news outlet so that she wouldn't be surprised when a couple of the questions skewed gay. She smiled and laughed and said, 'Well, good. I like a little brightness first thing in the morning.'"

She has a great sense of humor, and isn't afraid to unleash the famous $20 million laugh (see it at 3:05 in the video below, along with aforementioned sense of humor), and also had some great things to say about gay equality and acceptance, not only in the countries where Eat Pray Love was filmed, but also at home here in the United States. Julia hasn't said much in the press about gay rights and equality, so we're proud to bring you this exclusive interview, along with some additional discussion with director Ryan Murphy.

Eat Pray Love opens everywhere Friday.

Towleroad Interview: Judy Shepard on Hate Crimes, Forgiveness, and The Meaning of Matthew

Judy Shepard, tireless crusader against anti-gay hate crimes since her son Matthew was murdered in 1998, has a new memoir out — The Meaning of Matthew: My Son's Murder in Laramie, and a World Transformed. Over Pride weekend in New York City, Towleroad correspondent Josh Helmin interviewed Shepard about the book, her experience as a Grand Marshall at NYC's Pride Parade, and whether she could ever offer forgiveness to her son's killers.
