A Sad Day at the Kentucky Derby

Big Brown won the 134th Kentucky Derby over the weekend, but overshadowing the win was the collapse and euthanization of second-place finisher Eight Belles. The horse's death has many calling for research, reform and investigations.

Sports Illustrated reports: "PETA faxed a letter Sunday to Kentucky's racing authority claiming the filly was 'doubtlessly injured before the finish' and asked that Saez be suspended while Eight Belles' death is investigated. 'What we really want to know, did he feel anything along the way?' PETA spokeswoman Kathy Guillermo said. 'If he didn't then we can probably blame the fact that they're allowed to whip the horses mercilessly.' Eight Belles trainer Larry Jones said the filly was clearly happy when she crossed the finish line. 'I don't know how in the heck they can even come close to saying that,' Jones told The Associated Press on Sunday. 'She has her ears up, clearly galloping out.'"

WKYT reports on a recent attack outside Bang Nightclub in Lexington, Kentucky:

"Lexington Police are investigating an attack outside a nightclub as a possible hate crime. It happened this weekend after a fundraiser at Bang nightclub on North Limestone. A man says as he walked to his car two men yelled an anti-gay remark, then began punching him in the face. His two front teeth were knocked out, and he suffered some facial injuries. Lexington police say the are taking the crime seriously, but the victim was not able to give them a good description of his attackers. Mayor Newberry also says his office is looking into the attack. The owner of the alternative lifestyle club says he hasn't had problems of this sort in the 10 years he's been in business."

Kentucky Senate Passes Bill Banning Benefits for Gay Partners

The Kentucky Senate has passed a bill that would ban universities and state agencies from offering benefits to the partners of gay and lesbian employees:

"The vote on Senate Bill 112 was 30-5, with Democratic Sens. Ernesto Scorsone of Lexington, Denise Harper Angel of Louisville, Gerald Neal of Louisville, R.J. Palmer of Winchester and Tim Shaughnessy of Louisville voting against it. 'The only thing that drives this measure is a gay-bashing effort,' said Scorsone, a homosexual. Proponents of the bill say allowing universities to offer domestic-partner benefits violates the Kentucky Constitution, which was amended in 2004 to ban same-sex marriage. 'I have sympathy for Sen. Scorsone,' said Senate President David Williams, R-Burkesville. 'I know it's difficult for him to deal with this issue. Nobody directed any comments at him, nor would we have stood for anyone to say anything disrespectful on the floor.'"

Bunch of bigots. Isn't it great how even the Courier-Journal paints Scorsone as not really a person but: 'a homosexual'.

The bill passed on religious values. Said sponsor Vernie McGaha, R-Russell Springs: "I do not recognize domestic partnerships as being a correct thing. My Bible teaches against it."

The bill now awaits a House vote. Thankfully, a similar bill failed to pass there last year.

Kentuckians Outraged Over Basketball 'Kiss' Photo

A photo the Louisville Courier-Journal published following a match-up between the U of Louisville Cardinals and the U of Kentucky Wildcats caused such a fuss that a columnist yesterday was forced to publish an explanation. Some readers demanded apologies over the photo of Cardinals players Juan Palacios, left, and Jerry Smith, which some saw as a kiss. The negative reaction, the paper says, was "unprecedented."

Columnist Pam Platt writes: "Some of the comments registered by angry, offended and/or baffled readers: 'Awful,' 'an embarrassment,' 'horrible decision,' 'poor judgment,' 'distasteful,' 'a mystery' and 'shame on you.' I have to admit I was a little baffled by the response. Aren't sports the province of the ubiquitous fanny pat? Aren't players in each other's faces all the time during athletic matches? Yes and yes. So what's a little game-time hug in that universe?"

Platt explains: "Sam Upshaw Jr., who has been a photographer for 20 years, took the photo of Jerry Smith hugging Juan Palacios in the first half, after a big, emotional play that favored the Cards. In the original photo, there was more of a Kentucky player involved in the play in the frame; only his arm remains in the cropped picture that appeared in the paper...After looking at all the game photos submitted for publication and online posting, Bryan settled on the Palacios/Smith shot that was printed because the picture showed the game's top scorers and it showed them in a moment of celebration, with one congratulating the other...As for the theory floated by some readers, that this was a purposeful attempt to rile or humiliate Cards fans, it doesn't really deserve a response but [Sports editor Harry Bryan has one: We're not in the business of offending or agitating readers..."

Finally, Platt asks her readers, "What are you thinking? What is it about two athletes sharing a moment of physical and emotional closeness in the middle of a big game, in the middle of a basketball court, that puts some people off so much?"

Kentucky: Massive Crowd Packs Jefferson County Board of Education Meeting Over LGBT Workers Rights

The Board of Education of Jefferson County, which includes the city of Louisville, was met with a crowd of over 400 people last night as a debate over adding LGBT anti-discrimination protections to its policy. Eleven protections are already in place, but before last night gay, lesbian and transgender people could still be harassed and discriminated against with no accountability.

WLKY reports: "After hearing from dozens of speakers on both sides of the issue last night, the board voted 4-3 to update the policy. The close vote mirrored the feelings of those in the crowd, with both sides vowing to continue the fight. Supporters wanted the board to go further and include gender identity. But opponents argued the current policy covers every person and the change wasn't needed. The board also had the support of the Jefferson County Teachers Association." (VIDEO)

As the meeting assembled, the Courier-Journal reported: "Some came to the meeting in church vans. Opponents of the policy change held signs that read: 'Protect the Children.' Proponents of the policy change are holding signs that read: 'Fairness For All' and 'Protect All Workers.' Four JCPS security officers and four police officer contracted to help provide security are at the meeting to keep order."

In related news, at the beginning of November, Kentucky voters rejected the gay-baiting tactics of incumbent governor Ernie Fletcher and voted in Democrat Steve Beshear. Let's hope these positive signs from Kentucky are a signal of things to come throughout the country.

Kentucky Voters Not Swayed By Gay-Baiting, Elect Steve Beshear

The ugly gay-baiting going on in the Kentucky gubernatorial Race between incumbent Republican Ernie Fletcher and Democrat Steve Beshear failed to sway voters in the state.

Beshear crushed Fletcher, winning nearly 60 percent of the vote.

The Courier-Journal reports: "The election was clearly a repudiation of Fletcher, who was seriously damaged by a scandal over his administration's hiring abuses in the state merit system. Fletcher refused to testify before a grand jury, was indicted on three misdemeanor counts -- later dismissed -- and pardoned those around him who had been charged."

In the end, the only place Fletcher felt he could find support, apparently, . Good riddance.

More Robo-Calls and Biblical Scare Tactics in Kentucky Gov Race

The Kentucky gubernatorial campaign is getting even crazier. Yesterday I posted about Christian warbler Pat Boone's automated robo-calls warning voters about the "San Francisco values" of leading Democrat Steve Beshear.

Another set of robo-calls has gone out now, linking Beshear to "the homosexual lobby" and directing them to the website of The Fairness Campaign, a gay rights advocacy group that has endorsed Beshear. The calls say: "Beshear is receiving major support from out-of-state gay activists and has publicly committed to same-gender relationships, employment of more homosexuals in state government, including teachers, and support for homosexual adoption of children. "If you believe these rights are fair, please vote for Steve Beshear for governor."

One voter told the Associated Press that the calls were "the ugliest thing I've heard in an election probably in my lifetime."

Incumbent governor Ernie Fletcher, trailing Beshear in the calls, denies having anything to do with them.

The Lexington Herald-Leader reports: "Beshear is 'far left of Kentucky values,' Fletcher said at a brief news conference at Blue Grass Airport. Fletcher ran down a list of issues important to social conservatives, including abortion, gay marriage and casinos, which he opposes, and posting the Ten Commandments in public buildings, which he supports. His campaign later challenged Beshear to explain his views on gay marriage, which is unconstitutional in Kentucky."

While the source of the calls remains a mystery, Fletcher's desperation is obvious. Yesterday, he ordered the Ten Commandments be put on display in the Capitol Rotunda, a move he said had nothing to do with the election.

Pat Boone Helms Homophobic Robo-calls in Kentucky Governor Race

The gubernatorial race in Kentucky between Ernie Fletcher and Steve Beshear is heading into its final days. Beshear has a double-digit lead in the polls and it appears the state GOP is pulling out its biggest fear tactic in the eleventh hour — gays. They've paid for two robo-calls voiced by Christian warbler Pat Boone to go out to voters in the state warning them about Beshear's positions on gay rights.

The first ad warns: "His opponent is so ultra-liberal he’s just been enthusiastically endorsed by C-FAIR, a prominent gay rights advocacy group. They’re convinced Beshear is their guy. Now you have to ask, 'Do you really want Kentucky to become another San Francisco?' Please re-elect Ernie Fletcher."

And here's what the second, longer spot has to say:

"Hello friends. This is Pat Boone - a fellow Kentuckian by descent from granddaddy Dan'l. I've always been proud of Kentucky's stance on patriotic, military and moral issues - a great heritage. Now, as an American and a Christian I'm very concerned about the upcoming governor's election. Ernie Fletcher is a typical Kentuckian. He's worked long and hard for the state, its people, and its traditions. And of course he's come under attack by political opponents. And now, he faces a man who wants his job, who has consistently supported every homosexual cause - same-sex marriage, gay adoption, special rights to gay, lesbian, bisexual even transgender individuals. The prominent gay advocacy group CFAIR just enthusiastically endorsed Beshear, knowing he's their guy. Kentuckians have already voted to amend the state constitution to prohibit same-sex marriage. Now, do you want a governor who would like Kentucky to be another San Francisco? Please re-elect Ernie Fletcher. This message paid for by the Republican Party of Kentucky."

Gay Sex and Game-Fixing Alleged in Book on '62 Kentucky Football

A new book on the 1962 University of Kentucky Wildcats football team which contends that a game between UK and rivals Xavier University was fixed is stirring up controversy over its gambling allegations. The author's game-fixing claims, which are being disputed by players and the wife of the head coach at the time, were formed around an investigation which unearthed a less-disputed tale of local parties with Hollywood guests, most notably Rock Hudson, at which players would perform sex acts for money.

The Lexington Herald Leader reports: "According to [author Shannon] Ragland's account, some UK players in the early 1960s became involved with two gay men who had moved to Lexington around 1959. The two men were luring players to their Lakewood Drive residence with offers of free food, alcohol and parties even before Bradshaw became coach, the book says. Eventually, according to Ragland, some players submitted to gay oral sex in exchange for money, receiving $200 or more for each act. At some point, Ragland writes, movie star Rock Hudson became involved through his friendship with one of the party hosts. (Hudson died of complications from AIDS in 1985.) Ragland contends that the players involved probably didn't view themselves as taking part in gay sex. Rather, he says, they felt they were 'gaming' the situation. 'It was like, 'I'm getting paid for doing this? I'm putting something over on them,' Ragland said. 'Most of these guys were from rural areas and modest backgrounds. They had no real concept of homosexuality.' Kay Collier McLaughlin, whose father, Blanton Collier, preceded Bradshaw as coach at UK, says Ragland's account rings true. McLaughlin said a UK player told her about the Rock Hudson connection shortly before her father left UK, noting that she alluded to the gay-sex situation in her own 1985 book about her father. McLaughlin said she has 'reservations' about Ragland's game-fixing suggestion, 'But I don't have any doubts about the Rock Hudson stuff.'"

Ragland alleges that because of these parties "boys...were in a position to be bought" either for the want of cash or due to threat of blackmail.

Kentucky court rules that high school student can "pursue nominal damages" from his school district over anti-harassment training given to students: "The U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled 2-1 that the Boyd County school district's policy provided a 'chill' on student Timothy Allen Morrison's ability to profess his Christian beliefs and opposition to homosexuality. The ruling sends the case back to U.S. District Judge David Bunning for a hearing on damages. Judge Karen Nelson Moore, joined by Judge John R. Adams, wrote that the allegation of a policy stifling free speech is enough to allow Morrison to seek damages. To make his case, the judges said, Morrison must show that the policy would 'deter a person of ordinary firmness' from exercising free speech rights. Joel Oster, an attorney for the Alliance Defense Fund, a Scottsdale, Ariz., Christian law group that represented Morrison, said the ruling has left him 'ecstatic.'...'It's everything we could have hoped for,' Oster said. 'This vindicates our client's constitutional rights.'"

Journal of Urban Health STUDY: 1 in 3 gay men report being abused in a relationship. "The study is published in the most recent edition of the Journal of Urban Health. McKirnan and graduate student Eric Houston studied surveys filled out by 817 men through the Howard Brown Health Center, which primarily serves the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community from its North Side (Chicago) location. More than 32 percent of the men reported experiencing verbal, physical or sexual abuse in an intimate relationship. Just under 20 percent said they were physically or sexually abused. As with women, poorly educated and low-income men were more likely to be victims. However, minorities did not show higher rates of abuse."
