Dr. Laura Signs Deal for Satellite Radio Show with Sirius XM

Drlaura

Dr. Laura Schlessinger, who said she was giving up radio back in August after her much-publicized N-word rant, has signed a deal with Sirius XM (which has previously broadcast a syndicated version of her terrestrial radio show), according to an AP report, published prematurely.

The HuffPost reports:

"Schlessinger will begin on Sirius XM on January 3, just three days after signing off from terrestrial radio."

Said Schlessinger in August: "Well, I'm here to say that my contract is up for my radio show at the end of the year and I have made the decision not to do radio anymore. The reason is: I want to regain my First Amendment rights. I want to be able to say what's on my mind, and in my heart, what I think is helpful and useful without somebody getting angry, some special interest group deciding this is a time to silence a voice of dissent, and attack affiliates and attack sponsors...I'm sort of done with that. I'm not retiring. I'm not quitting. I feel energized actually, stronger and freer to say the things that I believe need to be said for people in this country...I write books. I have blogs. I have my Web site...This is the area -- this is the era of the Internet."

According to the report, Schlessinger's new show will be three hours long, broadcast daily.

Dr. Laura Has Dinner with Her Black and Gay Friends

Drlaura

The Hollywood Reporter asks Dr. Laura if "she's been out in public" following her announcement she's ending her radio show following controversy over her use of the N-word on the air. She has been out to dinner, in fact, with her Black and gay friends.

"I went out to dinner with three friends after Larry King. One of my friends who is gay is sitting there with another friend who is black, and he looks up and says, 'I wonder what the media would do with this? You're with a black guy and a gay guy.' We laughed, because we all understand what this is really about -- censoring a point of view."

The Hollywood Reporter also asked Schlessinger about her remarks years back calling homosexuality a "biological error", and her position on same-sex marriage (she's against it).

THR: The comment about homosexuality being a "biological error"?

Schlessinger: I never called anybody a biological error. What I said, very clearly -- and to GLAAD's credit they put it on their website -- I said, gays and lesbians have as much compassion, intelligence, ability, warmth as anybody else -- comma -- the inability to sexually match up male and female is a biological error. That's it. I didn't say people were a biological error. I said male parts and female parts make babies. I was talking biologically. The interesting thing is that gay groups have made the point that it's not a moral issue, it's a biological issue. I was really supporting their point of view.

THR: Can you sum up your position on same-sex marriage?

Schlessinger: I'm pretty traditional. I also believe men should pay for dates. That a man and a man, or a woman and a woman, can have a loving, healthy relationship is positive for society and for them individually. We're human creatures that need bonding. I just feel marriage is a sacred situation between a man and a woman. But I'm all for domestic partnerships. I had a gay caller the other day. The woman was complaining that the woman she was living with was spending money without telling her. I asked, "Do you have a domestic partnership?" She said no. And I said, "She doesn't owe it to you to tell her where her money is going. Until you two have a committed, domestic partnership, hey, you're just two single people." So I deal with these issues the exact same way with straights or gays.

John Roberts talked to Dr. Laura on AC360 last night, as well as "Jade", the caller to her radio show who confronted her about using the N-word.

Watch: Dr. Laura Says She is Ending Her Radio Show

Drlaura

Dr. Laura Schlessinger told Larry King last night that condemnations following her use of the N-word 11 times on her radio show last week have made her decide to end the show:

"Well, I'm here to say that my contract is up for my radio show at the end of the year and I have made the decision not to do radio anymore. The NYT adds:

In 2000, a coalition of gay activists launched a Web site, StopDrLaura.com, and organized protests and boycotts across the United States and Canada in response to her comments about homosexuality, which she referred to as a 'biological error.' They were also angered by her outspoken stance against adoption by same-sex couples, and remarks in which she said that a 'a huge portion of the male homosexual populace is predatory on young boys.' Dr. Schlessinger apologized for many of her comments, but many of her advertisers left her radio show, and a television show she started in 2000 was ended a year later. On the Web site StopDrLaura.com Tuesday night, a headline at the top of the home page declared, 'We Stopped Dr Laura.'”

Listen: Dr. Laura Schlessinger's N-Word Rant

Dr. Laura Schlessinger had a colorful exchange with a Black caller yesterday on her show. The caller was complaining about her White husband's racist friends and their use of the N-word. Here's some of it:

Drlaura

CALLER: Is it OK to say that word? Is it ever OK to say that word?
DR. LAURA: It depends how it's said. Black guys talking to each other seem to think it's ok.
CALLER: But you're not black, they're not black, my husband is white.
DR. LAURA: Oh, I see, so a word is restricted to race. Got it. Can't do much about that.
CALLER: I can't believe someone like you is on the radio spewing out the n***** word, and I hope everybody heard it.
DR. LAURA: I didn't spew out the n***** word!
CALLER: You said "n*****, n*****, n*****" and I hope everybody heard it.
DR. LAURA: Yes they did, and I'll say it again: n*****, n*****, n***** is what you hear on HBO.
[Crosstalk]
DR. LAURA: Why don't you let me finish a sentence? Don't take things out of context. Don't NAACP me, leave them in context. "If you're that hypersensitive about color and don't have a sense of humor, don't marry outside of your race,"

Said Schlessinger, in an apology: "These are my opening comments from my radio program today: I talk every day about doing the right thing. And yesterday, I did the wrong thing. I didn’t intend to hurt people, but I did. And that makes it the wrong thing to have done. I was attempting to make a philosophical point, and I articulated the “n” word all the way out - more than one time. And that was wrong. I’ll say it again - that was wrong. I ended up, I’m sure, with many of you losing the point I was trying to make, because you were shocked by the fact that I said the word. I, myself, realized I had made a horrible mistake, and was so upset I could not finish the show. I pulled myself off the air at the end of the hour. I had to finish the hour, because 20 minutes of dead air doesn’t work. I am very sorry. And it just won’t happen again."
