Lea DeLaria Speaks Out About Facing Down Subway Preacher: 'You Must Always Face Evil...'

2_delaria

Earlier this week, a video in which Orange is the New Black actress Lea DeLaria shouted down a Bible-beating preacher on the NYC subway went viral.

DeLaria spoke to Page Six about the incident, and why she stood up and got in his face:

“I really can’t tolerate anyone who uses the name of Jesus to preach hatred. When he literally used the word ‘homo,’ I decided to get up. I have no problem with people talking out loud on the subway. I think that freedom of speech comes with responsibility. You should not, you cannot spew that kind of hatred out loud — especially in New York City, a multicultural and -religious city that we live in....You must always face evil and take it down. The reason evil thrives in the world, the reason hatred thrives in the world, the reason bullying thrives in the world is because of complacency. As long as we continue to take it, it will continue to thrive."

Preach.

A street preacher yammering away on the NYC subway got more than he bargained for on Tuesday morning when Orange is the New Black's Lea DeLaria got on his car, TMZ reports.

DeLaria, a longtime out and proud comedienne and jazz musician who plays Big Boo on the Netflix series, was not having any of his Biblical nonsense and got right in his face as he pulled out a line about Sodom and Gomorrah and then called her a "dyke".

"Now he's called me a dyke, everybody," DeLaria screams. "That's what's going on. It's because of my homosexuality."

Conan O'Brien devoted his entire show last night to Orange is the New Black, inviting seven members of its cast to their first-ever group late night appearance.

Laverne Cox opened the show, which was attended by a group of actual hardened criminals, by discussing a makeover for Conan. Taylor Schilling and Uzo Aduba talked about their crazy fight scene, and Aduba taught Conan to make crazy eyes. Kate Mulgrew says Conan once almost ruined her career by forcing her to perform an Irish jig. Cox talked about her TIME magazine cover, giving trans people a voice, and her brother who is sometimes mistaken for her. Finally, Lea Delaria explains how she taught Natasha Lyonne about lesbian sex.

Lea DeLaria: We Cannot Forget 'Butch Dykes and Nelly Faggots.'

Tumblr_mrye7bdWdk1sczcnno1_400

To Lea DeLaria Orange Is the New Black’s Big Boo is more than just one of the first “three-dimensional butch dykes” she’s had the chance to play. She’s a symbol of LGBTQ history:

“We cannot forget where we came from.” DeLaria told Buzzfeed in an interview. “We cannot forget our history. And butch dykes and nelly faggots, that’s where we came from.”

DeLaria sees her personal experiences with fans as a testament of the show’s progressive impact on audiences:

[T]eenage boys come up to me on the street and want to get their pictures taken with me, want to give me a hug, tell me that Big Boo’s their favorite character. That means a lot to me. Because I’m winning the hearts and minds of people that are young and are going to grow up and control the world.”

DeLaria, you may not know, is also an accomplished jazz singer.
