News: Tobey Maguire, Darth Vader, Cayman Islands, Jamaica
Extremely disturbing images of another brutal anti-gay mob attack in Jamaica. Sick.

Tobey Maguire's mom on her son's friendship with Leonardo DiCaprio: "I figured this subject would come up sooner or later . . . Those two are just free-spirited guys. Most of the friends they hang around with are gay. They're comfortable with that. But I think Leo and Tobey are the crossover between men and women. They have feminine traits they are willing to accept. They aren't ashamed to have any sort of title, even if that means someone calling them gay."
Jason West, who performed public ceremonies for two dozen same-sex marriages in 2004, lost his re-election bid yesterday: "Mr. West was defeated by a village trustee, Terry Dungan, in a 514-to-379 vote, according to unofficial results announced shortly after the polls closed. Mr. West had been charged with 24 misdemeanor counts of violating the state’s domestic relations law when he performed public marriage ceremonies for two dozen gay and lesbian couples in February 2004. The Ulster County district attorney later dropped the charges, saying that a trial would be needless and divisive."

Bush warns that Democrats could turn Iraq into terrorist breeding ground.
Philippe Starck lays his hands on a New York luxury condominium: Gramercy by Starck. "As we gazed at Philippe Starck's head emerging from the top of the building on a plasma screen, we wondered if the people who desire to buy into Starck's rich boy minimalism really want to live on a nothing-special stretch of East 23rd Street?"

Micron Technology Inc., whom I posted about last week, has added sexual orientation to its nondiscrimination policies: "The move comes after The Advocate revealed last week that the Boise, Idaho, company’s board of directors had ignored an unprecedented 55 percent shareholder vote in favor of adding both sexual orientation and gender identity to its nondiscrimination policies."
The Netherlands' recent court order that its territory Aruba recognize same-sex marriages has rekindled a gay rights debate in the Cayman Islands: "'We either fight the FCO, UK for self-determination on this issue of homosexual marriage or in short order we will face the same situation here in the Cayman Islands,' the People for Referendum said in a press release. 'Either we exercise our UN mandated inalienable self-determination rights to ensure the Constitution does not allow homosexual marriage or acknowledge and let our people know the fact that it’s not a matter of if homosexual marriage will become legal in our Cayman Islands by the UK’s Order in Council.'"

DiCaprio and Damon Let it All Hang Out

From a Worth 1000 photoshop contest in which entrants were asked to design a movie poster with a one-letter typo in the movie's title. Some interesting results...

Leonardo DiCaprio Working with Icebergs Again

Leonardo DiCaprio is back on the ice for the "Green Issue" of Vanity Fair. This time his co-star is not Kate Winslet but Knut, the Berlin Zoo's born-in-captivity polar bear cub. The last time we saw DiCaprio clinging to an iceberg the situation was Hollywood from an entirely fictional perspective. Icebergs have driven DiCaprio's career, onscreen and off.

The Annie Leibowitz shoot did have its bit of Hollywood "magic". While DiCaprio was shot at the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, in southeast Iceland, Knut was shot against a green screen in Berlin and inserted into the image.
Knut has become an international star and symbol for the plight of polar bears since his public debut on March 23, with much credit to YouTube.
I just hope that with all the glamming up of global warming, the message doesn't become lost in the trendy landscape. But if this is the only way it's going to grab the public's attention, I'm all for it.

News: Chris Richardson, Michael Stipe, Wyoming, Episcopalians
Lesbian couple denied communion in Wyoming because they publicly opposed a bill that would have barred the state from recognizing out-of-state same-sex marriages: "Leah Vader and Lynne Huskinson have attended Saint Matthew's Catholic Church since 1998, and were married two years ago in Canada. Earlier this year, when the Legislature considered a bill that would have barred Wyoming from recognizing such marriages, the two said the bill amounted to discrimination. Last week, they got a letter from the Reverend Cliff Jacobson of Saint Matthew's, telling them they can no longer receive communion, in part because of their public position."

Michael Stipe was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame last night. EW celebrates Stipe's many looks over the years.

Episcopal minister in gay marriage protest. Rev. Robert Hirschfeld, rector of Grace Episcopal Church in Amherst, Massachusetts, says he'll stop performing all marriage ceremonies to protest the denomination's stance against same-sex unions. Said Nina Scott, a congregant: "I'm so proud to be a part of this. It's a step that needs to be taken."
Leonardo DiCaprio's arrival in Israel inspires near riots.
Whitney Houston begins work on comeback album.
Amid criticism from "pro-family" and religious groups, the largest school district in Indiana is ready to adopt broad rights and protections for its gay and lesbian employees. Superintendent Eu gene White: "They're not living in reality. If we do know people are gay, we want to make sure we extend to them the same freedoms and liberties we give to everyone else. We wanted to be more inclusive."

Bill to ban gay adoption and foster parenting advances in Arkansas: "Testifying before the committee Monday, former foster child Barbara Miles of Little Rock said the bill puts political considerations ahead of the needs of children and further reduces the chances for a home, paternal love and stability for those children. 'I had 10 different foster parents (none of whom were gay) in three different states before I was adopted at age 10,' Miles said in an interview after the meeting. 'What got me through that was that I was able to find and establish relationships with a few people who showed me unconditional love and care. To deny a child a family because politics eliminates an entire category of people is inappropriate.'"

The Departed: Leonardo and Scorcese's Cinematic Language
Leonard Dicaprio bulks up in The Departed...
I haven't seen the lastest Scorcese flick yet but I've seen lots of great reviews. Anyway, received this in my email the other day.
A reader writes in:
"I saw 'The Departed' this weekend and was surprised to see that Scorcese uses the words 'nigger', 'fucking homos', 'fucking queers' and 'two-faced faggot' at face value. The movie is arbitrarily set in Boston because Scorcese cannot do one more movie about the NY Mafia, so this is set in some fantasy world of Irish-American organized crime. The slurs are used unneccessarily by the three main characters, including Leonardo, who plays the hero of the movie.
Considering that this is not one of Scorcese's period pieces, and that the entire plot is way outside the realm of plausibilty, it seems strange to inlcude these words when the movie is so plainly unrealistic (It gets downright satirical by the end). It is not as though Scorcese was making a thoughtful film about cultural differences, although he hints that the movie will be about that during the beginning. Anyway, nobody on the internet or the in the press has said anything. I think someone should say something."
Since I haven't yet seen the film, I can't really comment, but if anyone out there who has would like to offer some insight, please feel free to do so in the comments...
