Fred Karger Files Complaint Against NOM with California Fair Political Practices Commission Over Romney Donation

M_gallagher

Republican presidential candidate Fred Karger, who has been tracking the National Organization for Marriage's finances and attempts to seal away their donors from the light of day for years, has filed a complaint with the California Fair Political Practices Commission regarding the recent revelations that they tried to sneak a donation from Mitt Romney through an obscure Alabama PAC.

Writes Karger: Karger

Recently unsealed documents by a federal judge from the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) indicate possible illegal campaign activities by the National Organization for Marriage in California.  It appears that NOM attempted to hide a $10,000 contribution from Governor Mitt Romney in 2008.

NOM, acting via “National Organization for Marriage California – Yes on 8, Sponsored by National Organization for Marriage” is a primarily formed recipient committee that supported Proposition 8 in 2008.  As a primarily formed recipient committee, NOM is required to report all receipts and disbursements...

...NOM did not report that contribution on any of its filings with the California Secretary of State in 2008 or 2009.   Contributions larger and smaller received by NOM earlier and later in October 2008 appear to all be reported, but the Romney PAC contribution was not.  There is also no record of NOM filing the mandatory 90-day election cycle report triggered by Governor Romney’s PAC contribution...

...It appears that the National Organization for Marriage attempted to hide the Romney PAC contribution because of the significant attention that it would have received.

I hereby request that the California Fair Political Practices Commission investigate this irregularity to determine if the National Organization for Marriage conspired with Governor Romney’s Alabama Free and Strong America PAC to hide his $10,000 contribution to its Yes on Proposition 8 Campaign.

Recently, NOM President Brian Brown has been bleating that NOM is the victim of a Watergate-style criminal act by HRC and an insider at the IRS, who released their tax returns without authorization.

Maggie Gallagher has been repeating the accusations. Watch her discuss it with Bruce DePuyt on NewsTalk, AFTER THE JUMP...

Maggie Gallagher: Whether I'm Married or Not is Irrelevant

Yesterday Republican presidential candidate and NOM investigator Fred Karger sent out an email speculating that 'marriage defender' Maggie Gallagher may not actually be married because she never wears a wedding ring in public or appears with her husband Roman Srivastav.

Maggie_gallagherGallagher spoke to Buzzfeed about Karger's accusations:

Gallagher laughed when asked about Karger's speculation, and said "I think I would know better than Fred."

Gallagher, who was a single mother for years after college, says she married her husband Raman Srivastav in Arizona in 1993: "We are still married and living together. He's a very private person."

"They just make up all kind of stuff about me," she said. "It doesn't really matter. I could be divorced and I still could not be for gay marriage. I don't really see that it's relevant. It is a fact — I am in fact married. I've only been married once. I am not about to get a divorce."

Said Karger, who has been pursuing NOM's corrupt election finances and tactics for years: "I'm taking the gloves off. I've been a little reticent to go after [Gallagher] personally, but no more."

Maggie Gallagher MIA for MSNBC NOM Document Segment: VIDEO

Gallagherchair

MSNBC's Thomas Roberts did a segment this morning on the damaging NOM document dump with Truth Wins Out's Wayne Besen and NOM's Maggie Gallagher, but Gallagher was not present when it began even though she confirmed an hour beforehand, so Roberts just showed an empty chair, Equality Matters reports.

Roberts_besenSaid Roberts:

"This empty studio chair in Seattle was supposed to hold Maggie Gallagher...although she is missing in action...I would say 'hi Maggie', but you're not there!"

Roberts went on to discuss the documents with Besen and the race-baiting done by NOM. Gallagher was not there to spout off in their defense.

Watch, AFTER THE JUMP...

UPDATE: Roberts tweets to us, "Maggie was booked in the wrong studio. She will be back. Our mistake."

NOM Strategies Revealed: Document Dump Exposes Tactics of Racial Division, Victimhood, Attacking Obama

The documents the National Organization for Marriage fought long and hard to keep sealed in Maine were unsealed yesterday as part of investigations into the group's finances, and published late yesterday by HRC's 'NOM Exposed' campaign.

Read the full documents, AFTER THE JUMP...

Nom_maineThe documents reveal that what pro-equality activists suspected about NOM's state-by-state and national strategies were correct all along - that the group works to sow racial division, paint liberals (and the President) as radicals, and collect evidence for memes that can construct a storyline that anti-gay activists and Christians are victims.

Said HRC President Joe Solmonese: “Nothing beats hearing from the horse’s mouth exactly how callous and extremist this group really is. Such brutal honesty is a game changer, and this time NOM can’t spin and twist its way out of creating an imagined rift between LGBT people and African-Americans or Hispanics.”

In their own words:

A few key passages - on dividing gays and Blacks (Exhibit 28, p. 12):

The strategic goal of this project is to drive a wedge between gays and blacks — two key Democratic constituencies. We aim to find, equip, energize and connect African-American spokespeople for marriage; to develop a media campaign around their objections to gay marriage as a civil right; and to provoke the gay marriage base into responding by denouncing these spokesmen and women as bigots.

The Latino strategy (12/15/09 p. 20):

The Latino vote in America is a key swing vote, and will be even more so in the future because of demographic growth. Will the process of assimilation to the dominant Anglo culture lead Hispanics to abandon traditional family values? We must interrupt this process of assimilation by making support for marriage a key badge of Latino identity.

We aim to identify young Latino and Latina leaders, especially artists, actors, musicians, athletes, writers and other celebrities willing to stand for marriage, regardless of national boundaries. …Here’s our insight: The number of “glamorous” people willing to buck the powerful forces to speak for marriage may be small in any one country. But by searching for these leaders across national boundaries we will assemble a community of next generation Latino leaders that Hispanics and other next generation elites in this country can aspire to be like. (As “ethnic rebels” such spokespeople will also have an appeal across racial lines, especially to young urbans in America.)

With the help of Schubert Flint Public Affairs, we will develop Spanish language radio and TV ads, as well as pamphlets, YouTube videos, and church handouts and popular songs. Our ultimate goal is the make opposition to gay marriage an identity marker, a badge of youth rebellion to conforming assimilation to the bad side of “Anglo” culture.

NOM also pushed its victim meme (Behind Enemy Lines p. 24):

Document the consequences of gay marriage and develop an effective culture of resistance. … Fund a low-cost media campaign (primarily billboards) to support the idea the children need mothers and fathers and to highlight threats and promise support to any citizens attacked for their pro-marriage views; commission polling and other studies to document consequences of gay marriage; and gather a rapid-response team of videographers and reporters to collect and record stories of those who have been harassed, threatened, or intimidated as a result of their support for traditional views on marriage and sexuality across the country and also in Europe and abroad.

Also another passage (8.11.09) discusses a $1 million plan run through the conservative American Principles Project:

Expose Obama as a social radical. Develop side issues to weaken pro-gay marriage political leaders and parties and develop an activist hase of socially conservative voters. Raise such issues as pornography, protection of children, and the need to oppose all efforts to weaken religious liberty at the federal level.
