Bill O'Reilly Attacks Columnist Who Called Him Out for Homophobic Ambush of Gay Colorado House Speaker: VIDEO

Oreilly_hubbard

Last week, I posted about some ugly trolling by The O'Reilly Factor of openly gay Colorado House Speaker Mark Ferrandino. O'Reilly's Jesse Watters ambushed Ferrandino and questioned his opposition to "Jessica’s Law", which imposes excessive mandatory sentences for first-time offenders of child molesters, yet the segment seemed to link Ferrandino's sexuality and support for gay marriage to his lack of opposition to such predators.

Denver Post columnist Curtis Hubbard called him on it, and O'Reilly had him on the show last night.

"You've got a nerve calling me a homophobe," O'Reilly ranted, before accusing Hubbard of being a "disgraceful...smear merchant" and a "charlatan".

'O'Reilly Factor' Ambushes Gay Colorado House Speaker, Says He's 'Not Protecting Kids from Child Predators': VIDEO

Ferrandino

Check out this ugly trolling by The O'Reilly Factor of openly gay Colorado House Speaker Mark Ferrandino. O'Reilly's Jesse Watters questions Ferrandino's opposition to "Jessica’s Law", which imposes excessive mandatory sentences for first-time offenders of child molesters.

Ferrandino explains that his opposition is because Colorado's laws "are tougher than Jessica's law" but O'Reilly's segment seems more interested in suggesting that Ferrandino is aiding and abetting child molesters, Think Progress reports. Following the ambush, O'Reilly also notes that Ferrandino is “a big gay marriage guy… big marijuana legalizer.”

Colorado Democrats Select Mark Ferrandino As State's First Openly Gay Speaker

FerrandinoWith big wins in the State House on Tuesday, Colorado Democrats won the power to pick the assembly's next speaker and announced today that they've selected openly gay lawmaker Mark Ferrandino.

Ferrandino is the state's first out and proud House Speaker and will lead 36 party peers as they work with 28 of their GOP colleagues to run the state.

Ferrandino got a bit teary during his acceptance speech, in which he spoke about being bullied while growing up in New York. "

"As a kid growing up in New York who had a learning disability and just struggled a lot, was picked on and called names, to be where I am and to have your support to do that, it’s awesome, it’s humbling," he said, according to KDVR. "I couldn’t dream when I was in elementary school and high school that I’d be doing this."

Ferrandino's ascension is especially powerful because it was just six months ago that the GOP squashed a popular domestic partnership bill he helped create.

AFTER THE JUMP, KDVR reporter Eli Stokols' conversation with Ferrandino from yesterday, after Democrats took back control of the Colorado State House and it became clear Ferrandino would be named Speaker.

Out Gay Lawmaker Elected Minority Leader of Colorado House

Out gay Colorado State Representative Mark Ferrandino has been elected to the position of House Minority Leader, the Victory Fund reports, adding that "he could become House Speaker if the chamber flips back to Democratic control next year."

FerrandinoBrad Clark, the Executive Director of One Colorado, released a statement following Ferrandino's election:

“When openly LGBT people are elected, the face of politics is changed.  By speaking honestly about their lives and their families, they are giving voice to our community and bravely serving as champions for equality. Representative Ferrandino has been a tremendous voice at the Capitol for the LGBT community. He succesfully sponsored a bill to grant domestic partner benefits to state employees, and he garnered significant support for a civil unions bill that was blocked from a floor vote. During the civil unions debate, Representative Ferrandino spoke openly about his partner and about his family’s hopes of starting a family. Because of his courage and willingness to publicly share his life, countless Coloradans feel connected to gay and lesbian families in their own neighborhoods. Representative Ferrandino hasn’t just been a champion for the LGBT community; he has also been an incredible leader for the people of House District 2. As a respected member of the powerful Joint Budget Committee and the Ranking Member of the House Appropriations Committee, Representative Ferrandino has been applauded for his keen understanding of fiscal matters and his sharp political mind. Without a doubt, openly LGBT lawmakers like Representative Mark Ferrandino are instrumental in creating a government and a world that is more fair and just.”

Colorado Gets First Openly Gay Male State Legislator

Rep. Mike Cerbo (D-Denver) resigned from his seat in the state legislature last week to become head of the Colorado AFL-CIO. He was replaced this week by Mark Ferrandino, treasurer of the Colorado Democratic Party and former co-chairman of the Colorado Stonewall Democrats.

Ferrandino"A vacancy committee of party activists and local elected Democrats voted 23-3 in favor of the 30-year-old fiscal policy wonk at a meeting Wednesday night," the Rocky Mountain News reports.

Said Ferrandino: "I'm proud to be representing my constituents and the GLBT community. I'm a qualified Democrat who wants to do good, who also happens to be gay...I want to make life better for the people of the state of Colorado."

Colorado does have a state lawmaker who is a lesbian — Jennifer Veiga (D-Denver) was elected to the House in 1996.
