RNC Chair Michael Steele: If Prop 8 is Struck Down, the GOP Will Form 'Strong Front Line' to Stop Same-Sex Marriage

The National Organization for Marriage (NOM) posted a lengthy interview with Republican Party chair Michael Steele about his personal philosophies and the party's strategy for fighting same-sex marriage over the next two years.

Steele, who insists banning same-sex marriage around the country is not something that's "anti-gay", says the GOP will work hard at the state level to stop same-sex marriage initiatives [my transcript]:

"For us, going forward, we'll look to the leadership in Washington for any legislative or federal efforts to address the issue of marriage, between man and woman, traditional marriage. But also especially at the state level where I think the battle is really going to be fought over the next couple years, and we want to be in partnership through our state party organizations working with state legislative leadership to stand firmly and squarely behind the defense of marriage.

NOM's Frank Cannon asks Steel, "If the federal courts were to strike down the California law and discover a federal right to gay marriage, in essence, would you fully stand behind the Republican platform's call for federal marriage amendment?"

[my transcript]

Says Steele: "Oh, absolutely. Without hesitation or doubt. In fact we would partner with our leadership in the House and our governors and leadership in the state legislatures to create a very very strong front line if you will, on that issue. I can't again stress how important that is for how we will lead as a people, and how we will see ourselves as a nation. And again, that is not to the exclusion of anyone, it's not anti- anyone, or any group. It's just so fundamental and foundational, I think it needs to be protected."

HRC Calls on Michael Steele to Repudiate Texas GOP Platform

On Monday I posted about the Texas GOP's Platform, which had been revealed by a diarist at Daily Kos and included criminalizing sodomy and throwing anyone who issues a marriage license to a same-sex couple (even though such licenses are not valid in the state) into jail.

Gop_texas  Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese sent out a mass email yesterday calling on RNC Chair Michael Steele to repudiate the platform.

Wrote HRC:

At a time when Americans are looking for real solutions to the challenges we face, the Texas GOP decided to focus on propaganda, not policy:

"Homosexuality tears at the fabric of society, contributes to the breakdown of the family unit, and leads to the spread of dangerous, communicable diseases."

"Homosexuality must not be presented as an acceptable 'alternative' lifestyle in our public education and policy, nor should 'family' be redefined to include homosexual 'couples.'"

"We oppose the recognition of and granting of benefits to people who represent themselves as domestic partners without being legally married."

They're not just against marriage equality; they're against basic equal rights. They think it should be 100% legal to fire someone for being lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT). Even their word choice shows a possible anti-transgender bias, using the phrases "natural man" and "natural woman." The list goes on – far beyond the usual Republican talking points on "traditional family values" and even the GOP platforms in other conservative states.

And they don't stop with attacking LGBT citizens. They also call for evicting the United Nations from the U.S., requiring drivers' licenses to indicate citizenship, opposing legislation to allow stem cell research, rescinding no-fault divorce laws, reversing Roe v. Wade, and shutting down the U.S. Department of Education.

HRC's petition is here.

Says Maddow: "I think there's no way Michael Steele survives this."

Watch: Rachel Maddow Looks at RNC's Visit to 'Lesbian' Strip Club

Rachel Maddow takes a look at the GOP expense reports detailing a Republican consultant's trip to the strip club Voyeur, where women put on 'lesbian' bondage sex acts, and the party's pushback that chairman Michael Steele didn't personally attend the show.

In related news, the staffer has been fired.

RNC Chair Michael Steele Runs Tab at Lesbian Bondage Strip Club

Republican National Committee Chair Michael Steele's expenses have come under review, based on some recent FEC filings

Steele "The RNC explains that Steele charters jets only when commercial service is unavailable, or when his tight schedule requires it. “Anytime the chairman has taken any private travel has been a either to a route that doesn’t exist or because of connections and multiple travel to where he just wasn’t able to do so,” Heye said. Yet Steele’s office repeatedly refused to explain in specific terms the circumstances of the February charter flights. Once on the ground, FEC filings suggest, Steele travels in style. A February RNC trip to California, for example, included a $9,099 stop at the Beverly Hills Hotel, $6,596 dropped at the nearby Four Seasons, and $1,620.71 spent [update: the amount is actually $1,946.25] at Voyeur West Hollywood, a bondage-themed nightclub featuring topless women dancers imitating lesbian sex."
