Michelle Shocked Tells Piers Morgan She's Not Homophobic, Audience Couldn't Accept Her 'Reality': VIDEO

Morgan_shocked

Singer Michelle Shocked joined Piers Morgan last night for her first interview since her "God hates fags" rant which caused cancelation of her entire tour.

ShockedMorgan asked her about the rant, and she gave a (surprise) nonsensical response:

"I admit I made a mistake, Piers. If I had the chance to do it again, I don’t think I would have taken the audience up on their choice. I had presented an entire performance, and I framed it as ‘truth,’ and then I came out back for an encore, and they requested ‘reality.’ What has consequently taken place ever since then is my manifestation of how little I think of reality. I know that it’s a stock in trade for a lot of the media to present things like that’s how it really is. But I don’t think the audience was ready for the consequences of that, and I surely have not been happy with it.”

Later Morgan asked her if she is homophobic and she began giving a dumb explanation that somehow her words would have meant something else if the whole thing hadn't been recorded:

"On the surface it sounds really bad. It's not really a point worth making but the show is supposed to be live, not recorded...To me, it's an important difference but I don't think I have time to go into it right now."

Then, pressed:

"If you want to keep this simple for the audience, let me just give you a straight, 'no, I'm not homophobic'."

Michelle Shocked Stages Masked, Gagged Sit-In at Santa Cruz Venue That Canceled Her Show: VIDEO

Sc_shocked

Michelle Shocked showed up to Moe's Alley in Santa Cruz, which canceled her show over her anti-gay rant. She wore a mask over her head, tape over her mouth, and taped several hastily scrawled signs to the wall before sitting down on the cement and strumming her guitar.

Silenced_shockedThe Santa Cruz Sentinel reports:

The tape across her mouth said "Silenced By Fear." When asked a question, Shocked shook her head vigorously and strummed her guitar while seated on the ground outside popular music venue Moe's Alley. She pointed to a sign inviting people to pick up a Sharpie marker and write on the white disposable safety suit she was wearing.

Earlier in the day, she had tweeted her plans: "Moe's in S Cruz tonight ok? Its an art project 'My Summer Vacation' I want your autograph. Bring Sharpie."

Moe's Alley owner Bill Welch, who talked with Shocked as she strummed her guitar outside his club, had replaced her with bands Beaver Fever and Frootie Flavors.

BTW, this is what she said about Prop 8:

"When they stop Prop 8 and force priests at gunpoint to marry gays, it will be the downfall of civilization, and Jesus will come back...You can go on Twitter and say, 'Michelle Shocked says God hates fags.'"

Michelle Shocked Said She'll Be Showing Up to Her Canceled Show Tonight; Venue Tells Her 'Don't Come'

Michele Shocked told followers on Twitter yesterday that she would show up at McCabe’s in Santa Monica despite the fact that they had announced cancelation of her show over her anti-gay remarks (listen to them HERE), according to the Hollywood Reporter:

2_shockedFriday afternoon, the beleaguered singer tweeted that she would be appearing at Saturday night at McCabe’s in Santa Monica for a “speaking engagement” on the subject of “Effects of Gay-Bashing on the L.A. Mayoral Race.”

This came as news to the club -- and not good news.

“She is not welcome at McCabe’s,” said the venue’s angry concert director, Lincoln Myerson, who had just learned about Shocked’s vow -- or threat -- to show up after he got calls regarding the singer’s mysterious tweet.

McCabe's had not heard from Shocked since they announced her show's cancelation. Neither had any of the other 10 venues which canceled.

THR adds:

“Had Michelle attempted to talk to me [about taking part in some kind of nonmusical forum], I might have attempted to work something out with her." Myerson said. "But for her to go rogue on this shows that she’s her own sheriff. If she wants to do it at the park down the street, she can do it there, but she can’t do it at McCabe’s. I’m not intending to clean up this mess for her. I wish I could get on and tweet, ‘Hey, it’s at her house -- here’s her address.'"

Asked by The Hollywood Reporter via Twitter if she intended to make her "appearance" some sort of guerrilla action, Shocked, who was arrested two years ago at an Occupy protest, responded: "OK, OCCU-PIE!!" She also retweeted a fan who said: "You mean like on the sidewalk in front of @McCabesGuitar? It doesn't get much more punk rock than that. I'm there."

The police have been alerted to a possible appearance by Shocked and/or angry activists.

Stay tuned...

Michelle Shocked Backpedals on Anti-Gay Remarks in Statement, Says She Was 'Misinterpreted': READ IT

Singer Michelle Shocked has issued a lengthy apology (in two parts), backpedaling on her anti-gay remarks at a Sunday night concert, which caused 10 of 11 venues on her current tour to cancel her show.

2_shockedSaid Shocked on Sunday:

"When they stop Prop 8 and force priests at gunpoint to marry gays, it will be the downfall of civilization, and Jesus will come back...You can go on Twitter and say, 'Michelle Shocked says God hates fags.'"

UPDATE: AUDIO has emerged of her remarks.

Here's her explanation, in two parts (via brooklyn vegan):

I do not, nor have I ever, said or believed that God hates homosexuals (or anyone else). I said that some of His followers believe that. I believe intolerance comes from fear, and these folks are genuinely scared. When I said "Twitter that Michelle Shocked says "God hates faggots," I was predicting the absurd way my description of, my apology for, the intolerant would no doubt be misinterpreted. The show was all music, and the audience tweets said they enjoyed it. The commentary came about ten minutes later, in the encore.

And to those fans who are disappointed by what they've heard or think I said, I'm very sorry: I don't always express myself as clearly as I should. But don't believe everything you read on facebook or twitter. My view of homosexualty has changed not one iota. I judge not. And my statement equating repeal of Prop 8 with the coming of the End Times was neither literal nor ironic: it was a description of how some folks - not me - feel about gay marriage.

The show, and the rant, was spontaneous. As for those applauding my so-called stance that "God Hates Faggots," I say they should be met with mercy, not hate. And I hope that what remains of my audience will meet that intolerance with understanding, even of those who might hate them.

Folks wonder about my sexuality, but denying being gay is like saying I never beat my husband. My sexuality is not at issue. What is being questioned is my support for the LGBT community, and that has never wavered. Music and activism have always been part of my work and my journey, which I hope and intend to continue. I'd like to say this was a publicity stunt, but I'm really not that clever, and I'm definitely not that cynical.

But I am damn sorry. If I could repeat the evening, I would make a clearer distinction between a set of beliefs I abhor, and my human sympathy for the folks who hold them. I say this not because I want to look better. I have no wish to hide my faults, and - clearly - I couldn't if I tried.

With love,
Michelle
