Ozzie Guillen Defends Yunel Escobar's Anti-Gay Slur: 'In My House, We [Use] That Word Every 20 Seconds'

Miami Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen, who was punished in 2006 for making an anti-gay slur about Sun-Times columnist Jay Mariotti ("What a piece of [deleted] he is, [deleted] fag.''), reacted to a similar incident by Toronto Blue Jay shortstop Yunel Escobar this week.

Marlins_guillenGuillen defended Escobar:

On Tuesday, Guillen said he didn't think Escobar meant to be offensive.

"I think he just did it for fun. I know he didn't mean to hurt anybody's feelings. Nobody is that stupid," he said before the Marlins hosted Atlanta.

"In my house, we call (each other) that word every 20 seconds. I've got three kids," Guillen said. "For us, it's like 'What's up, bro? What's up, dude?' It's how you say it and to who you say it. But that's our country. We have to respect this country. Sometimes for us it's funny, for other people it's not."

Escobar received a three-game suspension and must pay his lost salary to GLAAD and the You Can Play project. He will also undergo sensitivity training. Perhaps Guillen should join him.

The ads will appear on the subway and on pay-phone kiosks around the city. Executive Director: "This ad campaign speaks to a universal human experience, the love between a parent and a child. Our goal is to address the rising rate of LGBT youth homelessness, particularly in communities of color."

Has been under surveillance in Britain following his disappearance after the murder of Edgar Garzon in 2001: "Police said he was beaten with a hammer, his face was slammed into a hard surface, possibly the pavement, and then robbed of $10. Garzon died two weeks later, never having regained consciousness." Prosecutors may add hate crime to the charges against John McGhee, which are second-degree murder, manslaughter and attempted robbery.

'Gaywatch' is what they call it. A bartender there noted: 'They don't shout as aggressively as heterosexual fans do.'...Gays follow the action on the pitch a bit differently than straight men do, Helge noted. Among gays' favourite players, he said, are Germany's Lukas Podolski and Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal."

Roberts plays one of Lex Luthor's henchmen in Superman Returns: "Some very high calibre agents asked about me over there and that's a real buzz. That's why I am moving. What's the worst thing that can happen? At least I can come out saying `What a ride'.''

road.jpg Despite gay slur fracas, Ozzie Guillen says he'll still attend the Gay Games in Chicago. Gay Games spokesman: "We're glad to hear he'll be attending because it demonstrates how the gay games brings people together -- whether straight or gay -- through competition. There's no hurt feelings. He's apologized . . . he won't do it again. It's cool that Ozzie will be at the center of two events that unite the city. The Gay Games on one hand and the World Series on the other."

road.jpg Arkansas' high court says the state cannot ban gays from becoming foster parents, agreeing that the state's child welfare board "had improperly tried to regulate public morality." Court: "There is no correlation between the health, welfare and safety of foster children and the blanket exclusion of any individual who is a homosexual or who resides in a household with a homosexual."

Sun-Times Columnist "Disgusted" By Guillen Media Reaction

Guillen_1AfterElton has posted an interview with Greg Couch, the Sun-Times journalist who called out Ozzie Guillen for making his "f*#ing fag" slur last week. Couch talks about the incident and explains how the White Sox "masterfully" turned the discussion away from Guillen's indiscretion and toward the object of Guillen's wrath, columnist Jay Mariotti:

"They effectively used the media to turn it into an issue about Mariotti, and the media and fans went along with it. On the website for the White Sox, the media relations guy briefly writes they don't condone this language, but then talks about Mariotti!

...For several days, Kenny Williams, the general manager, disappeared. But in the past couple of days he has finally stood up and said that Ozzie didn't understand how serious this issue is. He's the only one in the White Sox not trying not to change the subject. He's handling it right. He even brought up the idea that this could lead to the end of Ozzie [with the White Sox]. He said, 'I hope I don't have to go down to his office one day and say we have to make a change.' He's the only one who has made this serious for Ozzie."

This is Ozzie's second derogatory statement about gays in the past year. Three strikes and...

Ozzie Guillen Apologizes for Gay Slur, Sort of...

Ozzie Guillen issued a rather meaningless apology for his comments about Sun-Times columnist Jay Mariotti ("What a piece of [deleted] he is, [deleted] fag.'') but refused to back down from his feud with Mariotti himself:

Guillen"If I hurt anybody with what I called him, I apologize, but I wasn't talking about those people. I was talking strictly about [Mariotti]. I will apologize to the people I offended because I should have used another word. Besides that, I'm still waiting for Jay. Jay's a piece of s---. If he wants to know, he should be talking to me here right now. If he were a man, he'd be here with you guys right now. Why he's so afraid to show up to the ballpark? When you're afraid to do something, you feel guilty about something, then tell him we'll pay his cab. Tell him to tell us where he lives, and we'll bring him to the ballpark and we'll have a conversation. But that's the way he is. He's garbage, still garbage, going to die as garbage. Period.''

Guillen and pitcher David Riske were both suspended today — not for the comments, but for Riske's intentional throw at St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Chris Duncan.
