Christian Singer Debby Boone Now Accepts Gay People: VIDEO

Boone

Singer Debby Boone (best known for her massive 70's hit "You Light Up My Life") told Traipsing Thru Films at this weekend's GLAAD awards that she has shed the anti-gay perspective she was taught being brought up in a Christian family (her father is actor-songwriter Pat Boone, who has compared gay to terrorists) and that it was getting to know real gay people which helped her do so.

Said Boone:

“I'm really happy to be here in support of GLAAD, because I am one of the people that has made the transition from an old way of thinking to a new one. And I think that's really the crux of what GLAAD is all about...I have really good friends and family members that have changed my mind. And the couple that we're with tonight is a lesbian couple who attended the church where my husband was associate rector.”

Pat Boone Launches Line of Meat Products to Benefit Anti-Gay Christian Conservative Groups Like 'Focus on the Family'

Patboone

Pat Boone is selling his meat, which is a scary enough headline.

He's getting into the celebrity-endorsed food business, launching a line of so-called "All-American" meats to benefit conservative Christian organizations and causes like Mercy Corps and Focus on the Family.

Boone, who we last covered after he recorded anti-gay robo-calls for Kentucky gubernatorial candidate Steve Beshear. Boone has also compared gay activists to terrorists, before insisting he loves gays.

Boone has recently been active in the Tea Party, so, perhaps Sarah Palin can do the butchering for him.

The Gayest Painting of Our Time?

Gayweddingcruise

In my online travels I ran across this kitschy take on Noah's Ark yesterday on Flickr and was momentarily stunned by the gayness of it all. 'Noah's Gay Wedding Cruise', which artist Paul Richmond created for a gallery show called “Sweet & Low: Optimism in a Pessimistic Age” at Gallery Arcane in San Francisco, features an iconic cast of characters — Ellen & Portia, Rosie and Kelli, Jack Twist and Ennis del Mar, Bert and Ernie, Elton John and David Furnish as well as penguins and assorted other homo fauna.

However, I was much more amused by the range of drowning sinners bobbing about in the flood: a sopped Ann Coulter, Larry Craig clinging to a toilet, Sally Kern, Fred Phelps, and Kenneth Starr. That's Pat Boone's guitar. A 'Yes on 8' supporter.

As art it's not really up my alley, but I could certainly appreciate the message.

Pat Boone: 'I Love Gays'

Patboone

Pat Boone defends the column he wrote last week in WingNutDaily comparing Prop 8 protestors to the terrorists in Mumbai, saying he loves gays, and has the stories to prove it.

****COLUMN EXCERPT***

Boone"I need to say right here, honestly and unashamedly – I love gays. I always have, always will. I have proved it, over and over. I met my first homosexual friend while I was in high school. He was a Navy veteran who had come back to finish his schooling. He put his hand on my thigh while we were parked at a fast food drive in. I was a cow milker with a vise-like grip, and after I nearly squeezed his wrist off, letting him know he had the wrong guy, he said, 'I guess you'll tell everybody, and I'll get kicked out of school.' I assured him I wouldn't, and I told nobody. I really felt empathy for him, because he obviously was not a happy man. I've been in the entertainment business for over 50 years now, and I've had many dear and close friends, guys (and some gals) I have loved who were practicing homosexuals. How could I not? We forged real friendships, never strained or awkward. We each knew the other's perspectives and respected them. Every one of them can tell you that I've never condemned or made them uncomfortable, in my home or theirs, though they knew I couldn't approve their sexual practices. So what? We were friends, and we could be honest with each other...

"Years ago, I sat by the bed of one of my closest friends as he lay dying in a VA hospital. AIDS didn't have a name yet, but that's what was killing him. His teeth had fallen out; he had no immune system left. We prayed together, and I saw him off to heaven. I loved Roger.

"Later (you may be surprised to learn), I really went out on a limb and wrote two books, about and with homosexual friends. The first was "Joy: A Homosexual's Fulfillment," and the second "Coming Out: True Stories of the Gay Exodus." They were written with a longtime lesbian, a former very promiscuous male homosexual and with a transsexual man who had emasculated himself in an effort to be a woman. They'd been down the whole road and back again, and they told me their stories and how they'd each been able to leave the homosexual lifestyle. This was not expedient for me as an entertainer, but I did it out of real love for gays. I do care.

"...I prayed with Rock Hudson and placed my hands on his bony chest, anointing him with oil, right at the end of his life. He couldn't speak because of the lesions in his throat, but the grateful glow in his eyes told me all I needed to know. There was love between us – and I saw him off to heaven, too. I know I'll see him there again.Me, homophobic? Ridiculous. I love my homosexual friends, but I detest these irresponsible street tactics that can and do lead to violence."

Pat Boone Compares Prop 8 Demonstrators to Mumbai Terrorists

When I last posted about Pat Boone, he was the voice of anti-gay robocalls in the Kentucky Governor's race in November 2007. Now, in a rant on the right wing's WingNutDaily, Pat Boone compares the peaceful demonstrations over the passage of Proposition 8 to the terrorist attacks in Mumbai, India. It's much longer than the excerpt below, but here's the gist of it:

Boone"Assuming you have become aware of all this, let me ask you: Have you not seen the awful similarity between what happened in Mumbai and what's happening right now in our cities? Oh, I know the homosexual 'rights' demonstrations haven't reached the same level of violence, but I'm referring to the anger, the vehemence, the total disregard for law and order and the supposed rights of their fellow citizens. I'm referring to the intolerance, the hate seething in the words, faces and actions of those who didn't get their way in a democratic election, and who proclaim loudly that they will get their way, no matter what the electorate wants! Hate is hate, no matter where it erupts. And hate, unbridled, will eventually and inevitably boil into violence. How crazily ironic that the homosexual activists and sympathizers cry for 'tolerance' and 'equal rights' and understanding –while they spew vitriol and threats and hate at those who disagree with them on moral and societal grounds."

Keith Olbermann gave Boone his "worst person" award for the rant. Watch it, AFTER THE JUMP...

Kentucky Voters Not Swayed By Gay-Baiting, Elect Steve Beshear

The ugly gay-baiting going on in the Kentucky gubernatorial Race between incumbent Republican Ernie Fletcher and Democrat Steve Beshear failed to sway voters in the state.

BeshearBeshear crushed Fletcher, winning nearly 60 percent of the vote.

The Courier-Journal reports: "The election was clearly a repudiation of Fletcher, who was seriously damaged by a scandal over his administration's hiring abuses in the state merit system. Fletcher refused to testify before a grand jury, was indicted on three misdemeanor counts -- later dismissed -- and pardoned those around him who had been charged."

In the end, the only place Fletcher felt he could find support, apparently, . Good riddance.
