Lady Gaga Loves Fur

6a00d8341c730253ef0177441b1395970d-250wiEarlier this summer, Andy began chronicling the growing animosity between PETA and Lady Gaga, after the songstress appeared in a b-movie promo poster dressed in what looked like a wolf carcass. At the time, PETA vice president Dan Matthews warned Gaga: "... you're making yourself a target just like the mindless Kim Kardashian." (Kardashian had recently been flour-bombed by a PETA activist.)

Gaga, it appears, doesn't much care: She was spotted and photographed wandering around Cologne this week wearing what looked like the carcass of an arctic fox.

Though I cannot find the post, ABCNews notes that Gaga has posted this message to her website:

I am choosing not to comment on whether or not the furs I purchase are faux fur-pile or real because I would think it hypercritical not to acknowledge the python, ostrich, cow hide, leather, lamb, alligator, 'Kermit' and not to mention meat, that I have already worn.

You see a carcass, I see a museum pièce de résistance.

Gaga proceeded to condemn PETA's "violent, abusive, and childish" brand of activism.

In 2009, Lady Gaga appeared on Ellen and described and condemned the wearing of fur:

Ellen DeGeneres quickly turned the conversation to fashion with Lady Gaga running down a list of her costume and hat designers ... One costume that has been dubbed the Kermit The Frog outfit was made by designer Jean de Castelbajac, and looks like a bunch of Kermit The Frog puppets glued together to make a top. Lady Gaga told Ellen DeGeneres, "I really loved that one in particular because I thought it was a commentary on not wearing fur, 'cause I hate fur and I don't wear fur.

Lady Gaga Fires Back at PETA Over Fur: 'Please Credit Hermes'

Yesterday I posted a letter from PETA VP Dan Mathews to Lady Gaga objecting to the fact that she wore fur on several recent occasions.

GagafurGaga fired back over Twitter late yesterday:

"For those press and such who are writing about whether or not my fur is actually real, please don't forget to credit the designer HERMES. Thank You! LOVE, gaga"

Mathew suggested in his letter that her response would determine whether she would be "targeted" like Kim Kardashian, who was flour-bombed at a red carpet event.

PETA VP Warns Lady Gaga She May Be 'Targeted' Like Kim Kardashian for Wearing Fur

EXCLUSIVE

Towleroad has obtained a letter sent today by gay PETA Senior VP Dan Mathews to Lady Gaga's rep at 42 West, Amanda Silverman. In the letter, Mathews asks Gaga about two recent photos of her wearing designer fur apparel, and a promotional poster for Robert Rodriguez' Machete Kills film in which she is draped in a wolf carcass.

GagaMathews warns Gaga that she should clarify her position on the fur industry or risk becoming a target like Kim Kardashian.

Mathews' letter:

Dear Gaga,

Many of your gay fans, I among them, have long admired what you told Ellen: "I hate fur, and I don't wear fur." I included a link because these recent photos of you in fox and rabbit and with a wolf carcass make it appear that you have amnesia. I'm also including this brief video hosted by Tim Gunn showing the violent cruelty that you promote when you wear fur. What happened? Are your stylists telling you that it's fake, or are you a turncoat? Many gays are animal advocates because we recognize that the same arrogance and indifference that some have toward animal suffering has at times been directed toward us personally because of our orientation. PETA has long participated in Pride events around the country, and just last week, we helped lead protests against Chick-fil-A. But by wearing those dumb furs in a heat wave, you're making yourself a target just like the mindless Kim Kardashian. As we plan our fall campaigns, please tell us whether what you gracefully told Ellen was heartfelt or just a pose.

We await your reply.

Sincerely,

Dan Mathews
Senior VP
PETA

Kardashian was flour-bombed by a PETA activist in March at a red carpet event.

Quinn Denounces Anti-Gay, Racist Carriage Incident; Drivers' Union to Undergo Anti-Discrimination Training

Earlier today, Towleroad posted video of a disturbing incident which took place over LGBT Pride in which a carriage horse driver hurled racist, sexist, homophobic slurs at a group of women leafleting nearby, along with a letter from Martina Navratilova condemning the incident and urging Speaker Christine Quinn to do so as well.

In the video, the driver is seen calling one woman a "f**king ni**er" and a "c*nt", and mocking the group of them for attending "the dyke convention".

NavratilovaNavratilova also used the opportunity as an animal rights activist and PETA spokesperson to urge the Speaker to change her position on the carriage industry as a whole and replace the horse-drawn carriages with cruelty-free eco-friendly cars.

Quinn responded to the incident and Navratilova's statement with a letter to the Teamsters Union and to Navratilova herself, both of which Towleroad obtained after reaching out to Quinn's office for a response to our original post.

Quinn's letter to the Teamsters Local 553 Union blasts the driver's behavior. The Union responded immediately, according to the NYT blog City Room, which picked up the story:

On Tuesday, Ms. Quinn said the union representing carriage drivers had agreed to immediately require its members to undergo anti-discrimination training. Ms. Quinn said her office would work with the union to find an appropriate gay-rights organization to help put the training in place.

QuinnSaid Quinn in the letter, which urged the training:

A video of one of your carriage horse drivers verbally assaulting a group of women during NYC’s LGBT Pride week was recently brought to my attention. The behavior depicted in this video is reprehensible and unacceptable from anyone, and is especially unbefitting of an industry the City Council has made sure treats its animals humanely...What happened to these women is truly outrageous and wrong and should not be tolerated.

Quinn also responded to Navratilova's criticism of the carriage horse industry, emphasizing practices which she says assure the safety and health of the carriage horses, but was not persuaded to change her position on their employment on New York City streets:

Given the tough economic times that we are in, we continue to believe that our current regulatory scheme, which does not permit the operation of electronic cars, strikes a fair balance between having stronger regulations in place to protect these horses while allowing an industry that generates vital jobs and tourism for our city to continue.
