Wedgie Nearly Ended Pete Doherty's Career

Petedoherty

Pete Doherty, who has just released a solo album (I posted the lead track with its male kiss recently), says "a burly Scotsman" nearly caused him to quit music after giving him a wedgie at a concert:

"The Babyshambles frontman was reduced to tears when he was grabbed in his nether regions as he stage dived during a gig... The singer admitted he was so put off by the unusual welcome, he fled the stage and took shelter in the tour bus until the gig finished. He said: 'I hid in the tour bus crying. The gig was going great, so I thought, 'I'll dive in,' and this big Scotsman just grabbed hold of my pants and said, 'Cop a load of this, Doherty.' Those were his exact words.' The embarrassed former Libertines star let it slip that he was too embarrassed to tell his bandmates the reason behind his escape from the stage and even told them he wanted to quit the group. 'When they found me on the bus I was crying my eyes out, going, 'The band's not working out. We should split up.' Nobody believed that was what was wrong, and eventually I snapped, 'All right, I got a wedgie, OK?''"

Extended Gay Kiss Caps New Video from Pete Doherty

The video for the new single from Pete, er, Peter Doherty's debut solo album Grace/Wastelands, called "Last of the English Roses" features Doherty scenes of Doherty playing football (and looking unusually ordinary) in a playground, and it's capped by a 30-second man-on-man kiss.

Doherty2 The in-an-out-of-detox former Libertines and current Babyshambles lead singer is known for his drug-related run-ins with the law, his relationship with model Kate Moss, and a side career in art in which many of the works are made with Doherty's own blood.

In 2004, Doherty appeared in a photo shoot by Andrew Kendall in which he swapped rocker spit with his friend and fellow musician Peter Wolfe.

In 2005, Doherty said in a biography by Pete Walsh that before he became famous in The Libertines he worked as a gay prostitute and drug dealer to make rent. Said Doherty: "I was working in a bar, selling drugs, working on a building site, writing poetry in the graveyard shift at The King's Head - and I was wanking off old queens for like £20. I remember once being taken back to this mews house in Chelsea, right old f**king badger he was. It was a bit daft actually. As he slept, I locked him in his room, tied a pair of trousers over his head and nicked all these American dollar bills out of his drawer. He's probably still there, with an erection, listening to CLASSIC FM radio."

road.jpg As California gears up for a gay wedding boom, nine gay rights groups issue statement urging those who get married in California not to rush back to their states and sue: "In an unusual six-page memorandum, written for same-sex couples, groups ranging from the American Civil Liberties Union to Lambda Legal warned that lawsuits would invite 'bad' court rulings that could take years to overturn." Two California countries have announced they'll halt all weddings, saying they lack resources.

road.jpg Jonathan Capehart warns of an Obama-Nunn ticket: "When Bill Clinton sought to keep his 1992 campaign promise to end the ban on gays and lesbians serving openly in the military, he met strong resistance in the Pentagon and on Capitol Hill. Nunn, one of the most adamant opponents, led a series of hearings that were stacked against ending the prohibition. Critics noted that Nunn held more hearings about and spent more time on gays in the military than he had on the defense budget or even the Navy's Tailhook sexual harassment scandal ... an Obama-Nunn ticket does not sit well with some prominent gay Democratic fundraisers."

Instead, Democrats have focused their efforts on bringing troops home from Iraq and other issues that have broad appeal among voters, such as lowering gas prices."

road.jpg Dallas man claims he was assaulted at Station 4 nightclub: "Sid Gonzales, 43, said he suffered two broken bones in his wrist, a puncture wound to his hand and multiple bruises on his backside when two men assaulted him at about 11 p.m. Gonzales said he was near the main dance floor of the Dallas gay nightclub when two men and a woman walked over and stood nearby. Gonzales said he was 'a little buzzed' from alcohol but not intoxicated. He said he tried to be friendly and make small talk with the trio. But he said he was not trying to hit on the men, whom he described as straight-looking, well-dressed and college-aged. When Gonzales asked a few questions, the woman responded but the men said nothing and looked uncomfortable, he said. Gonzales said he reached out to shake hands with one of the men. The man grabbed Gonzales’ arm, twisted it in the air and slammed it against a knee. Gonzales said the first man also stabbed him in the hand with an unidentified object, while the second began kicking him in the backside."
