90 Year Old Publicly Announces Her Support Of Her Gay Grandson - VIDEO

Chinese Grandma

While LGBT people are enjoying greater acceptance in China, many still face difficulty when coming out to their conservative and/or traditionally-minded parents. As a result, many were shocked to see a 90-year-old woman playing such a vital role in the creation of a video by PFLAG China

Upon viewing the actual video, though, the woman's comments don't prove to be all that revolutionary. Like many other grandmas the world over, all she wants is to see her grandchild meet someone nice and settle down:

"I am 90-years old. My grandson is gay. He is kind and mature. I hope he will find a boyfriend and live a happy life. And I hope our government supports him.”

PFLAG ChinaAccording to Queerty, the video's star is the grandmother of "an engineer in Fuzhou who goes by the alias Mutou". He said that, despite her message of love and acceptance, she "will have to deal with lots of pressure from strangers and relatives." Then again, senior citizens in general aren't exactly known for paying much mind to "pressure from strangers and relatives".

"Mutou came out to his parents last year, but it was his nonagenarian nana that was the most supportive and understanding. 'She even tried to calm my parents — who were less accepting in the beginning — and asked them to take it easy,' Mutou told the South China Morning Post. 'She did it out of simple love.'"

You're Having a Lesbian: VIDEO

Borngay

Any child can be born gay.

Watch, AFTER THE JUMP...

This video was commissioned by Shelley Argent, Australian National Spokesperson for PFLG. It's part of a new campaign down under:

The campaign's theme is that: "Any child can be born gay. So marriage equality is every family's issue."

Spokeswoman for PFLG Shelley Argent told News Limited the campaign was designed to build support for gay marriage on the grounds that gay children were "born that way".

"Being a lesbian or gay is not a choice," she said. "It's just the way you are."

PFLAG Founder Jeanne Manford Honored in Plaque on NYC Church Where Organization Was Born

PFLAG

PFLAG founder Jeanne Manford, who died in January at 92, and founded Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) in 1972, has been honored in a plaque that will be affixed later this year to the Greenwich Village church where the organization was born.

Pflag-ceremonySaid Andrew Berman, the Executive Director of the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation, at a ceremony at the Church of the Village (then Duane United Methodist Church) yesterday:

One of many great points of pride that I take in celebrating the history of Greenwich Village is the incredibly important role that it played in providing a safe, open, and nurturing environment for LGBT people, especially when too few such places existed.  It is no coincidence that Jeanne, and other brave and loving parents, found themselves in this church, in this community, forty years ago, seeking to change the fundamental way in which we saw our families and our society.

It is thus with great pride that I would like to unveil today the bronze historic plaque marker which will be placed on the exterior of this wonderful church to mark the beginning, forty years ago, of PFLAG, by Jeanne Manford.

Congressman Jerrold Nadler and City Councilmember Danny Dromm were among the elected officials who attended yesterday's unveiling.

PFLAG China Calls for Marriage Equality

PFLAG China has written to deputies of the National People's Congress urging them to legalize same-sex marriage, China Daily reports:

China"Some of our children have been living with their partners for nearly 10 years. They love each other. But they cannot sign their names legally when their partners need an operation," said the letter, which was written by PFLAG China (Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays of China) and represented more than 100 gay parents.

The organization said it will communicate with deputies from South China's Guangdong province who are able to promote the legalization of gay marriage during the NPC this year.

The letter underlines the problems that gay couples in China face, such as adoption, inheritance and purchasing properties. It calls for early amendment of the Marriage Law to include the right of marriage for gays.

Jeanne Manford, Late Founder of PFLAG, to Receive 2012 Presidential Citizens Medal

Jeanne Manford, the founder of PFLAG who died last month at the age of 92, will be awarded the 2012 Presidential Citizens Medal, the nation’s second-highest civilian honor, in a ceremony on February 15.

ManfordSaid President Obama in a press release: "It is my distinguished honor to award these individuals the 2012 Citizens Medal for their commitment to public service. Their selflessness and courage inspire us all to look for opportunities to better serve our communities and our country."

From the White House's brief:

Manford and her husband, Jules, co-founded in 1972 a support group for parents of gay children that grew into the national organization known as Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG).  Manford had always supported her son Morty, but was inspired to act after the police failed to intervene while Morty was beaten and hospitalized during a Gay Activists Alliance demonstration in April 1972. In the years that followed, Manford continued to march and organize, even after losing Morty to AIDS in 1992.  Today, PFLAG focuses on creating a network of support and advancing equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people.  Manford passed away in early January at the age of 92.

Additional recipients of this year's award can be found here.
