National Organization for Marriage (NOM) Launches $200K Smear Ad Blitz Against NH Governor John Lynch

Lynch

The National Organization for Marriage (NOM) has launched a $200,000 ad blitz in New Hampshire attempting to smear Governor John Lynch for his support of same-sex marriage with the pretense of going after his fiscal record. Here's the site they've set up.

Ray Buckley, chair of the New Hampshire Democratic Party, responded to the campaign in a press release:

"This is a right wing group out of New Jersey that is ignoring New Hampshire law, and spreading outrageous and deliberate lies in an effort to push a message of hate and discrimination. The truth is Governor Lynch has decreased spending, kept New Hampshire's state spending the fourth lowest in the nation, and kept its taxes among the lowest in the nation. Governor Lynch's record of fiscal discipline is far better than any of his Republican predecessors, who created the business enterprise taxes, numerous other taxes, and who increased state spending an average of nearly 15 percent a biennium."

Added Buckley: "Governor Lynch's strong management also stands in stark contrast to the dismal fiscal record of Republican candidate John Stephen...This out-of-state group is lying in a desperate attempt to distract voters from John Stephen's ethical transgressions and financial mismanagement because they know he believes in their agenda of hate and discrimination...Given his own history of ethical transgressions, it's no surprise that John Stephen is embracing an organization that is not even from New Hampshire, that is under ethics investigations in three states, and is preaching a message of hate and discrimination"

The National Organization for Marriage is currently under investigation by the Maine Commission on Governmental Ethics and Election Practices; the Iowa Ethics and Campaign Disclosure Board; and the California Fair Political Practices Commission.

Support and contributions for Lynch can be directed to his website.

NH Senate Judiciary Committee Recommends Killing Marriage Bill

Some not good news from New Hampshire:

"The committee voted 3-2 Thursday against a bill that passed the House last month. Committee Chairwoman Deborah Reynolds, a Democrat, said she doesn't think New Hampshire is ready for gay marriage. Republicans who voted against it said marriage is an institution created and defined by God as between one man and one woman."

NhGovernor John Lynch, who signed a civil marriage bill two years ago, has not said whether he would veto the marriage bill.

On April 15, the Senate Committee held public hearings on the bill, which passed the House 186-179 in late March. Earlier this week, New Hampshire GOP Chair John Sununu commented on the bill while reacting to the win in a special election of Republican Jeb Bradley.

The Union Leader reported: "[Sununu] said Bradley's election actually helps Democratic Gov. John Lynch. Bradley could be counted on to sustain a Lynch veto of the gay marriage and transgender discrimination legislation, 'if he (Lynch) finds the strength to veto that garbage,' Sununu said. [NH Dem Party Chair Ray] Buckley said it's 'silly talk' to suggest what bills Lynch will veto."

The Southern Voice reports that fundraiser Rufus Gifford, who with his partner Jeremy Bernard, raised millions for the Obama campaign, is expected to accept a role as the new finance director for the DNC. I shot the above photo of Gifford (left) and Bernard at the opening ceremonies of the Inauguration at the Lincoln Memorial.

The Voice's piece also notes that DNC Treasurer Andrew Tobias has been asked to stay on in his role by incoming Chairman Tim Kaine. Another high-profile gay figure in the DNC is New Hampshire Democratic Party Chair Ray Buckley. You may have seen our interview with him last week. Buckley was elected the new President of the Association of State Democratic Chairs.
