When Stone confronts Thula about the prostitution, there is an exchange of words and Stone suddenly kisses his friend, Thula. Both are left staring at each other in shock. 'Head in a Net' Trend Catching On
When I saw Terry Richardson's shots of Robert Downey Jr. in the most recent issue of GQ I thought back to the most recent cover of Numéro Homme I had seen, featuring model Sean O'Pry photographed by Greg Kadel, without the decorative loogie, of course.
It seems Terry Richardson saw it too, or this "head in a net" trend is catching on big time. Kind of like "Dick in a box" but with a fishnet stocking.
AFTER THE JUMP, one more glam shot of Downey Jr. showing off the new trend for summer (it breathes!).

News: Tori Spelling, Paw Paw, NYC Nightlife, ACT UP, Jason Mraz
New York may soon no longer be the city that never sleeps.

Jason Mraz on his new album and why he surrounds himself with gay people: "To me it’s not an issue of gay or straight; it’s just a coincidence that the people I hang out with happened to be … gay folk. And I, as a writer, have always written from a feminine side. I take yoga, and I practice my spirituality, to balance my heaven and earth, to balance my masculine and my feminine, you know? And I think what I find hanging out in the gay community, there’s more of a balance in the masculine and feminine qualities in the lifestyle than in a typical straight relationship or just in a straight person."
Tori Spelling anoints herself a gay icon: "I'm a huge fan of gays. They love me; I love them. They consider me kind of a gay icon, which they've labeled me as."
Justice Department confirms inquiry into whether U.S. Attorney Leslie Hagen was fired because she is a lesbian: "Assistant U.S. Attorney Leslie A. Hagen was informed in 2006 that her contract working on Indian affairs in the Justice Department's Executive Office for U.S. Attorneys would not be renewed for a second year — despite receiving the highest possible performance reviews. When NPR first reported Hagen's case earlier this month, Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT) and Sen. Arlen Specter (R-PA) asked the Inspector General's Office and the Office of Professional Responsibility to confirm that they were looking into Hagen's case."

Jay Blotcher recalls the lessons he learned on the front lines of ACT UP. He'll be appearing tomorrow at NYU with other ACT UP alums at NYU's Cantor Film Center: "This wasn’t some haphazard group—our media committee had members that were publicists at major firms. Michelangelo Signorile, my predecessor as media coordinator, applied showbiz-PR tactics to ACT UP and got us a lot of attention."

First Look: Tropic Thunder Trailer

At the beginning of the month I posted about Tropic Thunder, the forthcoming Ben Stiller movie-within-a-movie in which Robert Downey Jr. plays an actor who decides to color his skin black when he's assigned a role which was originally written to be played by a black man.
Downey, Jr. acknowledged the risk: "If it's done right, it could be the type of role you called Peter Sellers to do 35 years ago. If you don't do it right, we're going to hell. At the end of the day, it's always about how well you commit to the character. I dove in with both feet. If I didn't feel it was morally sound, or that it would be easily misinterpreted that I'm just C. Thomas Howell in [Soul Man], I would've stayed home."
The full trailer for the film has just been released. Watch it, AFTER THE JUMP (warning: autoplay)...

Robert Downey Jr. Plays Black Actor in Tropic Thunder

Yep, that's Robert Downey Jr. between Ben Stiller and Jack Black.
Entertainment Weekly explains the premise: "Robert Downey Jr. plays Kirk Lazarus, a very serious Oscar-winning actor cast in the most expensive Vietnam war epic ever filmed. Problem is, Lazarus's character, Sgt. Osiris, was originally written as black. So Lazarus decides to dye his skin and play Osiris, um, authentically."
Downey, Jr. acknowledged the risk: "If it's done right, it could be the type of role you called Peter Sellers to do 35 years ago. If you don't do it right, we're going to hell. At the end of the day, it's always about how well you commit to the character. I dove in with both feet. Jake Gyllenhaal Receives Young Artist Award

Although many of you may consider him the work of art rather than the artist.
Jake Gyllenhaal hobnobbed with future biopic subject and BFF Lance Armstrong and Zodiac co-star Robert Downey Jr. at an Americans for the Arts event where Jake was awarded the Young Artist Award for Artistic Excellence.
Jake was honored alongside Jeff Koons, Kitty Carlisle Hart, Aretha Franklin, and Sheila Johnson by the arts advocacy group at Cipriani in New York.
In somewhat related news, Brokeback director Ang Lee has joined the team creating the opening and closing ceremonies for the 2008 Beijing Olympics: "Interestingly, Chinese media reporting this appointment refer to Lee as the 'internationally renowned' director without referring to his nationality. China regards self-ruled Taiwan as part of "one China" and censors any reference that suggest its autonomy."
