Rod Blagojevich chooses to fill Illinois' vacant Senate post, amid word that the governor is set to name former Illinois Attorney General Roland Burris. The statement also is signed by U.S. Sen. Cooperroad.jpg Choire Sicha asks Anderson Cooper in the L.A. Times if he has any plans to offer 'opinionated' perspectives like some of his fellow anchors: "I have no plans to, no. I think those people are really good at what they do. Rachel Maddow is an incredible talent -- she's funny, and smart, obviously well researched on subjects. I'm just not interested as a viewer in listening to anchors' opinions. It seems like there's an awful lot of yelling, and this year yelling's been replaced by sarcasm and snark- iness."

road.jpg Push for domestic partner recognition NY Assemblyman Daniel O'Donnell interviews with David Paterson for Clinton Senate seat: " To say Mr. O’Donnell, known for his active support of gay rights issues, including same-sex marriage, was overly optimistic about his chances would be a stretch. He put his odds of getting the seat at about one in 10, or 'about the same as the population of gay people in the world.' But Mr. O’Donnell did offer that he believes the governor has yet to settle on a final choice."

He was as pleased to meet them as they were to meet him but they were gobsmacked when he said he'd love to do something with them music-wise.'"

Rod Blagojevich Autograph-Stalked the Fallen Richard Nixon

Everyone needs a role model. Time Out Chicago reports:

"Nixon, of course, had already been shamed and destroyed by the Watergate scandal, yet the young Blagojevich insisted he and his traveling buddy, who snapped the above photo (it briefly appeared in a WTTW profile about Blagojevich after he was elected), wait vigilantly for the former president. In 1980, most twentysomething men probably pined to bump into one of the Beatles or maybe Bo Derek; Blago wanted the autograph of our nation’s most notorious politician."

road.jpg NYT on Stonewall 2.0: "Outraged by California voters’ ban on same-sex marriage, a new wave of advocates, shaken out of a generational apathy, have pushed to the forefront of the gay rights movement, using freshly minted grass-roots groups and embracing not only new technologies but also old-school methods like sit-ins and sickouts." Kate Kendell of 'No on 8': "Even from my vantage point, I would have a wish list of things I would have done differently...It’s totally legitimate to say that the normal way of doing things did not get us to the finish line. And now some of those groups need to move over a couple of lanes to make room."

road.jpg Illinois civil union bill loses momentum as state in disarray: "First proposed in 2007 and running out of time before the current legislature expires, the bill would grant same-sex couples many of the rights given to opposite-sex married couples. There are two remaining legislative days on lawmakers' calendar in January—but its sponsor said it would take a back seat to the state's ongoing budget crisis. And it seemed still less likely to be called after FBI agents arrested Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich on federal corruption charges Tuesday, casting state leadership into disarray."

I thought it was a risk worth taking. I'm not sure there's a shark clause in my contract. I don't think the attorneys thought of that...They actually tell you to hold your breath when a shark comes toward you. But my heart was beating so fast I couldn't actually hold my breath. It's pretty clear for people that they should not try this at home. It's made very clear in the piece that this is something that the man has done hundreds of times before."
