British Men Banned from Becoming 'Queen' or 'Princess of Wales' in Advance of Marriage Equality Law

British laws are being redrafted in advance of the marriage equality law coming into effect, and among the items being rewritten are statutes regarding royal titles, the Telegraph reports:

HarryThe order makes clear that a clause in the Act giving gay and heterosexual marriage the same legal effect does not apply to the rights of anyone “who marries, or who is married to, the King Regnant, to the title of Queen”.

It also makes clear that were a future Prince of Wales to marry a man his husband could not be called Princess of Wales.

More immediately, the order rules out the possibility of Dukes, Earls and other male peers who marry other men making their husbands Duchess, Countess or Lady.

The paper adds:

Legal experts said it was a necessary “tidying up” exercise, but the Coalition for Marriage, which campaigned against same-sex marriage, said it showed the change had left the law in a “complete mess” and accused the Government of trying to “sneak” the changes through while political attention was on the floods.

Colin Hart, its director, said it was a “systematic drive to airbrush” words like husband, wife and widow from the law.

A draft order to be debated next week sets out amendments to 36 Acts dating back to 1859; special exclusions from the effects of the Same-Sex Marriage Act for a further 67 other pieces of legislation dating back 729 years and changes to dozens of pension regulations which have legal force.

Marriage equality is set to come into effect in England and Wales on March 13 with the first same-sex marriages to take place on March 29.

It's A Boy! The Duchess Of Cambridge Gives Birth To A Son: VIDEO

Easel2

The Duchess of Cambridge has given birth to a son weighing in at eight pounds six ounces. The birth of Queen Elizabeth II's first great-grandson was announced first via press release and then, as anticipated, on a proclamation set forth on a gilded easel in the courtyard of Buckingham Palace, the same easel first used to announce the birth of the baby's father, Prince William, in 1982. The New York Times reports:

“Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Cambridge was safely delivered of a son at 4:24 today,” the statement proclaimed, nearly five hours after the actual birth. “Her royal highness and the child are both doing well.”

Prince Charles, said he and his wife, Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, were "overjoyed" at the good news. A spokesman for the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh added that they were "delighted."

The Duchess and the young Prince of Cambridge are expected to stay in hospital overnight. We may not get our first glimpse of the new prince until tomorrow morning. Congratulations to the happy parents!

The Duchess Of Cambridge In Labor, Says Royal Family: VIDEO

HRH

Her royal highness The Duchess of Cambridge is reportedly in labor. After much anticipation and speculation as to the baby's gender, it appears the world will soon get to meet the Prince or Princess of Cambridge. The New York Times reports:

"A brief message on Twitter was the first of a series of carefully scripted disclosures set to culminate in the announcement of a birth that seems certain to draw unparalleled media coverage, even in the annals of Britain’s headline-making royal family.

“Her royal highness the Duchess of Cambridge has been admitted to St. Mary’s Hospital, Paddington, London, in the early stages of labour,” said a message from Clarence House, the official residence of the duchess and her husband, Prince William, the duke of Cambridge.

A spokesman for the couple, speaking in return for customary anonymity, said that the duke and duchess had traveled without a police escort. “Things are progressing as normal,” the spokesman said.

EASEL There has been no official word on whether the duke and duchess are expecting a boy or a girl, and information about the birth is expected to be closely restricted.

The formal announcement that a baby has been born will be made in a statement driven by car from the hospital across London and posted on an easel on the grounds of Buckingham Palace."

A recent change in the laws of succession guarantees that regardless of the baby's sex, once born, the Prince or Princess of Cambridge will be third in line to the throne after Prince Charles, The Prince of Wales, and the baby's father, Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge.

DIA little over thirty-one years ago, Princess Diana emerged from St. Mary's hospital with Prince Charles and baby Prince William of Wales in tow. William's brother, Prince Harry, was also born at St. Mary's.
