Macklemore and Ryan Lewis Join Seattle Indie Pop Group Fences to Sling Some 'Arrows': LISTEN

Fences

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis look set to give a big chart boost to Seattle indie pop group Fences with their new collaboration "Arrows", out this week. The "Same Love" songmakers lend their talents to the track which "is largely about letting go of control and searching for your identity" according to Billboard. That theme is part of the reason that Fences (aka Christopher Mansfield, asked Macklemore, an old friend, to join him on the track.

Said Macklemore to Billboard: "He's fu---d up in the same way that I'm f----d up. Because of that, our lives relate beyond the music. I've always admired his talent for illustrating with words and evoking imagery."

Macklemore Collaborator Ryan Lewis Reveals Mom is HIV+, Announces Healthcare Project - VIDEO

After receiving a blood transfusion in 1984, Julie Lewis — the mother of "Same Love" Macklemore collaborator, Ryan Lewis — contracted HIV (something Ryan had never discussed in interviews until now). She survived when doctors thought she wouldn't, and both Ryan and his sister Laura Irwin both were born without HIV, something they only had a 25 percent chance of doing.

Julie was able to live thanks in part to quality healthcare, and in her sake Ryan has decided to spearhead a global health initiative called The 30/30 Project. The goal is to set up 30 comprehensive health clinics in high-need areas such as Malawi — the place where 30/30 would first like to set up a clinic — and to have these clinics stay open for at least 30 years.

If successful, these clinics could help treat people without medical access living in areas most affected by HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and other life-threatening illnesses. At the time of press, the 30/30 IndieGoGo page has already raised $56,261 of its $100,000 goal.

34 Couples to Marry On-Air at the Grammys During Gay Rights Anthem 'Same Love'

Queen Latifah is set to officiate a mass gay wedding at tonight's Grammys, at a performance which will also include a special guest, the NYT reports:

Same_macklemoreBut the producers behind the program, which is to be broadcast live by CBS at 8 p.m., are hoping that the biggest show-stopper of the night will be a much more solemn event: an on-air wedding of 34 couples — gay, straight, old, young, of many races and many colors. The ceremony will be part of the hip-hop duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’s performance of their Grammy-nominated song “Same Love,” which became a marriage-equality anthem last year just as that issue was drawing intense national attention.

Mr. Lewis, the group’s producer, said that the weddings “will be in our minds the ultimate statement of equality, that all the couples are entitled to the same exact thing.”

The segment follows what the Grammy organizers said was the show’s long history of addressing timely social issues through music, like Elton John’s duet in 2001 with Eminem, who was then widely criticized as homophobic.

“We’re serious about this,” said Ken Ehrlich, the longtime producer of the Grammys.

The couples involved were forced to sign confidentiality agreements and not tell their families, according to the paper.
